Qatar Creating Vision initiative helps 6.5 million children in treating eye diseases

The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) announced yesterday that over 6.5 million eye tests and treatments have been provided to children across India and Bangladesh through the Qatar Creating Vision initiative – a million more than the original target.

Qatar Creating Vision, funded by QFFD and led by international blindness prevention charity, Orbis, is an eye health initiative that works to reduce childhood blindness in India and Bangladesh, with the first phase of programmes due to finish this year. With this latest news, the initiative has stormed past all of its goals ahead of schedule, helping hundreds of thousands to see clearly again.

Through the establishment of a far-reaching school eye screening programme, Orbis and their partners have been able to find children struggling with their sight, thanks to QFFD’s support. Qatar Creating Vision projects have also focused on developing skills within communities to help drive people to eye care services. As a result, over 80,000 teachers, students, religious leaders and others have been trained on how to spot the first signs of vision loss since work began in 2016.

India and Bangladesh have some of the highest childhood blindness numbers in the world. Accessing treatment can be very expensive or may be too far away to reach. With 80 percent of a child’s learning processed through their vision, a lack of sight can mean a lack of education and missed opportunities. In 2018, thanks to QFFD, Orbis expanded Qatar Creating Vision to provide services to children and adults struggling with sight loss within the Rohingya and local host community in South East Bangladesh.

Demand for services has been extremely high. In the first three months of this year alone, of the 22,000 who were screened for eye conditions, almost half required some form of treatment including surgery, glasses or antibiotics.

Khalifa bin Jassim Al Kuwari, Director General of QFFD, said, “Despite the difficult circumstances we all face in this troubling time due to coronavirus, the Qatar Fund for Development continues to support humanitarian causes around the world both related to the outbreak and other areas of need.”

“We’re delighted that we have been able to support Qatar Creating Vision initiative reach even more people than originally planned and with a few more months of the initiative to go with our strategic implementing partner Orbis, even more can be achieved thanks to the charity’s hard work. Sometimes a simple pair of glasses or a short operation is all it takes to help a child get the most out of their education, or enable an adult to support their family. The Qatar Creating Vision initiative has provided opportunities for people to seek the treatment they deserve,” he added.

حقّقت مبادرة «قطر تصنع الرؤية»، التي أطلقتها دولة قطر عبر صندوق قطر للتنمية، رقماً جديداً في عدد الاختبارات وتقديم العلاج للأطفال في الهند وبنجلاديش؛ حيث تجاوز عدد الأطفال المستفيدين من المبادرة 6.5 مليون طفل، بواقع زيادة مليون طفل عن الهدف الأصلي. وبفضل هذه المبادرة، حصل الأطفال على المساعدة عن طريق فحوصات أمراض العيون وتقديم العلاج لهم، بجانب تدريب قادة المجتمعات المحلية. ومن المقرّر أن تختتم المرحلة الأولى من برامج هذه المبادرة بنهاية العام الحالي، وبذلك تكون مبادرة «قطر تصنع الرؤية» تجاوزت جميع أهدافها قبل موعدها المقرر، وهو ما ساعد مئات الآلاف على التمتع بالرؤية الواضحة مرة أخرى.

ويتولّى صندوق قطر للتنمية تمويل مبادرة «قطر تصنع الرؤية»، وتُشرف عليها مؤسسة «أوربس» الخيرية الدولية لمكافحة العمى، وهي مبادرة لصحة العيون تعمل على الحدّ من إصابة الأطفال بالعمى بدولتي الهند وبنجلاديش.

وقد تمكّنت مؤسسة «أوربس» وشركاؤها من الوصول إلى الأطفال الذين يعانون من مشاكل بالبصر، وذلك بفضل الدعم المقدّم من دولة قطر عبر صندوق قطر للتنمية، وعن طريق إطلاق برنامج مدرسي واسع النطاق لفحص أمراض العيون.

كما ركّزت مشروعات مبادرة «قطر تصنع الرؤية» على تطوير المهارات داخل المجتمعات المحلية لمساعدة الناس في الحصول على خدمات العناية بالعيون. وكنتيجة لذلك، حصل ما يربو على 80000 معلم وطالب وكبار رجال الدين، على التدريب بشأن كيفية التعرف على العلامات الأولى لمرض فقدان البصر، وذلك منذ بدء العمل على المبادرة في عام 2016.

وبهذه المناسبة، أكد السيد خليفة بن جاسم الكواري، المدير العام لصندوق قطر للتنمية، أنه على بالرغم من الظروف الصعبة التي يواجهها الجميع في ظل هذه الأوقات العصيبة جراء تفشّي فيروس كورونا، فإن الصندوق يحرص على المواصلة في تقديم دعمه للقضايا والحالات الإنسانية في جميع أرجاء العالم، منها ما يتعلّق بتفشي الفيروس وغيرها من جوانب الاحتياج.

وأضاف: «تغمرنا السعادة لتمكننا من دعم مبادرة (قطر تصنع الرؤية) للوصول إلى أكبر عدد من الناس عمّا كان مستهدفاً ومخططاً له في الأصل. وفي ظل استمرار التعاون مع شريكنا التنفيذي مؤسسة أوربس، سيصبح بمقدورنا تحقيق المزيد بفضل ما تبذله هذه المؤسسة الخيرية من جهود مضنية».

وتابع الكواري: «في بعض الأحيان، قد يكون كل ما في الأمر هو مجرّد الحاجة لنظارة طبية أو عملية بسيطة تجريها المؤسسة لمساعدة الأطفال في تحقيق أقصى استفادة من التعليم أو لتمكين البالغين من إعالة أسرهم.

وقد وفّرت مبادرة «قطر تصنع الرؤية» الفرصة لمن يرغبون في الحصول على العلاج الذي يستحقونه».

بدورها، علّقت السيدة ريبيكا كرونين، المدير التنفيذي لمؤسسة أوربس الخيرية بالمملكة المتحدة قائلة: «تفخر مؤسسة أوربس بشراكاتها مع صندوق قطر للتنمية؛ حيث إن حرص الصندوق على توفير التمويل اللازم لتقديم خدمات العناية بالعيون للمحتاجين قد ساعدنا في الوصول إلى ملايين الأطفال، وإيجاد من يعانون من أمراض فقدان البصر قبل ضياع فرصة الشفاء للأبد. كما أدّى إلى التوسع في نطاق خدماتنا بالمخيمات بجنوب شرق بنجلاديش إلى تقديم تلك الخدمات لأشد فئات السكان ضعفاً في المجتمع؛ إذ إن الكثير منهم لم يحصلوا على خدمات العناية بالعيون من قبل».
