Kahramaa’s new initiative to reuse discarded tyres

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) represented by the National Program for the Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) has launched a new initiative to create a culture of reusing discarded tyres to avoid their burning in recycling process to cut the carbon emission.

Kahramaa targets to reduce carbon emission by seven percent until 2022. Under the initiative, the residents will be encouraged to reuse the waste tyres for decoration, plantation and sport activities to serve the purpose of Tarhseed.

Kahramaa organised a full-day event on Thursday at the Kahramaa Awareness Park (KAP) to create awareness among environmentally- friendly communities and stakeholders about the recycling of vehicle tyres, its mechanism, process, involved health hazard, environmental concerns among others.

The event with the theme ‘Old Tyres New Life’ was attended by the Kahramaa’s Tarsheed Department Manager Abdul Azeez Al Hammadi and Public Relations & Communication Manager Mohamed Ali Saleh Al Mohannadi. Over 700 children from government and private schools attended the event.

“The initiative aims at reusing the discarded tires as art works for decoration, planting flowers and vegetables and in sport activities,” Fatima Al Mesnad, Head of the Community Awareness and Development at Kahramaa told The Peninsula.

She said that large number of tyres are being used in Qatar in transport sector which is being recycled by burning causing carbon emission. However, she said, Tarsheed aims at reducing carbon. “We worked to create awareness among community,” said Al Mesnad. She added that the new initiative will help meet the target as the old tyres could be reused easily at homes as decoration piece, and planting flower plants and vegetables.
“A household can reuse four to eight waste tyres in said purpose to avoid recycling process of burning. The initiative targeted all segments of the society giving them at least three ideas to reuse the old tyres,” said Al Mesnad.

She said that the initiative was first event of Tarsheed this year and Tarsheed Carnival will be held on February 7, 2019.

The event comes as an initiative by Kahramaa to raise awareness about climate change and to reduce carbon emission by 7 percent until 2022. In order to achieve the objectives of the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), the participants were explained about the health and environmental hazards of burning tyres and encouraged on recycling aspects in the arena of art, agriculture and sport activities.

The recycling awareness event aimed at promoting a culture of sustainability to reduce carbon emissions and engaging the private sector in national initiatives, which in turn reflect efforts to achieve Qatar’s vision. More than 500 frames were presented by Q-Tyre as the official sponsor of the initiative, as well as of Aspire Zone Sports Activities. Interested participants were explained about the entyre process of tyres’ recycling and its ways and means to help Qatar achieve its environmental mission as envisaged in Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030.

The tyres that motorists drive on the road can be recycled in various forms. Apart from its, tyres may be shredded and burned for specific purpose or pulverised to bits to be used to fill in a playground or football field.

The importance of recycling tyres cannot be overemphasized as this is not only keeping the environment clean but also promoting good health by preventing the possible spread of diseases.

Kahramaa Awareness Park (KAP) is one of the destinations for all kind of such groups who have environment- related concerns as it offers the latest educational and awareness methodology by combining education and entertainment, which motivates the visitors to research, learn and to do practical implications. The presentations are designed using modern interactive techniques such as hologram technology and enhanced reality. أقامت المؤسسة العامة القطرية للكهرباء والماء «كهرماء»، متمثلة في البرنامج الوطني للترشيد وكفاءة الطاقة «ترشيد»، فعالية إعادة تدوير إطارات السيارات في الحديقة الخارجية لحديقة كهرماء للتوعية يوم الخميس الماضي، تحت شعار «إطارات قديمة، حياة جديدة»، بهدف توعية المجتمع بأهمية خفض الانبعاثات الكربونية الضارة، وأثرها على البيئة. وتأتي هذه الفعالية مبادرة من حديقة «كهرماء للتوعية» في أعقاب مؤتمر التغير المناخي في خفض الانبعاثات الكربونية بنسبة 7% بحلول عام 2022، وتحقيقاً لأهداف البرنامج الوطني للترشيد وكفاءة الطاقة «ترشيد» في الحفاظ على الإرث البيئي، من أجل الأجيال المقبلة، من خلال تعريف مختلف فئات المجتمع بأضرار حرق إطارات السيارات على المجتمع والبيئة، والسعي حول إعادة استخدامها في عدة مجالات، كالأعمال الفنية، والزراعة، والأنشطة الرياضية.

حضور مديري «كهرماء» و700 طالب

حضر الفعالية كل من المهندس عبد العزيز الحمادي مدير إدارة الترشيد وكفاءة الطاقة -كهرماء، والسيد محمد المهندي مدير إدارة العلاقات العامة والاتصال في «كهرماء»، وبحضور مجموعة من المهتمين والمختصين في هذا المجال. بالإضافة إلى حضور مميز لطلاب المدارس المستقلة والخاصة في الدولة، والذي بلغ عددهم 700 طالب. حيث تأتي هذه المشاركة في إطار حرص المؤسسة واهتمامها بالمجال البيئي لضمان تحقيق هدفها المؤسسي، المتمثل في زيادة التوعية الاجتماعية، والامتثال للمتطلبات البيئية.

الحديقة تقدم أحدث الأساليب التثقيفية والتوعوية

تعد حديقة «كهرماء للتوعية» من الوجهات الأولى لمختلف الفئات، نظراً لتقديمها أحدث الأساليب التثقيفية والتوعوية عن طريق المزج ما بين التعليم والترفيه، مما يزيد الحافز لدى الزائر للبحث والتعلم، حيث صممت العروض باستخدام تقنيات حديثة تفاعلية كتقنية الهولوجرام والواقع المعزز. كما تشمل زيارة الحديقة جولة في مرافقها المختلفة، بالإضافة إلى الورش المتنوعة، والمحاضرات التوعوية، والعروض المسرحية التوعوية.

نشر ثقافة الاستدامة

الجدير بالذكر أن هذه الفعالية تهدف إلى نشر ثقافة الاستدامة، من خلال خفض الانبعاثات الكربونية الضارة، وإشراك القطاع الخاص في المبادرات الوطنية، والتي تعكس بدورها تكاتف الجهود نحو تحقيق رؤية قطر. حيث تم تقديم أكثر من 500 إطار من قبل شركة «كيو تاير» كداعم رسمي للمبادرة، بالإضافة إلى رعاية مؤسسة «أسباير زون» للأنشطة الرياضية.;
