More Than 500 Cardiac Surgical Procedures Performed Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

Doha: Heart Hospital, a member of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), safely performed 527 cardiac surgical procedures in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2012, surgical teams at the hospital have performed more than 3,000 procedures.

Chief Clinical Perfusionist and Mechanical Circulatory Support lead at the Heart Hospital Perfusion Service Abeer Al Jaja noted: “At HMCs Heart Hospital we have nine clinical perfusionists who play a significant role in controlling mechanical cardiac assist devices in patients with end-stage heart failure and in running extracorporeal circulation in patients requiring this support for other interventions, such as lung transplantation, organ perfusion or oncological treatments.

On the significant role of the perfusionists within the team, she explained: “The perfusionists are vital members of the cardiac surgical team due to the increased sophistication of technical interventions requiring assisted circulation. During the early development of perfusion technology, specialized life support equipment was developed and operated by physicians and scientists interested in extracorporeal circulation. Gradually, the operation and maintenance of these devices has been assigned to the Clinical Perfusionist, who provides direct patient care, accountable to the surgeon and physicians.”

الدوحة: أجرى مستشفى القلب التابع لمؤسسة حمد الطبية 527 عملية جراحية للقلب بنجاح خلال العام الماضي في ظل فيروس كورونا /كوفيد-19/، وذلك استمرارا للدور المهم الذي تقدمه الفرق الطبية بالمستشفى حيث تم إجراء ما يزيد عن 3000 عملية جراحية منذ عام 2012 حتى اليوم.

وأوضحت السيدة عبير الجاجة، رئيس تروية القلب الإكلينيكي وقائد الدعم الميكانيكي للدورة الدموية بخدمات تروية القلب بمستشفى القلب أن المستشفى لديه تسعة أخصائيين في تروية القلب الإكلينيكي، يقومون بدور هام في عملية التحكم في أجهزة المساعدة الميكانيكية للقلب عند المرضى الذين يعانون من مرحلة متأخرة من فشل القلب، وتشغيل الدورة الدموية خارج الجسم للمرضى الذين يتطلبون هذا النوع من الدعم أثناء إجراء التدخلات الأخرى مثل زراعة الرئة ونضح الأعضاء وعلاج الأورام.

وقالت إن هذا الفريق المتخصص يعتبر عنصرا رئيسيا في تشغيل أجهزة إنقاذ خلايا الدم التي تساعد في التقليل من نقل الدم والحد منه خلال العملية الجراحية. كما يقوم الفريق بتشغيل أجهزة نبض مضخة البالون داخل الشريان الأورطي التي تدعم الحالات الشديدة من مرض القلب سواء كان ذلك قبل العملية الجراحية أو خلالها أو بعد الجراحة، مؤكدة على الدور الهام لاختصاصيي تروية القلب ضمن الفريق بسبب زيادة تطور التدخلات التقنية التي تتطلب مساعدة للدورة الدموية.
