QRCS Strengthens Cooperation with OCHA Somalia

Doha: HE Secretary-General of Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) Ambassador Ali bin Hassan Al Hammadi met today with Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia Adam Abdelmoula and his accompanying delegation to discuss the humanitarian situation in Somalia and means of promoting the cooperation to enhance the joint humanitarian work in the country.

During the meeting, the delegation gave an overview of the difficult living conditions in most of Somalia, where drought, flooding, and desertification displaced 2.9 million persons, now living at camps with hardly any basic services like education and health care. Almost half of the population, or 5.9 million persons, need humanitarian aid, 2.7 million need food, and 1 million children are at risk of famine and malnutrition.

Al Hammadi emphasized QRCSs keenness to improve the humanitarian conditions in Somalia, and Africa in general, capitalizing on its strong times with the Somali Red Crescent Society (SRCS). Together, they have already executed numerous humanitarian projects in many parts of the country.

For his part, Executive Director of Relief and International Development Division at QRCS Faisal Mohammed Al Emadi explained that QRCS is working on 18 projects in Somalia, with a total budget of over QR 19 million. These include health care, water and sanitation, food security, economic empowerment of the poor, agricultural production, and medical convoys.

The two sides agreed to arrange for a visit by QRCS Secretary-General to Somalia with the aims of strengthening the relations with SRCS, following up with QRCSs representation mission there, and setting the scene for resuming bilateral cooperation between QRCS and OCHA in Somalia and elsewhere.

الدوحة: اجتمع سعادة السفير علي بن حسن الحمادي الأمين العام للهلال الأحمر القطري اليوم مع السيد آدم عبد المولى نائب الممثل الخاص للأمين العام للأمم المتحدة والمنسق المقيم ومنسق الشؤون الإنسانية لدى الصومال والوفد المرافق له، بهدف مناقشة الوضع الإنساني في الصومال وسبل التعاون لتعزيز العمل الإنساني المشترك هناك.

وقدم الوفد ، خلال الاجتماع، نبذة عامة عن الظروف المعيشية الصعبة في معظم أرجاء الصومال، وما سببه الجفاف والفيضانات والتصحر من نزوح 2.9 مليون شخص، يعيشون في مخيمات تفتقر إلى أبسط الخدمات الأساسية مثل التعليم والصحة. وهناك 5.9 مليون شخص، أي ما يعادل نصف السكان، بحاجة إلى مساعدات إنسانية، منهم 2.7 مليون في حاجة ماسة إلى الغذاء، ومليون طفل يواجهون شبح المجاعة وسوء التغذية.

ومن جانبه، أكد الحمادي على اهتمام الهلال الأحمر القطري بتحسين الوضع الإنساني في الصومال، وأفريقيا بشكل عام، باعتباره أولوية للتغلب على التحديات الإنسانية والجغرافية، استثماراً للعلاقة القوية مع الهلال الأحمر الصومالي، حيث سبق للجانبين التعاون في تنفيذ العديد والعديد من المشاريع في مختلف الولايات الصومالية.

بدوره أشار السيد فيصل محمد العمادي المدير التنفيذي لقطاع الإغاثة والتنمية الدولية بالهلال الأحمر القطري ، إلى أن الهلال الأحمر القطري ينفذ خلال العام الجاري إجمالي 18 مشروعاً إنسانياً في الصومال، بميزانية إجمالية تتجاوز 19 مليون ريال، وهي تتنوع ما بين توفير الرعاية الصحية، وخدمات المياه والإصحاح، وتحقيق الأمن الغذائي، والتمكين الاقتصادي للأسر الفقيرة، ودعم النشاط الزراعي، وتسيير القوافل الطبية.

وفي ختام الاجتماع، اتفق الجانبان على الترتيب لزيارة مقبلة من المقرر أن يقوم بها الأمين العام للهلال الأحمر القطري إلى الصومال، من أجل تعزيز علاقات التعاون مع الهلال الأحمر الصومالي، ومتابعة أنشطة بعثته التمثيلية هناك، ووضع الأسس لتفعيل التعاون السابق مع مكتب الأوتشا في الصومال وعدد كبير من البلدان الأخرى.
