HMC Launches Lung Transplantation Program

Doha: In a significant achievement for Qatar, Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Organ Transplant Program will soon start lung transplants.

The new milestone was announced at a special ceremony at HMC attended by HE Minister for Public Health Dr. Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari and other officials.

A lung transplant is a major procedure to replace a person’s diseased lungs with those from a donor. It is offered to people with lung failure when all other treatment options have failed.

Currently Qatar’s organ transplant program offers kidney, liver transplantation programs, and transplant surgeries making HMC one of the most comprehensive transplant centers in the region.

HE the Minister for Public Health said the new lung transplant program was a milestone for Qatar and will ensure patients in Qatar have access to this specialized level of care.

“Qatar’s organ donation and transplantation programs have fairness and equity at their heart and is something which we can be extremely proud of,” Dr. Al Kuwari said. “Qatar’s national strategy for organ donation and transplantation is not only world-leading in terms of the clinical and ethical standards it applies, but it is also one that is appropriate to the healthcare needs of our growing and diverse population.

“Being able to offer lung transplants here in Qatar is a true milestone for our highly specialized teams and means that our patients no longer have to travel overseas for these procedures and follow-up care”, she added.

The program will provide individualized treatment for patients in need of a transplant with a multidisciplinary team of transplant pulmonologists and surgeons, along with nurses, social workers, dietitians, rehabilitation staff and other specialists to provide comprehensive care and support. This includes Professor Takahiro Oto, an internally respected expert in lung transplantation who recently joined HMC as Lung Transplant Team Lead.

Chief Medical Officer of HMC Dr Abdulla Al Ansari said it was a great achievement for the organization and the teams involved to move into the next phase in the development of transplant services in Qatar.

“As an organization we have continued growing to meet the increasing and changing needs of our community and has been striving to fulfill its vision to provide the best quality care for all patients irrespective of nationality, religion or race. In November 2019 we set up a Heart and Lung Transplant Taskforce team who were charged with not only creating the environment in which the program would be a success, but also marshalling the planning, resources and technology needed to make this happen. Now, just one year later we are ready to launch lung transplants at Hamad General Hospital – a momentous achievement for HMC and for Qatar”, Dr. Al Ansari said.

Medical Director of Hamad General Hospital and Director of Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation Dr. Yousuf Al Maslamani said the launch of the program was the culmination of many years of hard work by the transplant teams.

“Since the start of our transplant program in 1986, we have worked tirelessly and strengthened the exceptional care we provide to our patients,” says Dr. Al Maslamani. “We have in place a multidisciplinary team with some leading international experts that will enable us to deliver the highest levels of care to our patients who need these procedures,” Dr. Al Maslamani said. “At HMC we also have the technology, facilities and access to the expertise to perform these surgeries and importantly have overwhelming community support for the organ donation program which is one of the keys to its success.”

Director of the Qatar Organ Donation Center at HMC and Chair of the Heart and Lung Taskforce Dr. Riadh Fadhil said there were currently more than 430,000 registered organ donors in Qatar.

“The wider organ donation and transplantation program continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of our community and has been striving to fulfill its vision to provide the best quality care for all patients, irrespective of nationality, religion, or race,” Dr. Fadhil said.

الدوحة: أعلنت مؤسسة حمد الطبية أنها ستبدأ قريبا في إجراء عمليات زراعة الرئة في إطار برنامج زراعة الأعضاء، وذلك في إنجاز جديد لدولة قطر في هذا المجال الطبي الهام.

وتم الإعلان عن ذلك في حفل خاص أقيم بمؤسسة حمد الطبية بحضور سعادة الدكتورة حنان محمد الكواري وزيرة الصحة العامة .

يشار إلى أن عملية زراعة الرئة هي إجراء جراحي يتم فيه استبدال الرئتين المصابتين لدى المريض برئتين من متبرع، وتجرى هذه العمليات الجراحية للأشخاص المصابين بالفشل الرئوي عند ثبوت عدم جدوى جميع الخيارات العلاجية الأخرى.

ويوفر برنامج زراعة الأعضاء في دولة قطر حاليا برنامجين لزراعة الكلى والكبد يتم من خلالهما إجراء عمليات زراعة الأعضاء في دولة قطر، وهو ما يجعل مؤسسة حمد الطبية واحدة من أكثر مراكز زراعة الأعضاء تكاملا على مستوى المنطقة.

وقالت سعادة وزيرة الصحة العامة إن إطلاق برنامج زراعة الرئة يمثل إنجازا مهما لدولة قطر ويضمن توفر هذا المستوى من الرعاية عالية التخصص للمرضى في قطر.

وأضافت أن برامج التبرع بالأعضاء وزراعة الأعضاء في دولة قطر تتميز بالتزامها الدائم بقيم العدالة والإنصاف، وهو أمر يدعو للفخر، في حين تعد استراتيجية قطر الوطنية للتبرع بالأعضاء وزراعة الأعضاء رائدة على مستوى العالم من حيث المعايير الطبية والأخلاقية التي تطبقها، كما أنها تتناسب أيضا مع احتياجات السكان من خدمات الرعاية الصحية في هذا المجال.

وأكدت سعادتها أن امتلاك القدرة على إجراء عمليات زراعة الرئة في قطر يمثل علامة فارقة حقيقية للفرق المتخصصة، ويعني أن المرضى لم يعودوا بحاجة إلى السفر للخارج لإجراء هذا النوع من العمليات أو المتابعة الطبية بعدها.

ومن المقرر أن يوفر البرنامج الجديد خدمات طبية وعلاجية للمرضى الذين يحتاجون لعمليات زراعة الأعضاء من خلال فريق متعدد التخصصات يضم أطباء متخصصين في زراعة الرئة والجراحة، وكوادر تمريضية، وأخصائيين اجتماعيين، واختصاصيي تغذية علاجية، واختصاصيي إعادة التأهيل، وكوادر متخصصة أخرى لضمان تقديم رعاية شاملة تلبي الاحتياجات الفردية لكل مريض، حيث يضم فريق زراعة الرئة البروفيسور تاكاهيرو أوتو وهو خبير دولي متخصص في عمليات زراعة الرئة التحق مؤخرا بالعمل في مؤسسة حمد الطبية كقائد لفريق زراعة الرئة.

بدوره أوضح الدكتور عبد الله الأنصاري رئيس الإدارة الطبية بمؤسسة حمد الطبية أن الانتقال للمرحلة التالية في مسيرة تطوير خدمات زراعة الأعضاء في دولة قطر يمثل إنجازا رائعا للمؤسسة ولجميع الفرق المشاركة في البرنامج.

وقال إن مؤسسة حمد الطبية تواصل نموها لمواكبة الاحتياجات المتزايدة والمتغيرة في المجتمع وتسعى جاهدة لتحقيق رؤيتها لتقديم أفضل رعاية ذات جودة عالية لكافة المرضى بغض النظر عن الجنسية أو الدين أو العرق، مشيرا الى أنه في نوفمبر من العام الماضي تم تأسيس فريق عمل زراعة القلب والرئة ولم تقتصر مهامه على إيجاد البيئة المناسبة لنجاح المشروع بل أيضا التخطيط وحشد الموارد والتقنيات اللازمة لتحقيقه والآن وبعد عام واحد فقط، فإن مؤسسة حمد على استعداد لإطلاق عمليات زراعة الرئة بمستشفى حمد العام وهو إنجاز مذهل للمؤسسة ودولة قطر.

ومن جانبه لفت الدكتور يوسف المسلماني المدير الطبي بمستشفى حمد العام ومدير مركز قطر لزراعة الأعضاء الى أن إطلاق هذا المشروع كان نتيجة سنوات من العمل الشاق الذي قامت به فرق زراعة الأعضاء.

وقال إنه منذ بداية برنامج زراعة الأعضاء بمؤسسة حمد الطبية في العام 1986، تم العمل بجد تام لتعزيز الرعاية الاستثنائية التي تقدم للمرضى، وتم بتجهيز الفرق المتعددة الاختصاصات التي تعمل إلى جانب بعض الخبراء والقادة الدوليين بهدف توفير أعلى مستويات الرعاية للمرضى الذين هم بحاجة لتلك العمليات.

وأكد أن مؤسسة حمد الطبية لديها التقنيات والمرافق والخبرات لإجراء هذه الجراحات ولديها كذلك الدعم المحلي الهائل لبرنامج التبرع بالأعضاء وهو الأهم لتحقيق النجاح.

من ناحيته أشار الدكتور رياض فاضل مدير مركز قطر للتبرع بالأعضاء بمؤسسة حمد الطبية ورئيس لجنة العمل لزراعة القلب والرئة إلى ان عدد المتبرعين المسجلين في برنامج التبرع بالأعضاء وصل الى 430 الف شخص مسجل.

وقال إن برنامج التبرع بالأعضاء وزراعة الأعضاء يواصل مسيرة التطور لتلبية الاحتياجات المتغيرة للمجتمع، ويسعى جاهدا لتحقيق رؤيته لتوفير أفضل رعاية ذات جودة عالية لكافة المرضى بغض النظر عن الجنسية أو الدين أو العرق.
