HMC’s Neonatal Intensive Care Achieves Best International Results

Doha: The Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have made remarkable progress in caring for premature babies and achieving the best possible results that have made the State of Qatar at the forefront of countries that have recorded the highest level of services and care to maintain the health of premature babies globally.

It is worth noting that about 50% of the total of 2,540 cases that were admitted to NICU’s Womens Wellness and Research Center (WWRC) in 2019 were babies born prematurely.

Medical Director of WWRC Dr. Hilal Al Rifai said, “HMCs Neonatal Intensive Care has made great progress in the management of premature babies and delivered the best possible outcomes which have put Qatar at the forefront of the world in achieving record top level survival. The NICU tertiary center, when in its previous home at Womens Hospital, won the Managing Directors award at the Star of Excellence awards in 2015 for its great advances in the care of premature babies and the establishment of the Tiny Baby Unit. This is in addition to the success of the ‘Golden Hour’ program which focuses on delivering the best expert multidisciplinary resuscitation and stabilization with outstanding great success in the management of premature babies.”

In an initiative led by HMC, the iconic Torch Hotel, Sheraton Grand Doha Resort and Al Wakra Hospitals main entrance were lit up in purple on Nov. 17, World Prematurity Day, to raise awareness of premature births and to show compassion and support for patients and families of babies born a little too soon. This years theme, “Together for babies born too soon caring for the future”, highlighted the significant impact of healthcare professionals, organizations and communities working together to improve the outcome for preterm babies and their families, meanwhile NICU staff from WWRC and Al Wakra Hospital organized events featuring staff donning purple shirts and masks as a symbol of the day which stands for sensitivity and exceptionality.

Pediatric Consultant, Critical Care at WWRCs NICU Dr. Nawal Magzoub mentioned that to ensure current and past mothers as well as the families of preemies receive well-rounded support and encouragement every step of the way, a support group of preemies parents called Sanadk, led by a small multidisciplinary committee comprising physicians, psychologists, social workers and lactation consultants, has been inaugurated in Qatar. Members of the group meet regularly to offer support to new mothers and share their experiences, she noted.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every year, an estimated 15 million babies (one in 10) are born preterm (before 37 completed weeks of gestation), and the number is rising.

WHO added that preterm birth occurs for a variety of reasons. Most preterm births happen spontaneously, but some are due to early induction of labor or caesarean birth, whether for medical or non-medical reasons. Common causes of preterm birth include multiple pregnancies, infections and chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure; however, often no cause is identified. There could also be a genetic influence.

الدوحة: حققت وحدات العناية المركزة للأطفال حديثي الولادة بمؤسسة حمد الطبية تقدما بارزا في رعاية الأطفال الخدج وتحقيق أفضل النتائج الممكنة التي جعلت دولة قطر في مقدمة الدول التي سجلت أعلى مستوى من الخدمات والرعاية للحفاظ على صحة الأطفال الخدج عالميا.

والجدير بالذكر أن حوالي 50% من إجمالي 2540 حالة تم إدخالها العام الماضي إلى وحدة العناية المركزة للأطفال حديثي الولادة بمركز صحة المرأة والأبحاث كانت حالات ولادة مبكرة.

وقال الدكتور هلال الرفاعي الرئيس التنفيذي بالوكالة والمدير الطبي لمركز صحة المرأة والأبحاث إن وحدة العناية المركزة للأطفال حديثي الولادة حققت تقدما كبيرا في رعاية الأطفال الخدج وإنشاء وحدة مخصصة للأطفال حديثي الولادة الذين يولدون صغيري الحجم بالإضافة إلى نجاح برنامج “الساعة الذهبية” الذي يركز على تقديم أفضل الخبرات من فرق متعددة التخصصات لإنقاذ حياة الأطفال الخدج وإيصال حالاتهم الصحية لأوضاع مستقرة وتحقيق نجاح كبير في إدارة حالات الأطفال الخدج.

واحتفلت مؤسسة حمد الطبية مؤخرا اليوم بالعالمي للولادة المبكرة بهدف رفع الوعي بالتأثيرات التي قد تتسبب بها الولادات المبكرة وتقديم الدعم والمساندة للمرضى وأسر الأطفال الخدج حيث اقيم الاحتفال تحت شعار “معا من أجل الأطفال الخدج … نرعى أجيال المستقبل” وتم تسليط الضوء على التأثير الكبير لتعاون خبراء الرعاية الصحية، والمؤسسات والمجتمعات معا لتعزيز النتائج المرتبطة بالأطفال الخدج وأسرهم في حين تمت إضاءة واجهات عدد من أبرز المباني في الدوحة باللون الأرجواني بينما قامت كوادر وحدة العناية المركزة للأطفال حديثي الولادة بمركز صحة المرأة والأبحاث بعرض ملصقات توعوية ومقاطع فيديو لأمهات الأطفال الخدج يتحدثن فيها عن رحلة أطفالهن في وحدة العناية المركزة للأطفال حديثي الولادة.

ومن جانبها أشارت الدكتورة نوال مجذوب استشاري طب الأطفال والرعاية الحرجة بوحدة العناية المركزة للأطفال حديثي الولادة بمركز صحة المرأة والأبحاث إلى أنه لضمان حصول الأمهات الحاليات والسابقات وكذلك أسر الأطفال الخدج على دعم شامل وتشجيع خلال كل خطوة من هذا الطريق، تم إنشاء مجموعة لدعم أباء وأمهات الأطفال الخدج يطلق عليها اسم “سندك”، بقيادة لجنة صغيرة تضم فرق متعددة التخصصات من الأطباء، والاختصاصيين النفسيين والاجتماعيين، واستشاريي الرضاعة الطبيعية في دولة قطر، حيث يلتقي أعضاء المجموعة بشكل منتظم لتقديم الدعم للأمهات الجدد وتبادل الخبرات.

ووفقا لمنظمة الصحة العالمية، يولد كل عام ما يقارب 15 مليون طفل (واحد من كل عشرة أطفال) قبل الأوان (قبل إتمام 37 أسبوعا من الحمل)، وهذا العدد في تزايد مستمر.

وتقول المنظمة العالمية أن الولادة المبكرة تحدث لعدة أسباب مختلفة، معظمها بشكل تلقائي، ولكن بعضها ناتج عن التحفيز المبكر للمخاض أو الولادة القيصيرية، سواء كان ذلك لأسباب طبية أو غير طبية في حين تشمل الأسباب الشائعة للولادة المبكرة الحمل أكثر من مرة، والإصابة بالعدوى أثناء الحمل، والأمراض المزمنة مثل السكري، وارتفاع ضغط الدم، كما يمكن أن تكون الولادة المبكرة ناتجة عن تأثير وراثي.
