Tokyo: Scientists have discovered a genetic therapy that can regrow teeth, providing hope for millions of people living with replacement teeth.
Scientists found that suppressing the USAG-1 gene with antibody therapy to allow teeth to grow back, and the antibody therapy targets this only gene, thus stimulating teeth growth.
In studies on mice and ferrets, it was observed that the missing teeth regained a full growth.
Researchers in Japan at Kyoto and Fukui Universities examined molecules known to be involved in teeth growth.
Some of these chemicals are also involved in regenerating other organs, so it is difficult to find the exact gene that targets only teeth.
