Qatar’s Oldest Known Natural Pearl Bead Discovered in Ancient Grave

Doha: A local excavation mission led by Dr. Ferhan Sakal, Head of Excavation and Site Management at Qatar Museums has discovered the oldest known natural pearl bead in Qatar, corresponding to the earliest human settlements on the peninsula. Dated to 4600 BCE, the historic find was enclosed within a grave at Wadi Al Debaian, one of country’s oldest Neolithic site.
“Our team has unearthed a find of considerable historic and sociological importance, pointing us to the first traceable origins of Qatar’s human settlements and their use of the locally-occurring pearl enclaves,” Faisal Abdulla Al Naimi, Director of Archaeology at Qatar Museums, said. “With each new remnant of Qatar’s past that comes to light, we gain a clearer understanding of and appreciation for our communal history and identity, which ultimately inform our aspirations for a sustainable future.”
The recently discovered grave points to the earliest known evidence of Qatar’s antique pearl diving industry, which over centuries formed the center of trade and economic influx to the country. It also offers new insights into the early civilizations occupying the peninsula, including prevalent social structures and wealth distribution.
Located a few kilometers south of Al Zubarah on Qatar’s north-west coastline, Wadi Al Debaian has yielded several important archaeological finds over the years with pottery originating from the Ubaid period (ca. 6500 to 3800 BCE) of South Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), obsidian from Anatolia (modern Turkey) and further burial sites among the ancient remnants.
Wadi Al Debaian falls under Qatar Museums’ conservation and outreach scope. Through its year-round excavations and field work, Qatar Museums aims to preserve and document Qatar’s heritage through the epochs, and to construct a link between modern communities and their past.
The Wadi Al Debaian Neolithic cemetery was excavated as part of the National Priority Research Program “Human Populations and Demographics in Qatar from the Neolithic to the late Iron Age” led by Sidra Medicine and funded by the Qatar National Research Fund.

الدوحة: أعلنت متاحف قطر، يوم أمس، اكتشاف أقدم حبة لؤلؤ طبيعي معروفة في قطر، تعود إلى أقدم المستوطنات البشرية في شبه الجزيرة.
وأوضحت أن بعثة تنقيب محلية بقيادة الدكتور فرحان سكل، رئيس قسم التنقيب وإدارة المواقع الأثرية في متاحف قطر، عثر على هذه اللقية التاريخية، التي تعود إلى عام 4600 قبل الميلاد، داخل أحد القبور في وادي الضبيعان، أحد أقدم مواقع العصر الحجري الحديث في الدولة.
وقال السيد فيصل عبدالله النعيمي مدير إدارة الآثار في متاحف قطر في تصريح له بالمناسبة: “حقق فريقنا اكتشافا ذا أهمية تاريخية واجتماعية كبيرة، يدلنا على الأصول الأولى التي يمكن تتبعها للمستوطنات البشرية في قطر، واستخدامها لجيوب اللؤلؤ الموجودة في البيئة المحلية”.
وأضاف: “مع كل اكتشاف لآثار من ماضي قطر، تغدو درايتنا أكثر وضوحا، ويتعاظم تقديرنا لقيمة تاريخنا المشترك وهويتنا، ما يؤدي في نهاية المطاف إلى تحقيق تطلعاتنا لمستقبل مستدام”.
ويقدم القبر المكتشف مؤخرا أقدم دليل معروف على مهنة الغوص على اللؤلؤ العريقة في قطر، والتي شكلت العامل الجوهري للتجارة والتدفق الاقتصادي إلى البلاد على مر القرون، كما يطرح منظورا جديدا للحضارات المبكرة التي استوطنت شبه الجزيرة، بما في ذلك البنى الاجتماعية التي كانت سائدة، وتوزيع الثروة.
ونفذت الحفريات في مقبرة وادي الضبيعان، التي تعود إلى العصر الحجري الحديث، ضمن برنامج الأولويات الوطنية للبحث العلمي /سكان وديموغرافيا قطر من العصر الحجري الحديث إلى العصر الحديدي المتأخر/ بقيادة سدرة للطب وبتمويل من الصندوق القطري لرعاية البحث العلمي.
ويقع وادي الضبيعان على بعد بضعة كيلومترات جنوب مدينة الزبارة على الساحل الشمالي الغربي لقطر، وقد أسفر عن العديد من الاكتشافات الأثرية الهامة على مر السنين.
وتضع متاحف قطر وادي الضبيعان ضمن نطاق أعمال الترميم والتوعية التي تتولاها، ومن خلال أعمال التنقيب والعمل الميداني التي تجريها على مدار العام، تهدف متاحف قطر إلى الحفاظ على تراث قطر عبر العصور، وتوثيقه، وتمتين ارتباط المجتمعات الحديثة بماضيها.
