Jeddah: Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia on Monday cruised to a 3-0 win over Uzbekistan’s AGMK as Brazilian forward Romarinho scored twice in the Group C meeting in Jeddah.
Al Ittihad, the only club to win the back-to-back titles since the AFC Champions League was launched in 2002, are appearing in the Group Stage of the continental championship for the first time since 2015 and secured a statement win against Mirdjalol Qasimov’s side, the AFC website reported.
Two goals in four minutes early in the first half sent the 2004 and 2005 champions on their way to a well-deserved victory, with Haroune Camara and Romarinho on target to break AGMK’s resistance.
The Uzbeks had appeared calm and controlled in the initial exchanges but a misplaced pass by Dilshodbek Akhmadaliev deep inside his own half gifted possession to the home side in the 11th minute.
While Muhannad Al Shanqiti’s shot was well saved by Botirali Ergashev with his right foot, the rebound was smashed home by Camara to put Al Ittihad in front.
By the quarter of an hour mark the reigning Saudi Pro League champions had doubled their advantage, Camara this time seeing his attempt blocked only for Romarinho to gleefully stroke his shot home.
The visitors were under constant threat of conceding a third, Camara firing wide while Al Shanqiti was denied by the bravery of Ergashev, who dived at the Al Ittihad man’s feet as three home players bore down on goal.
Abderazzak Hamdallah hit the goalkeeper with his 24th minute attempt but a wild kick on the former El Jaish and Guangzhou R&F forward by Akhmadaliev saw referee Hiroyuki Kimura award a penalty that Romarinho smashed in with three minutes left in the half.
Ruben Sanchez provided AGMK with some attacking thrust in the second half as the Spanish forward fizzed a low left-foot shot across the face of goal 13 minutes after the interval to ensure Al Ittihad could not switch off.
But the Saudis continued to dominate, with Camara shooting wide in the 75th minute and Saleh Al Amri clipping the crossbar in injury time as Al Ittihad secured the victory despite former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema not being included in Espirito Santo’s squad.

وتصدر الاتحاد ترتيب المجموعة برصيد 3 نقاط من مباراة واحدة، مقابل نقطة لكل من القوة الجوية وسيباهان، في حين بقي رصيد /ايه جي ام كي/ خاليا من النقاط.
وستقام الجولة الثانية من منافسات المجموعة يوم الثاني من أكتوبر المقبل، حيث يلتقي “ايه جي ام كي” مع القوة الجوية، وسيباهان مع الاتحاد.
ومن جهة أخرى خسر الفيصلي الأردني أمام ضيفه ناساف الأوزبكي بهدف دون مقابل، اليوم، ضمن الجولة الأولى من منافسات المجموعة الثانية في دوري.
وسيطر التعادل السلبي على نتيجة المباراة حتى الدقيقة السابعة من الوقت بدل الضائع للشوط الثاني، عندما سجل ناساف هدف الفوز الثمين بواسطة لاعبه زافارمراد عبدالرحمتوف.
ويتأهل إلى دور الـ16 لمنطقة الغرب صاحب المركز الأول في كل مجموعة، إلى جانب أفضل ثلاثة أندية حاصلة على المركز الثاني في المجموعات الخمس.
