MEC cracks down on butcheries for non-compliance

DOHA: The Ministry of Economy and Commerce, in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, has carried out a surprise inspection campaign targeting a number of butcheries across the country to monitor the compliance of suppliers with their obligations under applicable laws in Qatar and their commitments in line with the Ministry’s initiative when it comes to subsidised sheep prices during the holy month of Ramadan.

The inspection campaigns, which targeted 23 butcheries, resulted in 5 penalties for violations including the failure to comply with mandatory prices for local Australian meat, which represents a violation of the provisions of article (1) of Law No. 12 of 1972. Another butchery was also penalised for forcing consumers to purchase a specified quantity of meat in violation of the provisions of article (10) of Law No. 8 of 2008 on consumer protection.

Spoiled fish in large quantities were also caught at display by a supplier, which resulted in the seizure of the products and a penalty for violating article 6 of Law No. 8 of 2008 on consumer protection.

The inspection campaigns come within the framework of the Ministry’s Ramadan initiatives under the theme #Aqal_Min_Al_Wajeb.”

The Ministry has stepped up its inspection campaigns throughout the year, focusing on commercial activities that become more in demand during the holy month of Ramadan as part of its efforts to monitor markets and commercial activities in order to uncover and crack down on violations and protect consumer rights.Violations of Law No. (8) of 2008 on consumer protection can result in administrative closure and financial penalties ranging from QR3,000 to QR1m.

The Ministry said it will refer those who violate laws and ministerial decrees to competent authorities, who will in turn take appropriate action against perpetrators to protect consumer rights.

قامت وزارة الاقتصاد والتجارة، بالتعاون مع وزارة البلدية والبيئة، بتنفيذ حملة تفتيشية مفاجئة على عدد من محلات بيع اللحوم (الملاحم) في مناطق مختلفة بالدولة، وذلك لمراقبة مدى تقيد المزودين بالتزاماتهم المنصوص عليها في القوانين المنظمة المعمول بها في دولة قطر، والتأكد من مدى التزام المزودين بمبادرة الوزارة بشأن أسعار الأغنام المدعومة الخاصة بشهر رمضان المبارك.

وتأتي هذه الحملات المكثفة ضمن باقة مبادرات الوزارة التي أطلقتها بمناسبة شهر رمضان الفضيل تحت شعار: «#أقل_من_الواجب»، حيث دأبت الوزارة على تكثيف الحملات التفتيشية على مدار السنة، وزيادة التركيز على الأنشطة التجارية التي يرتفع عليها الطلب خلال شهر رمضان المبارك، وذلك في إطار حرصها على مراقبة الأسواق، بهدف ضبط الأسعار، والكشف عن التجاوزات، حفاظاً على حماية حقوق المستهلكين.

وقد أسفرت هذه الحملة التفتيشية التي شملت 23 ملحمة، عن ضبط وتحرير (5) مخالفات كانت كالتالي: عدم الالتزام بالتسعير الجبري للحوم الأسترالية المحلية، ويعد ذلك مخالفاً للمادة رقم (1) من القانون رقم 12 لسنة 1972، وكذلك تم ضبط ملحمة تقوم بفرض شراء كميات محددة من اللحوم على المستهلكين، وهو ما يعد مخالفاً لأحكام المادة رقم (10) من قانون رقم 8 لسنة 2008 بشأن حماية المستهلك، كما تم ضبط أسماك فاسدة بكميات كبيرة معروضة لدى المزود، وبالتالي تم التحفظ عليها، وتحرير مخالفة للمادة رقم (6) من القانون رقم 8 لسنة 2008 بشأن حماية المستهلك.;
