US Embassy’s National Day celebrates enduring American-Qatari partnership

Doha: The US Embassy in Doha hosted its National Day celebration on Tuesday evening, its biggest event of the year. US Chargé d’Affaires William Grant welcomed guests of honor H E Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti, Minister of Transport and Communications; and Ambassador Ibrahim Yousef Fakhroo. More than 1,000 Qatari officials, foreign dignitaries, American citizens, and leaders from business, academia, and civil society gathered to celebrate the United States’ independence.

Chargé‎ d’Affaires William Grant’s speech highlighted the strength of the US-Qatar partnership, and the values that propel the two countries forward, regardless of whatever challenges they may face – innovation, integrity, and an entrepreneurial mindset. “We enjoy working with Qatar because we see so many values we prize – tolerance of people with different religions and backgrounds, a constant drive to improve, and focus on the future. Both America and Qatar understand that through diversity and openness to others there is strength. There is progress. There is resilience.”

Grant noted that, after more than 45 years of friendship and partnership, the US Embassy continues to build bridges between Qataris and Americans across disciplines. More than 500 Qataris have visited the United States on its world-renowned International Visitor Leadership Program, including programs this year on disaster preparedness, women in civil society, and combatting money laundering and the financing of terrorism. The Embassy’s Discover America Week in late 2018 brought more than 150 US and Qatari companies together to promote trade, travel, the arts. Joint military exercises like the recent Invincible Sentry are helping enable a secure environment for World Cup 2022 and beyond.

Grant pointed to the success of the US-Qatar Strategic Dialogue in Doha in which covered trade and investment, education and culture, energy cooperation, labor rights, regional security and defense cooperation, and law enforcement and counterterrorism. During the Dialogue, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani signed agreements covering education, the first bilateral agreement in Cultural cooperation, and expansion and upgrades at Al-Udeid Air Base. The US is the largest source of imports to Qatar as well as one of the largest investors in Qatar’s energy sector.

Grant also noted “It has been an impressive year for Qatar,” referring to accomplishments like new labor reforms to protect the millions of foreigners who live and work here, opening the spectacular new National Museum of Qatar and the exciting victory by Al Anabi in the AFC Asian Cup.

استضافت السفارة الأميركية في الدوحة الحفل السنوي باليوم الوطني، وهو أكبر حدث لها خلال العام؛ حيث رحب القائم بالأعمال الأميركي ويليام جرانت بضيوف الشرف سعادة السيد جاسم بن سيف السليطي وزير المواصلات والاتصالات، وسعادة السيد عبدالله بن عبدالعزيز بن تركي السبيعي وزير البلدية والبيئة، وسعادة السفير السيد إبراهيم يوسف فخرو.

وشارك في الاحتفال أكثر من 1000 من المسؤولين القطريين، والشخصيات الأجنبية والمواطنين الأميركيين، ورجال الأعمال، والأوساط الأكاديمية والمجتمع المدني.

في كلمة له، تحدّث القائم بالأعمال ويليام جرانت عن متنانة الشراكة بين الولايات المتحدة وقطر، والقيم التي تدفع البلدين إلى الأمام بغضّ النظر عن التحديات التي قد يواجهانها لأجل تحقيق الابتكار والنزاهة والعقلية الريادية، قائلاً: «نحن مسرورون بالعمل مع قطر لأننا نرى الكثير من القيم التي نؤمن بها، مثل التسامح مع أشخاص من أديان وخلفيات مختلفة والرغبة المستمرة للتحسين، والتركيز على المستقبل. وتدرك كل من أميركا وقطر أن القوة والتقدم يبرزان من خلال التنوع والانفتاح على الآخرين».

وأضاف: «بعد أكثر من 45 عاماً من الصداقة والشراكة، تواصل السفارة الأميركية بناء الجسور بين القطريين والأميركيين عبر العديد من التخصصات»، مشيراً إلى أنه قد زار أكثر من 500 قطري الولايات المتحدة في برنامج القيادة الدولية المشهور عالمياً، بما في ذلك برامج هذا العام حول الاستعداد للكوارث، والمرأة في المجتمع المدني، ومكافحة غسل الأموال وتمويل الإرهاب. كما أقيم مهرجان «اكتشف أميركا» في قطر في أواخر عام 2018، بمشاركة أكثر من 150 شركة أميركية وقطرية لتشجيع التجارة والسفر والفنون. كذلك دشنّا تدريبات عسكرية مشتركة، من ضمنها تمرين «الحارس المنيع»، الذي يهدف إلى توفير بيئة آمنة لكأس العالم 2022 وما بعدها.

وأشار جرانت إلى «نجاح الحوار الاستراتيجي بين الولايات المتحدة وقطر في الدوحة، والذي غطى التجارة والاستثمار والتعليم والثقافة والتعاون في مجال الطاقة وحقوق العمال والتعاون الإقليمي في مجال الأمن والدفاع والقانون ومكافحة الإرهاب».

وأضاف: «خلال الحوار الاستراتيجي، وقّع وزير الخارجية الأميركي مايك بومبيو، وسعادة السيد محمد بن عبدالرحمن آل ثاني نائب رئيس مجلس الوزراء وزير الخارجية، اتفاقيات شملت التعليم، اتفاقاً ثنائياً في مجال التعاون الثقافي، وتوسيع وتحديث قاعدة العديد الجوية. تعتبر الولايات المتحدة أكبر مصدر للواردات إلى قطر، وكذلك واحدة من أكبر المستثمرين في قطاع الطاقة في قطر.

كما أشار جرانت إلى أن عام 2018 كان عاماً مثيراً للإعجاب بالنسبة لقطر، في إشارة إلى إنجازات مثل الإصلاحات العمالية الجديدة لحماية ملايين الأجانب الذين يعيشون ويعملون هنا، وفتح المتحف الوطني الجديد المذهل في قطر، والفوز بكأس آسيا.. ذلك الفوز المذهل الذي حققه العنابي.
