HMC: All Hepatitis C Virus Patients in Dialysis Units Have Recovered

Doha: Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Center and the Gastroenterology Department held a special ceremony honoring Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) in recognition of the support it had provided during the period of 2016-2020 to treat kidney patients with hepatitis C virus who were unable to afford their treatment.

Dr. Fadwa Al Ali, Director of the Treatment Program for Kidney Patients with Hepatitis C Virus, explained that the program was launched in 2016 in collaboration with the Gastroenterology Department at HMC and QRC to support residents who are unable to afford treatment costs. All 45 patients in the program have recovered from hepatitis C virus. The patients have been receiving dialysis at various dialysis units across HMC, including Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Center, Urgent Care Center, Al Shamal Dialysis Center, Al Shahaniya Dialysis Center, Al Wakra Dialysis Center, and Al Khor Dialysis Center.

Dr. Saad Al Kaabi, Head of Gastroenterology Department at HMC, said that this collaboration comes as part of the national campaign to eliminate hepatitis C virus in Qatar. The health authorities in the country, represented by the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) and HMC, adopted a national project aimed at controlling hepatitis in Qatar. Qatar Red Crescent is participating in the sponsorship of the program as part of its role to support the government’s humanitarian and social policy inside and outside Qatar. The project has received international recognition from several international organizations.

Hepatitis affects millions of people around the world. The condition can be self-limiting or can progress to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis, or liver cancer. Hepatitis viruses are the most common cause of hepatitis and the disease can develop more severe complications for kidney and renal failure patients.

Muna Al Sulaiti, Executive Director of Volunteering and Local Development Division at QRC, thanked HMC for organizing the recognition ceremony and said: “We at QRC are very proud to be part of the integrated health system that contributed to this great achievement as we share a common goal of eradicating the hepatitis C virus from Qatar.”

Al Sulaiti commended the fruitful cooperation between QRC and HMC as part of their strategic partnership and based on the objectives of the National Health Strategy under Qatar National Vision 2023.

“Our cooperation with HMC is not limited to covering treatment costs for those who are unable to afford their treatment, but it also extends to a number of other projects aimed at offering social and psychological support to patients, such as launching online libraries, visiting patients to offer emotional support, providing sports equipment, and organizing other events regularly in collaboration with HMC,” added Ms. Al Sulaiti.

Dr. Moutaz Derbala, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist at HMC, reiterated that Qatar is on the right pathway for controlling hepatitis, and this strategic framework is a continuation of an already developed national response plan for viral hepatitis, which is in line with global and regional strategies aimed at achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

الدوحة: أكدت الدكتورة فدوى العلي، مسؤول برنامج علاج مرضى الكلى المصابين بالتهاب الكبد الفيروسي /سي/ ، شفاء جميع الحالات المصابة بهذا النوع من الالتهاب وعددها /45/ حالة بمختلف وحدات الغسيل الكلوي التابعة لمؤسسة حمد الطبية، وهي مراكز فهد بن جاسم والرعاية العاجلة والشمال والشحانية والوكرة ومركز الخور للغسيل الكلوي.

جاء ذلك في كلمة للدكتورة العلي خلال الاحتفال الذي نظمه مركز فهد بن جاسم لغسيل الكلى وقسم الجهاز الهضمي بمؤسسة حمد الطبية، لتكريم الهلال الأحمر القطري نظراً لدعمه علاج مرضى الكلى غير القادرين من المصابين بالتهاب الكبد الوبائي /فيروس سي/ للفترة من 2016-2020 .

وأشارت إلى أن البرنامج تم إطلاقه عام 2016 بالتعاون مع قسم الجهاز الهضمي بمؤسسة حمد الطبية والهلال الأحمر القطري لدعم المرضى المقيمين غير القادرين على تحمل تكاليف العلاج.

بدوره قال الدكتور سعد الكعبي رئيس قسم الجهاز الهضمي بمؤسسة حمد الطبية، إن هذا التعاون يأتي في إطار الحملة الوطنية للقضاء على فيروس /سي/ بدولة قطر، مبينا أن الجهات الصحية في الدولة ممثلة في وزارة الصحة العامة ومؤسسة حمد الطبية تتبنى مشروعًا وطنياً يرمي إلى السيطرة على مرض التهاب الكبد الوبائي، ويشارك في رعاية المشروع الذي يحظى بتقدير دولي من قِبل منظمات ومؤسسات دولية ، الهلال الأحمر القطري في إطار دوره المساند للدولة في سياساتها الإنسانية والاجتماعية داخل قطر وخارجها.

ونوهت السيدة منى السليطي المدير التنفيذي لقطاع التطوع والتنمية المحلية بالهلال الأحمر القطري بهذا التكريم، وأن يكون الهلال الأحمر جزءًا من منظومة العمل الصحي المتكاملة التي ساهمت في تحقيق هذا الإنجاز بالوصول إلى الهدف الذي ينشده الجميع، والمتمثل في أن تصبح دولة قطر خالية من التهاب الكبد الوبائي /فيروس سي/.

وأضافت قائلة “لا يقتصر التعاون مع مؤسسة حمد الطبية على تغطية تكاليف العلاج للمرضى غير القادرين فحسب، بل يمتد ليشمل عدداً من مشاريع الدعم النفسي الاجتماعي للمرضى الذين يتلقون العلاج، مثل إنشاء المكتبات الإلكترونية والزيارات الخيرية وتوفير الأدوات والأجهزة الرياضية وغيرها من الفعاليات والأنشطة الدورية والموسمية التي تتم بالتنسيق والتعاون مع إدارة مؤسسة حمد”.

من جانبه أكد الدكتور معتز دربالة استشاري أول بقسم أمراض الجهاز الهضمي في مؤسسة حمد الطبية، أن دولة قطر تسير بشكل صحيح للسيطرة على مرض التهاب الكبد الفيروسي في إطار العمل الإستراتيجي لخطة الاستجابة الوطنية لمرض التهاب الكبد الوبائي بالدولة مع الإستراتيجيات الإقليمية والعالمية التي تهدف إلى تحقيق أجندة 2030 للتطور المستدام، وذلك بتعاون مختلف مؤسسات الدولة المعنية.

الجدير بالذكر أن مرض الالتهاب الكبدي يصيب ملايين الأشخاص حول العالم، وقد تكون الإصابة به محدودة ويتم شفاء المريض تلقائياً، إلا أنها قد تكون أكثر خطورة في حالات أخرى، وتتفاقم للإصابة بتليّف أو تشمّع الكبد أو سرطان الكبد، علما أن فيروسات الالتهاب الكبدي تعد المسبب الأكثر شيوعاً لحالات التهاب الكبد، وقد تزداد حدة المضاعفات لدى مرضى الكلى والفشل الكلوي.
