Recent Study: Covid-19 Will Just ‘Burn Itself Out’

Doha: A recent British study found that the new mutation on which novel coronavirus depends in its spreading process may cause it to eventually kill and terminate itself.

The study conducted by the British Francis Crick Institute, and published in the scientific journal “PNAS”, says that there are structural differences between the first virus that appeared in late 2019, and between the two strains that appeared in Britain and South Africa recently.

The researchers found that mutations in the viral spike protein structure affected how it attaches and infects cells, a part that helps spread the virus more widely.

The study concluded that new strains of the virus are more flexible and able to bind to the receptors of the human cell, which means that they may be more susceptible to antibodies, exposing the virus to kill and terminate itself.

“Because the mutated version binds more easily with cells, it has a spreading advantage, and this may be one of the reasons for the rapid spread that is taking place now,” said Donald Benton, the lead author of the study.

However, study co-lead author Anthony Roble said: “Over time, the virus will change its protein structure and develop a larger surface area, so it can infect, making it more susceptible to antibodies, which may be a defect in the virus that leads it to die automatically.”

الدوحة: توصلت دراسة بريطانية حديثة إلى أن الطفرة الجديدة التي يعتمد عليها فيروس كورونا المستجد في عملية الانتشار قد تتسبب في مقتله نهاية الأمر ونهايته في العالم.

وتقول الدراسة التي أجراها معهد “فرنسيس كيك” البريطاني، ونشرت في دورية “Pans” العلمية، إن ثمة اختلافات هيكلية بين الفيروس الأول الذي ظهر أواخر 2019، وبين السلالتين اللتين ظهرتا في بريطانيا وجنوب أفريقيا مؤخراً.

ووجد الباحثون أن التحوّرات في بنية بروتين “سبايك” الفيروسي أثرت على كيفية ارتباطه بالخلايا وإصابتها، وهو جزء يساعد على انتشار الفيروس بشكل أوسع.

وخلصت الدراسة إلى أن السلالات الجديدة من الفيروس أكثر مرونة وقدرة على الارتباط بمستقبل الخلايا البشرية، ما يعني أنه قد يكون أكثر عرضة للأجسام المضادة، مما يعرض الفيروس لأن يقتل نفسه وينتهي.

وقال دونالد بينتون، الباحث الرئيسي بالدراسة: “نظراً لأن النسخة المتحورة ترتبط بسهولة أكبر بالخلايا، فإنها تتمتع بميزة في الانتشار، وقد يكون هذا هو أحد أسباب سرعة الانتشار الحاصلة حالياً”.

ومع ذلك، يؤكد أنتوني روبل، المؤلف الرئيسي المشارك بالدراسة: “بمرور الوقت سيقوم الفيروس بتغيير بنية بروتينه وجعل مساحة سطحه كبيرة، حتى يستطيع العدوى، وهذا يجعله أكثر تعرضاً للأجسام المضادة، مما قد يكون عيباً حدث في الفيروس يؤدي إلى موته تلقائيا.
