9 properties demolished

The Mechanical Equipment Department, in co-ordination with Doha Municipality and the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), has demolished nine properties in the Jebailat area, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has said.

The operation came in implementation of the demolition permit issued in this regard, the MME said in a press statement yesterday.

Meanwhile, the MME said more than 11 tonnes of dates were sold on the 11th day of the ongoing third local dates festival at Souq Waqif.

Of the total 11,353kg of dates sold on Day 11, Khalas dates accounted for 6,900kg, Khanizi 1,806kg, Shishi 1,403kg and Barhi 698kg, among others.

In total, more than 130 tonnes — or 130,520kg — of dates have been sold at the festival since its launch on July 19, while the visitor turnout in the same period is around 37,500 people, according to the statement.

The festival is open to the public until August 4, from 4pm until 10pm daily.

The MME, in co-operation with Friends of the Environment Centre, is organising an awareness lecture for the public on the occasion of the third local dates festival.

The lecture aims to raise awareness on the various types of pests that affect palm trees and how to combat them.
