Mercury to be at nearest point from Sun on Sunday

Mercury, the smallest planet on our solar system will be at perihelion, the nearest point in its orbit around the sun, on Sunday, September 2, at 1:00 PM Doha local time, Qatar Calendar house announced.

The planet will be at 46 million kilometers approximately from the Sun’s center in contrast to 70 million kilometers it was on Friday, July 6, 2018, says Dr. Beshir Marzouk, astronomer at QCH.

Residents of Qatar and most of Arabian countries will have a good chance to observ Mercury over eastern horizon from “rise time of Mercury till sunrise time of each country.”

Moreover, the rise time of Mercury over Qatar sky on Sunday will be at 4:02 AM Doha local time, while the sunrise time will be at 5:15 Am, he said.

The best places to observ Mercury are places without light and environments pollutions. One can use astronomical telescope for a best view.

As is known, Mercury (and all planets) moves in its orbit around Sun on ellipse (elliptical) orbit, so that Mercury’s distance from the Sun’s center varies.

Mercury’s distance from the Sun’s center is 46 million kilometers at perihelion and 70 million kilometers at aphelion, the outermost point.

The the average distance between Mercury and Sun is 58 million kilometers approximately.

Dr Marzouk added that Mercury reaches to perihelion point every 88 days. It reached perihelion last time on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, while it will reach aphelion point again on November 29.

The astronomer said the varied distance of Mercury from the Sun means that its surface receives over twice as much energy from the Sun at perihelion as compared to aphelion.

Mercury is the nearest planet from the Sun in our solar system and it’s one of inner (solid) planets in our solar system.

أعلنت دار التقويم القطري أنه بمشيئة الله تعالى، سوف يصل أصغر كواكب مجموعتنا الشمسية «عطارد» إلى أقرب نقطة في مداره حول الشمس (نقطة الحضيض) الأحد المقبل، عند الساعة الواحدة ظهراً بتوقيت الدوحة المحلي، حيث سيكون عطارد على مسافة قدرها: 46 مليون كيلومتر من مركز الشمس تقريباً، وبفارق 24 مليون كيلومتر عما كان عليه يوم الجمعة 6 يوليو من العام الحالي؛ علماً بأن عطارد كان في أقرب نقطة من الشمس هذا اليوم، وكان على مسافة قدرها 70 مليون كيلومتر من مركز الشمس.

وذكر الدكتور بشير مرزوق (الخبير الفلكي بدار التقويم القطري) أن سكان دولة قطر سيتمكنون من رصد عطارد أعلى الأفق الشرقي من وقت شروق كوكب عطارد وحتى شروق شمس الأحد؛ علماً بأن كوكب عطارد سيشرق على سماء الدوحة الساعة الرابعة ودقيقتين فجر الأحد، بينما سيكون موعد شروق شمس الأحد عند الساعة الخامسة والربع صباحاً، بتوقيت الدوحة المحلي.

أما بالنسبة لمعظم سكان دول المنطقة العربية فسيتمكنون من رصد كوكب عطارد أعلى الأفق الشرقي من وقت شروق عطارد، وحتى موعد شروق شمس ذلك اليوم في كل دولة؛ علماً بأن أفضل الأماكن لرصد عطارد ذلك اليوم هي الأماكن البعيدة عن الملوثات الضوئية، والبيئية، ويُفضل استخدام التلسكوبات الفلكية لرصد الكوكب.

يُذكر أن كوكب عطارد كغيره من بقية كواكب مجموعتنا الشمسية، يدور حول الشمس في مدار إهليجي (قطع ناقص)، وتكون الشمس في إحدى بؤرتي هذا المدار؛ ولذلك فإن عطارد يكون في نقطة قريبة من الشمس تسمى: (نقطة الحضيض)، وفي نقطة أخرى بعيدة عن الشمس تسمى: (نقطة الأوج).;
