Qatar, UNHCR join hands to open clinics for Syrian refugees

Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, have signed an agreement worth $3mn to operate five clinics to support primary health needs in support of the Syrian refugees in Jordan.
The agreement was signed by Misfer bin Hamad al-Shahwani, deputy director-general for Projects – QFFD; and Amin Awad, UNHCR director for the Middle East and North Africa Bureau and regional refugee co-ordinator for the Syria and Iraq situations, in support of UNHCR’s healthcare activities of Syrian refugees in Jordan for seven months.
This contribution aims to support UNHCR’s efforts in providing comprehensive healthcare services for an estimated 35,000 vulnerable Syrians refugees in Jordan, whether living in camps or urban settings. These services include reproductive health, mental health, dentistry, nutrition and referrals for further care, according to a press statement.
Al-Shahwani said: “This agreement complements the continuous solidarity of the State of Qatar with the Syrian people and those affected by the Syrian conflict. It also supports the efforts of the Jordanian government to support Syrians and to achieve Sustainable Development Goal number 3. The third objective of the Fund is to ‘ensure that everyone enjoys a healthy and prosperous lifestyle at all ages’.
“These clinics are equipped with basic services to ensure access to health care for Syrian refugees and provide treatment for acute and chronic diseases, as the Syrian people are in dire need for access to treatment to ensure a decent life.”
“Today’s agreement focuses on alleviating the suffering of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees in the sector of healthcare, in particular those who suffer from chronic medical conditions, the disabled and the elderly,” said Awad, commenting on the importance of this agreement. “We appreciate the efforts of QFFD and their commitment to saving lives and supporting those who struggle to find treatment, given their limited financial resources.”
During the past years, QFFD has supported UNHCR’s programmes in support of refugees and internally displaced persons. Last year alone, QFFD funded UNHCR’s programmes for up to of $9mn supporting some 560,000 refugees and internally displaced persons in Iraq, Bangladesh and Yemen.
وقّعت دولة قطر ممثلة بصندوق قطر للتنمية، والمفوضية السامية للأمم المتحدة لشؤون اللاجئين، اتفاقية مشتركة بقيمة 3 ملايين دولار، لتشغيل 5 عيادات لدعم الاحتياجات الصحية الأولية للاجئين السوريين في الأردن لمدة 7 أشهر.
وقّع على الاتفاقية عن صندوق قطر للتنمية السيد مسفر حمد الشهواني نائب المدير العام لمشاريع الصندوق، وعن المفوضية السيد أمين عوض مدير إدارة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا والمنسق الإقليمي لشؤون اللاجئين في سوريا والعراق بالمفوضية السامية للأمم المتحدة لشؤون اللاجئين.
وتهدف الاتفاقية إلى دعم جهود المفوضية في توفير خدمات الرعاية الصحية الشاملة لحوالي 35 ألف لاجئ سوري من الفئات الأكثر ضعفاً، سواء ممن يعيشون في المخيمات أو في المناطق الحضرية، وتشمل هذه الخدمات الصحة الإنجابية، والصحة العقلية، وطب الأسنان، والتغذية، وتحويلات الرعاية المكثفة.
وعقب التوقيع، قال السيد الشهواني: «تعبر هذه الاتفاقية عن تضامن دولة قطر المستمر مع الشعب السوري الشقيق ومع المتضررين من النزاع السوري، كما تدعم الجهود التي تبذلها الحكومة الأردنية لتقديم الدعم للأشقاء السوريين، بينما تدعم في ذات الوقت الهدف الثالث من أهداف التنمية المستدامة، حيث يعد الهدف الثالث من أوليات الصندوق، وهو المعني بـ «ضمان تمتع الجميع بأنماط عيش صحية وبالرفاهية في جميع الأعمار».
وأضاف الشهواني: «هذه العيادات مزودة بالخدمات الأساسية، وذلك لضمان وصول الرعاية الصحية المناسبة للاجئين السوريين، وتوفير العلاج للأمراض الحادة والمزمنة، حيث إن اللاجئين السوريين في أمس الحاجة للوصول للعلاج، لضمان حياة كريمة لهم».
وقال السيد أمين عوض إن الاتفاقية تركز على تخفيف معاناة أكثر اللاجئين السوريين ضعفاً في قطاع الرعاية الصحية، ولا سيما أولئك الذين يعانون من الأمراض المزمنة، وذوي الإعاقة والمسنين.
وأضاف: «إننا نقدر جهود دولة قطر والتزامها بدعم أولئك الذين يحتاجون العلاج، مع الأخذ بعين الاعتبار مواردهم المالية المحدودة».
