Cybersecurity competition winners honoured

DOHA: Minister of Transport and Communications H E Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti yesterday rewarded the winners of the top three positions at the “Qatar Threat Hunters 2018 Competition”. This came at a special event held at the office of the Minister in the presence of Eng. Khalid Al Hashmi, Asst. Undersecretary of Cyber Security at MOTC, and team members of the Qatar Computer Emergency Response Team (Q-CERT).

Jasem Al Sadi received the best “Attacker” award, Ahmed Aziz received the best “Defender” award while Muath Mushtaha won the best “Responder” award.

In remarks at the event, the Minister said; “I am proud to honour these talented young people in the field of cybersecurity. There is no doubt that without hard work, tenacity and learning more about information security they could not have reached this level of skill and won today’s awards.”

MOTC through Q-CERT, the Minister said, “places considerable attention on qualifying more national professionals in the field of cybersecurity. We aim to sharpen their skills, equip them with latest defence and security tools and technologies, and raise the capabilities of the new generations in terms of tracking, detecting and resolving all types of cyber threats and incidents.”

MOTC in mid-July 2018 invited all Qatari talents who have unique skills in the realm of cybersecurity to join the competition.

This national competition, “Qatar Threat Hunters 2018”, is a part of the Arab “Threat Hunter” competition that is organised by ITU-ARCC for the Arab youth to develop their skills and talents in the field. The aim is to qualify and prepare the next generation of cybersecurity professionals and specialists and harness their capabilities for competing regionally and globally.

As the cybersecurity skills gap continues to grow in both the private and public sectors, cybersecurity competitions have been recognised worldwide as an effective method for finding new cybersecurity talents and to foster the development of the required cybersecurity competencies.

The competition revolves around several questions and challenges on cybersecurity domains such as ethical hacking, system exploitation, ICT infrastructure and system protection, computer forensics and malware analysis.

The competition consisted of four phases. In the registration and pre-selection phase, interested participants were invited to join the competition until last August 7. In the second phase, the National Semi-Finals, which took place in mid-August, a webpage was dedicated for each participating Arab country on the competition’s main website for competitors from inside each country.

The third phase was the National Final Round, which took place in September. In that phase, Q-CERT hosted several qualified contestants, who competed at the Qatar national level. This resulted in the top three winners who were awarded today and who will compete regionally at the level of Arab countries at an event to be held later this month via the portal of the competition where participants from all Arab countries will compete on the first three awards.

Competition winners will be awarded during the Regional Cybersecurity Week 2018 for the Arab Region in Kuwait, October 21-25.

كرّم سعادة السيد جاسم بن سيف السليطي وزير المواصلات والاتصالات، الفائزين في مسابقة «قطر لصائدي الثغرات الأمنية 2018»، بعد أن شهدت تنافساً كبيراً من عدد من الشباب من الجنسين من أصحاب المواهب والمهارات في مجال أمن المعلومات. فقد كرّم سعاة الوزير كلاً من جاسم السعدي عن فئة «أفضل مهاجم»، وأحمد عزيز عن فئة «أفضل مدافع»، ومعاذ مشطاها عن فئة «أفضل مستجيب للحوادث الأمنية».

جاء ذلك في فعالية خاصة أُقيمت بمكتب سعادته أمس، بحضور السيد المهندس خالد الهاشمي وكيل الوزارة المساعد لقطاع الأمن السيبراني بالوزارة، وأعضاء الفريق القطري للاستجابة لطوارئ الحاسبات (كيوسيرت Q-CERT).

مواهب

وفي تعليق له بعد تكريمهم، قال سعادة الوزير: «سعدت اليوم بتكريم هذه المواهب والكفاءات الشابة في مجال الأمن المعلوماتي. ولا شك أن فوزهم بهذه الجوائز في فئات الهجوم والدفاع والاستجابة للحوادث الأمنية إنما جاء نتيجة مجهودهم الكبير في التزود بمثل هذه المهارات الفنية، والصبر والمثابرة على تعلّم مزيد منها».

وأكد أن الوزارة -ممثلة في «كيوسيرت»- تولي أهمية كبيرة لتأهيل مزيد من الكوادر الوطنية في مجال الأمن السيبراني، وتهدف من وراء ذلك إلى صقل المهارات، والتسلح بأحدث الوسائل الأمنية والدفاعية، ورفع قدرة الأجيال الجديدة من المشتغلين والمهتمين بمجال الأمن السيبراني على تعقّب واكتشاف ومعالجة مختلف أشكال الحوادث الأمنية، والاستجابة السريعة لها على أفضل صورة.

وتأتي هذه المسابقة الوطنية ضمن المسابقة العربية للأمن السيبراني «صائد الثغرات 2018»، التي يقيمها المركز العربي الإقليمي للأمن السيبراني للشباب العربي، بهدف تطوير المهارات والمواهب في الدول العربية في مجال الأمن السيبراني، لتهيئة الجيل القادم من المهتمين والمختصين بمجال الأمن السيبراني، وتعزيز قدراتهم للمنافسة على المستوى الإقليمي والعالمي، حيث اعتمدت العديد من دول العالم مسابقات الأمن السيبراني طريقة فعّالة للحد من تزايد الفجوة في المهارات المتعلقة بالأمن السيبراني، واكتشاف مواهب تعزز القدرات الأمنية السيبرانية.

تحدي

تتمحور المسابقة حول طرح عدة أسئلة وتحديات في 3 مجالات بالأمن السيبراني، هي القرصنة الأخلاقية واستغلال النظم، والبنى التحتية لتكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات وحماية النظم، وتحليل البرمجيات الخبيثة والأدلة الرقمية، بحيث يُختار فائز واحد لكل فئة من هذه المجالات.

وقد استضاف «كيوسيرت» المرحلة النهائية من المسابقة على المستوى الوطني، والتي أسفرت عن اختيار الفائزين بالثلاث فئات التي نالت التكريم يوم أمس، والتي من المقرر أن تنافس لاحقاً على مستوى الدول العربية في المرحلة الإقليمية من المسابقة، والتي ستُعقد خلال هذا الشهر عبر الموقع المخصص للمسابقة، حيث سيتنافس المشاركون من جميع الدول العربية للفوز بالثلاث جوائز الأولى للمسابقة، على أن يُكرّم الفائزون النهائيون في الأسبوع الإقليمي للأمن السيبراني، المزمع عقده في دولة الكويت خلال الفترة 21-25 أكتوبر.;
