Apple set to buy Intel’s modem business for $1 billion

Apple is reportedly set to be spending close to $1 billion to acquire Intel’s modem business. As per a report by The Wall Street Journal, the deal between Apple and Intel could be finalised by next week.

There has been a lot of upheaval for Intel when it comes to its 5G modem business. When Qualcomm and Apple settled their long-standing dispute earlier this year, Intel immediately announced its exit from the 5G modem business. Since then speculation has been rife about Apple being interested in buying Intel’s model business. Earlier in April it was reported that Intel was set to auction as many 8,500 patents. Then another report confirmed that Intel had found a buyer for those patents.

According to a report by IAM Media, Intel in late June put 8,500 of its patents for auction. Intel apparently received strong interest but “the exclusivity that the company had entered into with one party” doesn’t allow other bidders to engage into the auction. Apple may very well have been the mystery buyer. Apple and Intel have a long-standing relationship as the latter used to provide modems to iPhones till very recently.

The other reason why Apple could be the buyer is the sheer size of the portfolio of ‘assets’ that Intel is auctioning off. There are 6,000 patents related to 3G, 4G and 5G cellular standards, as per IAM Media. Further there are 1,700 patents that are related to wireless implementation technologies. Getting modems from vendors like Qualcomm and Intel has been a standard practice for Apple and it has been pointed that it is one of the reasons why a 5G iPhone may arrive later than competition.

The Wall Street Journal report states that the deal “would give Apple access to engineering work and talent behind Intel’s years long push to develop modem chips for the crucial next generation of wireless technology known as 5G, potentially saving years of development work.” Apple has been reportedly working on developing its own chips but if the deal does go through it will expedite the process for Apple.

ذكرت صحيفة “وول ستريت جورنال” أن شركة آبل تخطط لشراء قطاع خادم (مودم) الهواتف الذكية من شركة إنتل مقابل مليار دولار، ومن الممكن الإعلان عن الصفقة في وقت مبكر من الأسبوع المقبل.

وبدأ اهتمام آبل بهذه الصفقة مباشرةً بعد انسحاب إنتل من تطوير أجهزة خادم الجيل الخامس، وتجري الشركتان محادثات متقدمة لحصول آبل على خدمات الهواتف الذكية من إنتل.

ويمنح هذا الاستحواذ شركة آبل السيطرة على جميع المواهب الموجودة لدى إنتل، التي عملت في مجال رقاقات الخادم لسنوات، كما تتيح إمكانية الوصول إلى جميع براءات اختراع إنتل، والتي قد تكون حاسمة بالنسبة للشركة المصنعة لهواتف آيفون لإنشاء أجهزة “مودم” خاصة بهاتفها الذكي، ودخول تكنولوجيا الجيل الخامس.

وكانت إنتل أعلنت -في وقت سابق هذا العام- إيقاف تطوير رقاقات للجيل الخامس بعد أن توصلت آبل إلى تسوية مفاجئة مع كوالكوم، التي تعني عودة آبل مرة أخرى إلى استخدام رقاقات كوالكوم في هواتفها. وفق الجزيرة نت.

وقال الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة إنتل بوب سوان إن الشركة المصنعة للرقاقات تخلت عن أعمال الخوادم بسبب هذه التسوية، إذ إنها لا ترى دافعًا للاستمرار دون عميلها الوحيد.

وللصفقة أبعاد عدة لشركة آبل؛ فبعد مشاكلها مع كوالكوم، وعدم قدرة إنتل على توفير رقاقات خادم الجيل الخامس ضمن هاتف آيفون.

وبالنظر إلى أن شركات تصنيع هواتف أندرويد الرائدة -مثل سامسونغ- بدأت بالفعل بيع هواتف الجيل الخامس؛ فإن ذلك يجعل آبل تسرع الخطى للحاق بركب تكنولوجيا هواتف الجيل الخامس.
