MoPH Announced the Results of the Vision Screening Survey for School Students

Doha: Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) announced the results of the vision screening survey for school students (year 2019-2020). The survey detected that rates of abnormal visual acuity (visual acuity less than 6/6) among government and private school students, were 12.24 percent and 21.34 percent respectively.
Head of the Non-Communicable Disease Section at the MoPH Dr. Kholood Al-Mutawa explained that the survey was carried out by MoPH in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the Primary Health Care Corporation, and included around 100,000 students from 166 government schools and 140 private schools.
Dr. Shadi Al-Ashwal, an ophthalmologist at MoPH, said that the State of Qatar conducts this survey annually, indicating that school nurses should examine visual acuity and refer students who suffer from vision impairment to ophthalmologists at health centers, to be examined and managed accordingly.
It is worthy to note that 49 percent of the low vision causes are due to uncorrected refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Furthermore, children are more affected by this disease than others because their visual system is responsible for about 80 percent of what they learn. Therefore, improving vision contributes to improve their academic level and skills and prevents some complications such as lazy eye.

الدوحة: أظهرت نتائج المسح السنوي لفحص حدة الإبصار لدى طلبة المدارس، الذي أجرته وزارة الصحة العامة في العام الدراسي الماضي 2019-2020، أن حدة الإبصار لدى 12 في المئة من طلاب المدارس الحكومية و21 المئة من طلاب المدارس الخاصة أقل من المعدل الطبيعي للنظر (6/6).
وأوضحت الدكتورة خلود المطاوعة رئيس قسم الأمراض غير الانتقالية بوزارة الصحة العامة، أن المسح نفذته الوزارة بالتعاون مع وزارة التعليم والتعليم العالي ومؤسسة الرعاية الصحية الأولية، وشمل حوالي مئة ألف طالب وطالبة موزعين على 166 مدرسة حكومية إضافة إلى 140 مدرسة خاصة.
من جهته قال الدكتور شادي الاشول أخصائي العيون بوزارة الصحة العامة إن دولة قطر تجري هذا المسح سنويا، مشيرا إلى أن ممرضي المدارس يقومون بفحص حدة الإبصار وتحويل الطلاب الذين يعانون من ضعف النظر إلى أطباء العيون المختصين في المراكز الصحية، لكي يقوموا بدورهم بفحص الطلاب وتحديد نوعية العلاج.
الجدير بالذكر أن 49 في المئة من أسباب ضعف النظر تعود الى الأخطاء الانكسارية غير المصححة /عيوب الابصار/ كقصر النظر وطول النظر والاستجماتزم، حيث إن طلاب المدارس هم أكثر تأثرا بهذا المرض من غيرهم، بسبب أن قرابة 80 في المئة مما يتعلمونه يأتي من خلال الوسائل البصرية، ولهذا فإن تحسين النظر يسهم في تحسين مستواهم التعليمي ويمنع بعض المضاعفات مثل كسل العين.
وتحتفل وزارة الصحة العامة يوم غد الخميس باليوم العالمي للبصر 2020، تحت شعار “الأمل في البصر” وذلك بهدف تعزيز صحة العيون والتأكيد على أهمية التشخيص المبكر للأمراض التي قد تسبب العمى حتى يتم علاجها في الوقت المناسب.
