Ministry starts electric bus testing on Qatar roads

Doha: The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) has started the pilot testing of electric buses in Qatar in collaboration with Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa), Mowasalat “Karwa” and China Harbor Engineering Co.

This comes within Ministry’s ongoing endeavors to provide eco-friendly and sustainable transport modes that help reduce carbon emissions from public transport.

MOTC will assess the pilot testing, which is planned to continue for several months, to ensure electric buses suit Qatar’s weather conditions, before deploying them.

The testing comes in line with the ‘Green Vehicle Initiative’ jointly and cooperatively coordinated and launched by the Ministry of Energy and Industry, MOTC and Kahramaa. That Initiative is wrapped into Kahramaa’s wider National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed).

“The Ministry places environment issues and energy efficiency at the top of its priorities and in all transport projects. It also supports all aspects of cooperation between government and non-government entities to reach to a clean environment and boost the culture of sustainable transportation,” it said in a statement.

Preparations for the electric buses pilot testing saw a great support from Kahramaa while Karwa carried out the actual testing operations.

The testing of the electric buses on Qatar streets, if proved successful, will support the diversification of the country’s public transport sector as it will provide vehicles that consume lesser energy and emit lesser carbon. It also promotes the use of more eco-friendly materials; something that helps strike the aspired-after economic and environmental balance in all transport infrastructure projects.

أطلقت وزارة المواصلات والاتصالات تجربة تشغيل الحافلات الكهربائية في دولة قطر بالتعاون مع المؤسسة العامة القطرية للكهرباء والماء “كهرماء”، وشركة مواصلات “كروة”، وشركة هاربور انجنيرنغ الصينية “China Harbor Engineering”.

وتأتي هذه الخطوة في إطار حرص الوزارة على توفير وسيلة نقل صديقة للبيئة ومستدامة تساعد في تقليل الانبعاثات الكربونية الصادرة من وسائل النقل العام، وستقوم الوزارة بتقييم هذه التجربة التي تستمر عدة أشهر للتأكد من أن الحافلات الكهربائية توائم الظروف المناخية لدولة قطر قبل البدء في تنفيذها.

كما تتماشى التجربة أيضاً مع “مبادرة المركبات الخضراء” التي تم إطلاقها بالتعاون والتنسيق المشترك بين كل من وزارة الطاقة والصناعة ووزارة المواصلات والاتصالات والمؤسسة العامة القطرية للكهرباء والماء “كهرماء”، والتي تعتبر أحد مشاريع البرنامج الوطني للترشيد وكفاءة الطاقة “ترشيد”.

وقد قدمت “كهرماء” دعمها القيّم في التحضيرات للتشغيل التجريبي للحافلات الكهربائية، بينما يتم تنفيذ العمليات التجريبية من قبل شركة “كروة”.

وستدعم هذه التجربة في حال نجاحها تنوّع قطاع النقل عن طريق استخدام حافلات تحد من استهلاك الطاقة التقليدية، وتسهم في خفض الانبعاثات الكربونية، وتشجِّع استخدام المواد الآمنة بيئيًا، لتحقيق التوازن الاقتصادي والبيئي في مشاريع البنية التحتية لقطاع المواصلات.

وتعمل وزارة المواصلات والاتصالات على توفير نظام نقل متكامل متعدد الوسائط على مستوى عالمي يقدم خدمات آمنة وموثوق بها بما يتماشى مع تحقيق ركائز رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030 التنمية الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والبيئية، بالإضافة إلى تطوير وسائل النقل وفق أحدث الأنظمة العالمية الصديقة للبيئة، وتوظيف الطاقة البديلة والنظيفة في مجال النقل والمواصلات على النحو الأمثل، للحد من الانبعاثات الضارة.

وتضع وزارة المواصلات والاتصالات المسائل البيئية وترشيد الطاقة في سلم أولوياتها بجميع مشاريع قطاع النقل للوصول إلى تحقيق رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030. فضلا عن دعمها لكافة أوجه التعاون والجهود المبذولة بين الجهات الحكومية وغير الحكومية للوصول إلى بيئة نظيفة وتعزيز ثقافة النقل المستدام في رفع كفاءة استخدام الطاقة البديلة والنظيفة.
