HMC Provides Integrated Care for Children with Down Syndrome

Doha: To mark the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD 2021), Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is raising awareness among the public to connect with individuals affected by Down syndrome to promote their optimal quality of life and protect their rights.

The theme for this years WDSD is “Connect” which signals the importance of connection between people with Down syndrome and the community in order to share ideas, experiences, and knowledge and to empower one another to advocate for equal rights for people with Down syndrome.

HMC also recognizes that people with Down syndrome have great potential and that they can lead normal healthy lives and enjoy a higher life expectancy. Although most are more likely to have certain medical conditions such as congenital heart defects, hearing and vision problems, and gastrointestinal issues, many of these conditions are now treatable.

“Individuals with Down syndrome can achieve optimal quality of life through parental care and support, medical guidance, and community-based support systems such as inclusive health and education at all levels. This facilitates their participation in mainstream society and the fulfillment of their personal potential. Adequate access to healthcare, to early intervention programs, are also vital to the growth and development of the individual, says Dr. Sona Tahtamouni, Developmental Pediatrician, at Child Development Center in Rumailah Hospital.

The Assistant Director of Pediatric Therapy Services Fatima Mustafa, says currently, around 75 children with Down syndrome and their families are receiving therapy through the Early Intervention Program at the Child Development Center in Rumailah Hospital. She says the children are receiving therapy sessions from highly qualified multi-disciplinary teams of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, special education experts and psychologists.

“Each year, the program receives between 40 to 50 new referrals of children with Down syndrome from HMCs maternity hospitals and from primary health centers. The children are provided with a comprehensive medical and developmental assessment by a developmental pediatrician followed by referral to the early intervention program or other therapy services. The early intervention program offers parent-to-parent counseling, family, and group therapy in addition to individual therapy sessions,” she says.

Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal abnormality typically associated with characteristic physical features, some health and developmental challenges, and some level of intellectual disability. The World Health Organization estimates that the incidence of Down syndrome is between 1 in 1,000 live births worldwide. Approximately 3,000 to 5,000 children worldwide are born with Down syndrome each year.

Every 21 March or 3-21 (a symbolic date), the Child Development Center and Therapy Services in Rumailah Hospital join the global community to raise public awareness to celebrate people with Down syndrome and those who live and work with them throughout the world. The date, 3-21 represents Trisomy 21, the medical term for Down syndrome, which is the third replication of the 21st chromosome.

This year’s campaign also features advice on oral health for children with Down syndrome, which aligns with the World Oral Health Day theme (marked annually on March 20) which is to be Proud of your mouth and protect your oral health. Part of the physiology of Down syndrome includes delayed appearance of teeth and other oral health challenges. Parents are advised to arrange a visit to the dentist in the first year of the childs life and learn about how best to help them take care of their future mouth health.

Highlights of this year’s awareness program at HMC include finding new ways to connect and integrate people with Down syndrome into the community as well as ensuring that their rights are protected. Educational and awareness leaflets, posters, and roll-ups about Down syndrome are on display at HMC hospitals’ lobbies to raise awareness of the condition among hospital visitors.

ويحتفل العالم هذا العام باليوم العالمي لمتلازمة داون تحت شعار “التواصل” والذي يشير بدوره إلى أهمية التواصل بين الأفراد المصابين بمتلازمة داون وأفراد المجتمع للقدرة على تبادل الأفكار، والخبرات، والمعرفة وتمكين بعضهم البعض لتأييد وتحقيق حقوق متساوية للأفراد من ذوي متلازمة داون.

وشددت مؤسسة حمد الطبية على أن الأشخاص المصابين بمتلازمة داون يتمتعون بقدرات كبيرة ويمكنهم العيش حياة صحية طبيعية كالآخرين وبمتوسط عمر أعلى، موضحة أنه على الرغم من أن معظم المصابين بمتلازمة داون أكثر عرضة للإصابة بحالات طبية معينة مثل عيوب القلب الخلقية، ومشاكل في السمع والرؤية، ومشاكل في الجهاز الهضمي فإن العديد من هذه الحالات والمشاكل يمكن علاجها في الوقت الحالي.

وقالت الدكتورة سونا تهتموني اختصاصي طب الأطفال النمائي بمركز تطوير الطفل في مستشفى الرميلة إنه يمكن للأفراد المصابين بمتلازمة داون تحقيق حياة أفضل من خلال رعاية الوالدين لهم وتقديم الدعم والتوجيه الطب، وأنظمة الدعم المجتمعية التي تشمل الصحة الشاملة والتعليم على جميع المستويات مما يسهل مشاركتهم في المجتمع وتطوير قدراتهم الشخصية.

وأضافت أن حصول الفرد على خدمات الرعاية الصحية الكافية وبرامج التدخل المبكر يعتبر أمرا حيويا لنمو الفرد وتطوره.

ومن جانبها، قالت السيدة فاطمة مصطفى مساعد مدير خدمات علاج الأطفال أن حوالي 75 طفلا مصابا بمتلازمة داون يتلقون جلسات العلاج من خلال برنامج التدخل المبكر بمركز تطوير الطفل في مستشفى الرميلة بمشاركة أسرهم حيث أنهم يتلقون الجلسات العلاجية من قبل فرق متعددة التخصصات ومؤهلة بشكل عالي وتضم أخصائيي العلاج الطبيعي، والعلاج الوظائفي، والنطق، وخبراء في مجال التربية الخاصة بالإضافة إلى أخصائيين نفسيين.

وأشارت الى إن البرنامج يتلقى يستقبل سنويا ما بين 40 إلى 50 إحالة جديدة للأطفال المصابين بمتلازمة داون من قبل مستشفيات الولادة ومراكز الرعاية الصحية الأولية. حيث يتم تقييم الأطفال تقييما طبيا ونمائيا شاملا من قبل طبيب أطفال متخصص في الطب النمائي متبوعا بالإحالة إلى برنامج التدخل المبكر أو خدمات العلاج الأخرى.

ويقدم برنامج التدخل المبكر جلسات تبادل المعلومات بين الآباء والأمهات، وكذلك العلاج الأسري والجماعي بالإضافة إلى جلسات العلاج الفردية.

يشار الى أن متلازمة داون هي حالة تنجم عن خلل في الكروموسات يعد هو الأكثر شيوعا ويصاحبها مجموعة من السمات البدنية المميزة، والتحديات على مستوى الصحة والتطور النمائي، ودرجة معينة من الإعاقة الذهنية.

وتشير تقارير منظمة الصحة العالمية إلى أن نسبة احتمال الإصابة بمتلازمة داون هي واحد لكل 1000 ولادة، حيث يولد في العالم سنويا ما بين 3000 إلى 5000 طفل مصاب بهذه المتلازمة.

ويشارك مركز تطوير الطفل والخدمات العلاجية بمستشفى الرميلة في 21 مارس من كل عام مع المجتمعات الدولية لرفع الوعي والاحتفال بالأفراد المصابين بمتلازمة داون والذين يعيشون ويعملون معهم في جميع أنحاء العالم حيث يشير تاريخ 21 مارس إلى التثلث الصبغي 21، وهو المصطلح الطبي لمتلازمة داون، والذي يعني التكرار الثالث للكروموسوم الحادي والعشرين.

وتتضمن حملة هذا العام أيضا تقديم نصائح حول صحة الفم لدى الأطفال المصابين بمتلازمة داون، تماشيا مع شعار “حافظ على صحة فمك لتفخر بها” الخاص باليوم العالمي لصحة الفم والذي يتم الاحتفال به في 20 مارس من كل عام حيث تمثل مشكلات صحة الفم وتأخر ظهور الأسنان جزءا من خصائص متلازمة داون، ولذلك ينصح آباء وأمهات الأطفال بترتيب زيارة لطبيب الأسنان في السنة الأولى من عمر الطفل للتعرف على كيفية مساعدة الطفل في الحفاظ على صحة فمه وأسنانه في المستقبل.

وتتمثل أبرز النقاط الجديدة في برنامج التوعية لهذا العام في مؤسسة حمد الطبية في إيجاد طرق جديدة للتواصل ودمج الأفراد ذوي متلازمة داون في المجتمع مع ضمان حماية حقوقهم، كما يتم عرض كل من المنشورات التثقيفية والتوعوية، والملصقات، واللوحات حول متلازمة داون في ردهات مستشفيات المؤسسة لرفع الوعي بهذه الحالة بين زوار المستشفيات.
