FM discusses strategic ties with US officials

Washington: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met separately yesterday during his visit to the US with US Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, and US National Security Advisor John Bolton.

The two meetings discussed strategic ties between the State of Qatar and the US, in addition to key regional and international issues.

H E Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani also met separately with Jared Kushner, Senior Advisor to the President of the United States; Personal Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt, Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the Department of State Nathan Sales, Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, and a number of congress members.

The meetings discussed the strategic bilateral relations and a number of regional and international issues, particularly peace in Afghanistan, Palestine, and joint efforts to combat terrorism and its financing.

H E the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs said that he looks forward to hosting US officials in Qatar throughout this year, and to being back to the US as well. He added that they were communicating to find resolutions to the region’s most urgent issues.

His Excellency stressed that the State of Qatar highly appreciates its ties with the US, and noted that the meetings were part of an ongoing dialogue in all fields of joint interest and that they provide an opportunity to exchange views on important international issues, including efforts to counter violent extremism.

The visit of H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to Washington follows the Second Qatar-US Strategic Dialogue that was held in Doha and saw the signing of three memorandums of understanding and a statement of intent to enhance cooperation on the politically, economic, and social levels.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed, during his participation at the ministerial meeting of the Global Coalition To Defeat ISIS that took place in Washington on Wednesday, that the State of Qatar is committed to contributing to the efforts made to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

H E also announced Doha’s intention to host a high-level regional meeting this year to address the horrible crimes committed by ISIS. It is worth noting that the strategic ties between the State of Qatar and the US began 45 years ago. The two countries share a joint goal of building a Middle-East that is more peaceful and more prosperous.

كما اجتمع سعادة الشيخ محمد بن عبدالرحمن آل ثاني مع سعادة السيد جاريد كوشنر كبير مستشاري البيت الأبيض، وسعادة السيد جيسون جرينبلات الممثل الخاص للمفاوضات الدولية، وسعادة السيد ناثان سيلز منسق مكافحة الإرهاب في وزارة الخارجية الأميركية، وسعادة السيد روبرت أوبراين المبعوث الرئاسي الخاص لشؤون الرهائن، وعدد من أعضاء الكونجرس، كل على حدة.

جرى خلال الاجتماعات بحث العلاقات الاستراتيجية بين البلدين، وعدد من القضايا الإقليمية والدولية، لا سيما مفاوضات السلام في أفغانستان، وفلسطين، والجهود المشتركة في مكافحة الإرهاب وتمويله. وقال سعادة نائب رئيس مجلس الوزراء وزير الخارجية: «أتطلع لاستضافة مسؤولين أميركيين في قطر طوال هذا العام، وكذلك للعودة إلى الولايات المتحدة الأميركية، ونحن نتواصل لإيجاد حلول لقضايا المنطقة الأكثر إلحاحًا».

وأكد أن دولة قطر تثمن بشكل كبير العلاقات القطرية الأميركية، مشيراً إلى أنها «جزء من حوار مستمر حول المجالات ذات الاهتمام المشترك»، مضيفاً أن هذه الاجتماعات «تتيح الفرصة لتبادل وجهات النظر حول القضايا العالمية المهمة، بما في ذلك مكافحة التطرف العنيف».

وتأتي زيارة سعادة الشيخ محمد بن عبدالرحمن آل ثاني إلى واشنطن بعد الحوار الاستراتيجي الثاني بين الولايات المتحدة ودولة قطر بالدوحة، الذي شهد التوقيع على 3 مذكرات تفاهم وبيان نوايا، لتعزيز التعاون على المستوى السياسي، والقضايا الاقتصادية والاجتماعية.

وكان سعادته، قد أكد خلال مشاركته في اجتماع وزراء التحالف الدولي لهزيمة داعش في واشنطن يوم الأربعاء الماضي، التزام دولة قطر بالمساهمة في الجهود المبذولة لهزيمة التنظيم في العراق وسوريا، كما أعلن نية الدوحة استضافة اجتماع إقليمي رفيع المستوى العام الحالي للتصدي للجرائم البشعة التي يرتكبها تنظيم الدولة.

يذكر أن العلاقات الاستراتيجية بين دولة قطر والولايات المتحدة بدأت منذ نحو 45 عاماً، ويتشاطر البلدان هدفاً مشتركاً لبناء شرق أوسط وعالم أكثر سلاماً وازدهاراً.;
