QPC flays Sudan military council’s decision to close Al Jazeera office

Doha: Qatar Press Center (QPC) condemned the decision of the Transitional Military Council in Sudan to withdraw the licence of Al Jazeera News Network office in Khartoum without giving any reasons related to the network’s violation of professional journalism.
In a statement, QPC stressed that the closure of Al Jazeera office is a setback for the gains of the Sudanese revolution and a breach of international conventions that protect the right to disseminate and receive information.
QPC stressed that Al Jazeera team in Khartoum works with integrity and impartiality despite the great obstacles that face it. QPC said the Military Council’s decision is against the will of the Sudanese people, who are demanding freedom and civilian rule.
It noted that the decision comes in the context of regional media and political incitement campaigns which seek to silence the people and prevent free media from covering the successive events in Sudan during this important period of the Sudanese people’s struggle for freedom.
The Center warned of the consequences of the suppression of the media and imposing a media blackout on the reality of what is happening on the ground.
Qatar Press Center stressed that the closure of the office of Al Jazeera network in Sudan is not a punishment for the network, but is the punishment of millions of Sudanese and Arabs in the region by denying them access to coverage of the developments in Sudan.
ندد المركز القطري للصحافة بقرار المجلس العسكري الانتقالي في السودان بسحب ترخيص مكتب شبكة الجزيرة الإخبارية بالخرطوم من دون إبداء أي أسباب تفيد بخرق الشبكة أو مكتبها لضوابط العمل الصحفي المهني.
وأكد المركز، في بيان أصدره أمس، أن إغلاق مكتب الجزيرة يمثل انتكاسة لمكتسبات الثورة السودانية واعتداء على كل المواثيق الدولية التي تحمي الحق في نشر المعلومات وتلقيها.
وشدد على أن فريق عمل الجزيرة بالخرطوم يعمل بكل نزاهة وحيادية رغم العراقيل الكبيرة التي تواجهه.
وأشار إلى أن قرار المجلس العسكري بإغلاق مكتب الجزيرة يمثل اعتداء على إرادة الشعب السوداني الذي يطالب بإطلاق الحريات والعودة للحكم المدني، لافتاً إلى أن القرار يأتي في ظل حملات تحريضية إعلامية وسياسية إقليمية تسعى إلى تكميم الأفواه ومنع وسائل الإعلام الحرة من تغطية الأحداث المتلاحقة في السودان خلال تلك الفترة الهامة للشعب السوداني ونضاله.
وحذر المركز من عواقب تكميم وملاحقة وسائل الإعلام وفرض تعتيم إعلامي على حقيقة ما يجري على الأرض.
وشدد على أن إغلاق مكتب شبكة الجزيرة في السودان ليس عقاباً للشبكة، بل هو عقاب لملايين السودانيين والعرب في المنطقة بحرمانهم من تغطية تنقل لهم معلومات عما يجري في السودان.
