HMC Surgeons Perform 12 Life-Saving Kidney and Liver Transplant Surgeries Over a 10-day Period

Doha: Hamad Medical Corporations (HMC) transplant and organ donation teams performed 10 kidney transplants and two liver transplants over a 10-day period in June 2021.

Of the 10 kidney transplants, seven of the patients were Qataris and of these, three were recipients of donations from their relatives. The two liver transplants were from deceased donors.

Minister of Public Health HE Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari visited some of the patients who received the donor organs and lauded the teams involved in the life-saving procedures.

She stated that Qatars organ donation and transplantation programs are unique – we have a single, unified waiting list as well as exemplary care and ongoing support for donors and their families. Many countries around the world seek to emulate our model of care.

Qatars national strategy for organ donation and transplantation is not only world-leading in terms of the clinical and ethical standards it applies, but Qatar also has the depth of clinical expertise and facilities to perform these procedures and provide safe and effective follow-up care for transplant patients,” she added.

Medical director at Hamad General Hospital, and Director of Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation (QCOT) Dr. Yousuf Al Maslamani, said that since the start of our transplant program in 1986, we have worked tirelessly and strengthened the exceptional care we provide to our patients, adding that we have in place a multidisciplinary team with some leading international experts that enabled us to deliver the highest levels of care to our patients who need these procedures.

HMCs Chief Medical Officer Dr. Abdulla Al Ansari said the organ transplant program offers an excellent standard of care and positive outcomes.

“The increase of our transplant activities came as a result of the tremendous increase of living and deceased donation, and the growing trust of the community in the safety and world class outcomes of our transplant surgeries,” Dr. Al Ansari said.

“Even during COVID-19 pandemic we created a special track for these essential surgeries, to ensure the pandemic did not disrupt the opportunity for this group that are always foremost in our minds,” Dr. Al Ansari added.

In turn, Senior Consultant Transplant surgeon at HMC Professor Jonas Wadstrom, said that over the past five years the kidney transplant program at HMC has developed and made significant improvements.

“There has been a large increase in the number of transplants performed each year, with kidneys both from live and deceased donors,” he said, adding that parallel to that increase in numbers also the quality and the expertise has developed and improved significantly. In a coordinated multi-disciplinary approach patient with complex medical situations such as blood group incompatibility and in cooperation with Sidra, pediatric patients are being transplanted. Throughout this development and while performing more complex and advanced treatments, the results have been excellent and comparable to other world class centers.

الدوحة: أجرى فريق زراعة الأعضاء بمؤسسة حمد الطبية 10 عمليات لزراعة الكلى وعمليتين لزراعة الكبد، خلال عشرة أيام من شهر يونيو الجاري. وقد تم إجراء عمليات زراعة الكلى لعشرة مرضى منهم سبعة قطريين، تلقى ثلاثة منهم التبرع بالأعضاء من قبل أقربائهم، فيما تم إجراء عمليتي نقل وزراعة الكبد من قبل متبرعين متوفين .

وقامت سعادة الدكتورة حنان محمد الكواري وزير الصحة العامة بزيارة عدد من المرضى الذين تم إجراء عمليات الزراعة لهم، حيث أشادت بالفرق الطبية بمؤسسة حمد الطبية في تحقيق هذا الإنجاز وببرنامج قطر الخاص بنقل وزراعة الأعضاء الذي حقق ومازال يحقق نجاحا كبيرا في إنقاذ حياة المرضى.

وبينت سعادتها أن برامج قطر للتبرع وزراعة الأعضاء من البرامج الفريدة من نوعها، وقالت “لدينا قائمة انتظار موحدة إلى جانب توفير الرعاية المثالية والدعم المتواصل للمتبرعين وأسرهم”، مشيرة بهذا الخصوص الى أن هناك من الدول التي تسعى لمحاكاة النموذج القطري في برنامج زراعة الأعضاء.

وقالت سعادتها إن استراتيجية قطر الوطنية للتبرع ونقل وزراعة الأعضاء، لا تعتبر رائدة فيما يختص بالمعايير الإكلينيكية والأخلاقية التي تطبقها فحسب، ولكن تمتلك الدولة الخبرة الإكلينيكية والمرافق التي تؤهلها لإجراء تلك العمليات وتوفير متابعة آمنة وفعالة لرعاية مرضى نقل وزراعة الأعضاء .

من جانبه، أوضح الدكتور يوسف المسلماني، المدير الطبي لمستشفى حمد العام ومدير مركز قطر لزراعة الأعضاء أنه “منذ إطلاق برنامج نقل وزراعة الأعضاء عام 1986، نعمل بلا كلل أو ملل في تعزيز الرعاية الاستثنائية التي نقدمها لمرضانا، فنحن لدينا فريق متعدد التخصصات بقيادة عدد من الخبراء العالميين يبذلون قصارى جهدهم لتقديم أفضل مستوى من الرعاية لمرضانا الذين تطلبت حالاتهم الخضوع لمثل تلك الإجراءات”.

من جهته نوه الدكتور عبد الله الأنصاري، رئيس الإدارة الطبية بمؤسسة حمد الطبية بأن برنامج نقل وزراعة الأعضاء يوفر مستوى عالٍ من الرعاية وإعطاء نتائج إيجابية، وقال “إن نجاحنا وتميزنا في مجال نقل وزراعة الأعضاء يأتي نتيجة للزيادة الهائلة في التبرع بالأعضاء من المتبرعين الأحياء والمتبرعين بعد الوفاة والثقة المتزايدة في المجتمع نحو السلامة، والنتائج العالمية العالية التي يحققها جراحونا في مجال نقل وزراعة الأعضاء” .

وتابع “لقد قمنا أيضاً خلال جائحة فيروس كورونا (كوفيد-19) بإنشاء مسار خاص لهذه العمليات الجراحية المهمة، بهدف ضمان ألّا تتسبب هذه الجائحة في ضياع فرص مهمة على هذه الفئة من المرضى الذين نضعهم دائماً في محور اهتمامنا”.

بدوره قال البروفيسور جوناس وادستروم، استشاري أول جراحة نقل وزراعة الأعضاء بمؤسسة حمد الطبية إن برنامج نقل وزراعة الكلى بمؤسسة حمد الطبية حقق خلال الخمس سنوات الماضية، تطوراً وتحسناً مهماً. ” وأشار إلى أنه قد حدثت زيادة كبيرة في عدد حالات نقل وزراعة الكلى التي يتم إجراؤها سنوياً سواء من متبرعين أحياء أو أموات. وأكد أنه مواكبة لتلك الزيادة في عدد الحالات، تطورت الجودة والخبرة وتحسنت بصورة كبيرة.

وأوضح أنه في نهج منسق للفريق متعدد التخصصات، فإن المريض الذي يعاني من أوضاع طبية معقدة مثل عدم تطابق فئة الدم، وبالتنسيق مع سدرة للطب، تم إجراء عمليات نقل وزراعة الأعضاء للمرضى من الأطفال، لافتا إلى أنه من خلال ذلك التطور، في وقت يتم فيه إجراء المزيد من العلاجات المعقدة والمتقدمة، أصبحت النتائج التي يتم تحقيقها ممتازة مقارنة بما يتحقق في المراكز العالمية الأخرى المرموقة.
