Madrid: Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has said the 12 clubs who were part of the European Super League could not abandon it due to binding contracts, promising that the project would return after a period of reflection.
Perez was one of the leading figures in the breakaway competition, which was unveiled last Sunday only to fall apart within days when all six English clubs involved withdrew and others followed.
But Perez, whose club is one of the three teams along with Barcelona and Juventus yet to abandon the project, said it was not so simple for clubs to leave.
“I don’t need to explain what a binding contract is but effectively, the clubs cannot leave,” Perez told the Spanish newspaper AS on Saturday.
“Some of them, due to pressure, have said they’re leaving. But this project, or one very similar, will move forward and I hope very soon.”
The Super League was dealt another blow on Friday when JPMorgan, which had provided a 3.5bn euros ($4.2bn) grant to the founding clubs, said it had “misjudged how the deal would be viewed”.
Perez, however, said the bank was still on board.
“It’s not true they’ve withdrawn. They have taken some time for reflection, just like the 12 clubs. If we need to make changes we will but the Super League is the best project we’ve thought of,” he added.
“The partnership still exists as do the members who comprise the Super League. What we have done is taken a few weeks to reflect in light of the fury of certain people who don’t want to lose their privileges and have manipulated the project.”
Devised in secret among club bosses and financiers, the project has effectively imploded, however, after a ferocious backlash from fans, pundits and politicians.
Perez reiterated the need for the new competition to boost clubs struggling to cope with losses from the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that the 12 Super League clubs had lost a combined 650 million euros ($786m) last year and stood to lose up to 2.5 billion euros ($3bn) this year.
He was also not convinced by UEFA’s next reform of the Champions League, which will see the competition expanded to 36 teams from 2024.
“The Super League is the best possible project to help football come out of the crisis. Football is gravely hurt and we have to adapt to the era we live in,” he added.
“I think that the Champions League reform isn’t the best it can be, and what’s more we cannot wait until 2024.”
Meanwhile, Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo insisted his team did not fear UEFA sanctions over the failed Super League project.
“We are not afraid of this, we are calm and focused on our work,” Pirlo told a news conference ahead of the team’s Serie A game against Fiorentina on Sunday. “We are convinced that we can finish the season with our goals, we are serene about what UEFA will decide.”

ونقلت صحيفة إس الرياضية الإسبانية عن بيريز قوله السبت: “لا داعي لشرح معنى العقد الملزم، لكن لا يحق لهذه الأندية الانسحاب. بعض هذه الأندية وبسبب الضغوط، أعلنت انسحابها، لكن هذا المشروع، أو مشروع آخر مشابه جداً، سيمضي قدماً، وكُلّي أملٌ أن يحدث هذا قريباً جداً”.
وتلقى المشروع الجديد ضربة جديدة يوم الجمعة عندما أعلن بنك جي.بي مورجان الذي قدم 3.5 مليار يورو (4.2 مليار دولار) لتمويل المشروع عن أسفه لدعم الأندية التي أعلنت إطلاق الدوري، وقال ممثل للبنك: “بالتأكيد أخطأنا في الحكم على رد الفعل على الخطة”.
لكن بيريز يؤكد أن البنك مستمر في دعم الخطة، وقال بيريز أيضاً: “ليس صحيحاً أنه انسحب، بل تراجع لبعض الوقت للتفكير مثل الأندية الـ12. إذا تعين علينا إجراء تغييرات، فسنفعل، لكن دوري السوبر هو أفضل مشروع توصلنا إليه”.
وأضاف أن “الشراكة لا تزال مستمرة، وكذلك الأعضاء في دوري السوبر. الذي حدث هو الابتعاد لبضعة أسابيع للتفكير في ضوء الغضب الذي صدر عن بعض الناس الذين يريدون الحفاظ على مصالحهم”.
وأكد بيريز الحاجة إلى بطولة جديدة لمساعدة الأندية على تعويض خسائرها المالية بسبب تأثيرات جائحة كوفيد-19، قائلاً إن الأندية المؤسسة بلغت خسائرها الإجمالية في العام الماضي 650 مليون يورو، ويتوقع أن تصل خسائرها هذا العام إلى 2.5 مليار يورو.
وأشار بيريز إلى أنه غير مقتنع بخطة إصلاح دوري أبطال أوروبا التي يهدف الاتحاد الأوروبي للعبة (يويفا) من خلالها إلى توسيع البطولة لتشمل 36 فريقاً بداية من 2024.
وأوضح بيريز أن “دوري السوبر هو أفضل مشروع ممكن لمساعدة كرة القدم على الخروج من الأزمة. تضررت كرة القدم بصورة خطيرة، وعلينا التأقلم مع هذه الحقبة التي نمر بها. أعتقد أن إصلاح دوري الأبطال ليس الحل الأفضل، كما أنه لا يمكننا الانتظار حتى 2024”.
