Health Ministry withdraws samples of Zantac tablets for tests

Doha: The Ministry of Public Health withdrew samples of ranitidine, including products known commercially as Zantac, from public and private pharmacies as a precaution to conduct the necessary tests.
This is among a number of other precautionary measures, following information from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) that preliminary tests revealed that these drugs contained a substance called Nnitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) at low levels, that may cause cancer in case of its presence in large quantities.
In a statement yesterday, the Ministry said that its Department of Pharmacy and International Control is coordinating with international regulatory bodies to follow up on the latest developments, especially since no institution or international organisation has so far decided to suspend or withdraw preparations containing ranitidine.
The statement added that the Ministry recommends patients who use these drugs to review and consult their doctor, and those who use them without a prescription should use other alternatives.
The Ministry clarified that it will issue the appropriate final decision as soon as the results of the final international or local tests on these drugs are issued.
FDA and EMA have issued recommendations for patients who use drugs containing ranitidine under the medical supervision of the need to consult their doctor, while patients who use these drugs without a prescription to use other alternatives.
أعلنت وزارة الصحة العامة أنها سحبت عينات من أدوية “الرانتدين” ومنها منتجات معروفة تجارياً باسم زانتاك “ZANTAC” من صيدليات القطاعين العام والخاص احترازياً لإجراء التحاليل اللازمة، وذلك ضمن عدد من الإجراءات الاحترازية الأخرى، بعد ورود معلومات من الهيئة الأمريكية للغذاء والدواء “FDA” والوكالة الأوروبية للأدوية “EMA” تفيد بأن التحاليل الأولية كشفت احتواء تلك الأدوية على مادة شائبة تسمى Nnitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) ، بمستويات منخفضة والتي قد تسبب السرطان في حالة تواجدها بكميات كبيرة.
وذكرت الوزارة ،في بيان لها اليوم، أنها تتواصل ممثلة في إدارة الصيدلة والرقابة الدولية مع الهيئات الرقابية الدولية لمتابعة ما يستجد بخصوص هذا الموضوع، خصوصاً وأنه لم يصدر عن أي جهة أو منظمة دولية قرار حتى الآن بتعليق أو سحب المستحضرات التي تحتوي على مادة “الرانتدين”.
وأضاف البيان أن الوزارة توصي المرضى الذين يستخدمون تلك الأدوية بمراجعة واستشارة الطبيب المعالج، أما الذين يستعملونها دون وصفة طبية فعليهم استعمال بدائل أخرى.
وتوضح الوزارة أنها ستصدر القرار النهائي المناسب فور صدور نتائج التحاليل النهائية الدولية أو المحلية بخصوص هذه الأدوية.
يذكر أن الهيئة الأمريكية للغذاء والدواء والوكالة الاوروبية للأدوية، اكتفتا بإصدار توصيات للمرضى الذين يستعملون الأدوية المحتوية على الرانتدين تحت إشراف طبي بضرورة مراجعة الطبيب المعالج، أما المرضى الذين يستعملون تلك الأدوية دون وصفة طبية فعليهم استعمال بدائل أخرى.
