Al Udeid Air Base reflects strong Qatar-US ties

DOHA: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs H E Dr. Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah said that Al Udeid Air Base reflects the close cooperation between Qatar and the United States and joint efforts to combat terrorism, where the Joint Air Operations Center (CAOC), acts as the nerve of US military air campaigns and allied forces in the region and beyond against terrorism.

H E Dr. Al Attiyah was speaking at the ceremony organised by the Qatari Armed Forces and the US Central Air Command to celebrate the handing over of the new Central Command of the US Air Force, led by Lieutenant General Joseph Gastella, to replace, Lieutenant General Jefferey Harrigian, the US Central Air Force based in the State of Qatar, QNA reported.

The ceremony was attended by Commander of the US Central Command General Joseph Votel; Chief of Staff of Qatar Armed Forces Major General Ghanim bin Shaheen Al Ghanim, a number of senior Qatari military officials, Air Force commanders and representatives of brotherly and friendly countries.

Dr Al Attiyah added: “As Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said during his meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington last April, highlighting the strong and solid military partnership between the two countries that lasted 45 years, which was characterised by continued cooperation to maintain the security and safety of the region and the largest region.
“Together we are stronger and we aim to continue our work with our strategic partners to support all efforts that seek lasting peace and prosperity. We are proud of the work we are doing together and will continue to seek to strengthen this partnership and push it to new heights,” H E Dr. Al Attiyah said.

Dr Al Attiyah referred to the first meeting of the strategic dialogue between Qatar and the US, which was held in January this year. “We agreed on a number of issues that serve the two countries in various fields and signed agreements reflecting our joint commitment to combating human trafficking and terrorism, and its funding in addition to launching an initiative to develop existing infrastructure at Al Udeid Air Base, where the plan was a result of Qatar’s permanent commitment to supporting the US ally and in line with our shared vision of a strong and continuous bilateral defence partnership between our two countries,” he said.

He also praised his recent visit to the United States, stressing that the production line of the F-15 aircraft, “Ababil”, which was launched during that visit, would enhance the combat capabilities of the Amiri Air Force through this aircraft, which is a strategic addition to the State of Qatar.
Dr Al Attiyah stressed on the importance of concerted efforts among the allies and the rejection of differences between partners to achieve the ultimate goal of the prosperity of our countries and achieve a just and comprehensive peace for the region and the world at large. General Joseph Votel, Commander of the US Central Command praised Qatar’s efforts to promote joint efforts between the two sides to meet the common challenges facing the region, stressing on the importance of the role of Al Udeid Air Base in support of anti-terrorism efforts.

“We are seeking to strengthen joint cooperation to achieve peace and stability in the region,” said Lt. Gen. Joseph Gastella, Commander of the US Central Air Force, stressing on the importance of enhancing mutual trust that will lead to success in realising the security and stability.q

احتفلت القوات المسلحة القطرية والقيادة الجوية المركزية الأميركية بتسليم مقاليد القيادة الجوية المركزية الأميركية الجديدة، بقيادة الفريق جوزيف غاستيلا، خلفاً للفريق جيفري هاريغان، حيث تتخذ القيادة الجوية المركزية الأميركية من دولة قطر مقراً لها. حضر مراسم التسليم -التي أُقيمت بقاعدة العديد الجوية- سعادة الدكتور خالد بن محمد العطية نائب رئيس مجلس الوزراء وزير الدولة لشؤون الدفاع، والفريق أول جوزيف فوتيل قائد القيادة المركزية الأميركية، وسعادة الفريق الركن طيار غانم بن شاهين الغانم رئيس أركان القوات المسلحة القطرية، وعدد من كبار المسؤولين والعسكريين القطريين، وقادة القوات الجوية ممثلي الدول الشقيقة والصديقة.

في كلمته خلال الحفل أكد سعادة الدكتور خالد بن محمد العطية نائب رئيس مجلس الوزراء وزير الدولة لشؤون الدفاع، أن قاعدة العديد الجوية تعد انعكاساً للتعاون الوثيق بين دولة قطر والولايات المتحدة الأميركية، وتجسيداً للجهود المشتركة لمكافحة الإرهاب، حيث يتواجد فيها مركز العمليات الجوية المشتركة (CAOC)، والذي يعمل كعصب للحملات الجوية العسكرية الأميركية والقوات الحليفة في المنطقة وخارجها ضد الإرهاب.

وتابع سعادته: «وكما أشار حضرة صاحب السمو الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني أمير البلاد المفدى «حفظه الله» خلال لقائه مع فخامة الرئيس دونالد ترمب في واشنطن في أبريل الماضي للشراكة العسكرية القوية والصلبة بين البلدين والممتدة منذ 45 عاماً، والتي تميزت بالتعاون المستمر للحفاظ على أمن وسلامة المنطقة والإقليم الأكبر».

وقال: «نحن معاً أقوى ونهدف إلى مواصلة عملنا مع شركائنا الاستراتيجيين لدعم جميع الجهود التي تسعى إلى تحقيق السلام الدائم والازدهار، كما أننا فخورون بالعمل الذي نقوم به معاً، وسنستمر في السعي لتعزيز هذه الشراكة ودفعها إلى آفاق جديدة».

ولفت سعادته إلى الاجتماع الأول للحوار الاستراتيجي بين دولة قطر والولايات المتحدة الأميركية الذي عقد في يناير من هذا العام، وقال: «اتفقنا فيه على العديد من القضايا التي تخدم البلدين في مختلف المجالات، كما وقعنا اتفاقيات تعكس التزامنا المشترك نحو مكافحة الاتجار بالبشر والإرهاب وتمويله، بالإضافة لإطلاق مبادرة لتطوير البنية التحتية القائمة في العُديد، حيث جاءت هذه الخطة نتيجة لالتزام قطر الدائم بدعم الحليف الأميركي، ولكونها تتماشى مع رؤيتنا المشتركة حول شراكة دفاعية ثنائية قوية ومستمرة بين بلدينا».

وأشاد سعادة الدكتور خالد بن محمد العطية نائب رئيس مجلس الوزراء وزير الدولة لشؤون الدفاع بالزيارة التي قام بها مؤخراً للولايات المتحدة الأميركية، مؤكداً أن خط الإنتاج لطائرات F-15 القطرية «أبابيل» والذي تم تدشينه خلال تلك الزيارة، سيعزز من القدرات القتالية للقوات الجوية الأميرية، من خلال هذه الطائرة التي تعتبر إضافة استراتيجية لدولة قطر.

وفي ختام كلمته، شدد سعادته على أهمية تضافر الجهود بين الحلفاء ونبذ الخلافات بين الشركاء لتحقيق الهدف الأسمى ألا وهو ازدهار دولنا، وتحقيق السلام العادل والشامل للمنطقة والعالم أجمع.

بدوره أشاد الفريق أول جوزيف فوتيل، قائد القيادة المركزية الأميركية بالتعاون القطري الأميركي، مثمناً جهود دولة قطر في تعزيز العمل المشترك بين الجانبين، والرامية لمواجهة التحديات المشتركة التي تواجهها المنطقة، مشدداً في الوقت نفسه على أهمية دور قاعدة العديد الجوية في دعم جهود مكافحة الإرهاب.

من جهته، قال الفريق جوزيف غاستيلا، قائد القيادة الجوية المركزية الأميركية: «نسعى إلى تعزيز التعاون المشترك بما يحقق السلام والاستقرار للمنطقة»، مشدداً على أهمية تعزيز الثقة المتبادلة التي ستؤدي إلى النجاح في تحقيق الأمن والاستقرار.;
