QF’s Equine Veterinary Medical Center to Oversee Local Animal Research

Doha: Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Equine Veterinary Medical Center is to begin overseeing the ethical component of animal research conducted by Sidra Medicine and Hamad Bin Khalifa University; research that is designed to help develop innovative medical treatments.
“Using animals in research is a privilege granted by society to the research community, and we are dedicated to upholding the highest standards,” said Head of Research and Education, Equine Veterinary Medical Center (EVMC), Dr. Tatiana Vinardell. “Animals are used in research because of their similarity to humans, and such studies aim to provide significant knowledge, or lead to improvement in the wellbeing, of humans and animals alike.”
The Institutional Animal Use and Care Committee (IACUC) at EVMC will be responsible for ensuring that all activities involving animals – ranging from camels and horses to zebrafish – in research at the QF entities are conducted with critical thought, judgment, and analysis.
Acting Chief Research Officer at Sidra Medicine Dr. Khalid Fakhro said: “Sidra Medicine is proud to continue working closely with Qatar Foundation’s research institutions. Our close collaboration with EVMC is based around ensuring that rigorous ethical and regulatory requirements are standardized for all animal research in Qatar.
“By establishing a reliance agreement with EVMC’s IACUC, studies conducted within Sidra Medicine’s Zebrafish research facility will lead to more precise diagnosis of diseases affecting our patients and guide personalized treatment options in the future.”
Dr. Richard O’Kennedy, Vice President for Research at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) and Vice President for Research, Development and Innovation at Qatar Foundation, said: “Qatar Foundation and HBKU takes the transparency of its initiatives and projects very seriously, particularly when it comes to the use of animals in research.
“Our faculty members and researchers must always work within national and international guidelines. To assist, we provide as much advice and support as possible to ensure that care and compassion continue to be hallmarks of all our research activities. We welcome the opportunity to work with the IACUC to develop and maintain the very highest standards and best practices.”
As part of EVMC’s dedication to promoting research to advance veterinary science, a number of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) students are currently completing externships at the EVMC. The Qatar Foundation partner university students have been involved in number of projects – including animal research – exploring areas such as genetics, neurology, and stem cell development, while receiving an insight into the application of precision medicine.

الدوحة: يبدأ المركز الطبي البيطري للخيل ،عضو مؤسسة قطر ، في الإشراف على أخلاقيات البحث العلمي للحيوانات المتّبعة في سدرة للطب وجامعة حمد بن خليفة ، وذلك للمساعدة في تطوير علاجات طبية حديثة.
وقالت الدكتورة تاتيانا فينارديل رئيسة قسم البحوث والتعليم في المركز الطبي البيطري للخيل، “إن استخدام الحيوانات في الأبحاث هو امتياز يُمنح لمجتمع الأبحاث ونحن ملتزمون بالتمسك بأعلى المعايير”.
و أوضحت ، ان استخدام الحيوانات في البحوث هي بسبب تشابهها مع البشر، مشيرة إلى ان هذه الدراسات تهدف إلى توفير المعرفة اللازمة للتطوير أو تؤدي إلى تحسين صحة البشر والحيوانات .
وستكون اللجنة المؤسسية لرعاية واستخدام الحيوان في المركز الطبي البيطري للخيل مسؤولة عن ضمان أن جميع الأنشطة البحثية المتعلقة باستخدام الحيوانات – من جمال وخيول وحتى أسماك الزرد – في كيانات مؤسسة قطر تجري من خلال التحليل والفحص العلمي والتشخيص الدقيق .
من جهته قال الدكتور خالد فخرو رئيس قسم البحوث بالوكالة في سدرة للطب، عضو مؤسسة قطر: “يفتخر سدرة للطب بمواصلة العمل بشكل وثيق مع المؤسسات البحثية في مؤسسة قطر. ويقوم تعاوننا الوثيق مع المركز الطبي البيطري للخيل على ضمان توحيد المتطلبات الأخلاقية والتنظيمية الصارمة لجميع الأبحاث الحيوانية في قطر”.
و أضاف “من خلال إنشاء اتفاقية الاعتماد مع اللجنة المؤسسية لرعاية واستخدام الحيوان في المركز الطبي البيطري للخيل ، فإن الدراسات التي تجري في منشأة أبحاث أسماك الزرد في مركز سدرة للطب ستؤدي إلى دقة في التشخيص للأمراض وتوجيه خيارات العلاج الأمثل لكل حالة في المستقبل”.
بدوره قال الدكتور ريتشارد اوكيندي نائب رئيس جامعة حمد بن خليفة للبحوث ونائب رئيس البحوث والتطوير والابتكار في مؤسسة قطر: “تأخذ جامعة حمد بن خليفة، عضو مؤسسة قطر، مبدأ الشفافية في مبادراتها ومشاريعها على محمل الجد وخاصةً عندما يتعلق الأمر باستخدام الحيوانات في الأبحاث”.
وأضاف: “يجب على أعضاء هيئة التدريس والباحثين لدينا العمل دائماً ضمن المبادئ التوجيهية الوطنية والدولية. نقدم أكبر قدر ممكن من المشورة والدعم لضمان أن الرعاية والرحمة لا تزال من السمات المميزة لجميع الأنشطة البحثية الخاصة بنا. ونرحب بفرصة العمل اللجنة المؤسسية لرعاية واستخدام الحيوان لتطوير والحفاظ على أعلى المعايير وأفضل الممارسات”.
وفي إطار سعي المركز الطبي البيطري للخيل إلى دعم وتعزيز الأبحاث للنهوض بالعلوم البيطرية، يقوم عدد من طلاب جامعة كارنيجي ميلون في قطر، إحدى الجامعات الشريكة لمؤسسة قطر، حالياً باستكمال خدمات خارجية في المركز الطبي البيطري للخيل.
وشارك طلاب الجامعات الشريكة في مؤسسة قطر في عدد من المشاريع – بما في ذلك البحوث الحيوانية – لاستكشاف مجالات مثل علم الوراثة وعلم الأعصاب، وتطوير الخلايا الجذعية مع تلقي نظرة ثاقبة حول تطبيق الطب الدقيق.
