No Omicron variant in Qatar: Dr. Jamila Al-Ajami

Doha: Dr. Jamila Al Ajami, Executive Director of the Infection Control Department at Hamad Medical Corporation, confirmed that there are no infections with the new Coronavirus (Omicron) variant in Qatar, noting that the update of the travel and return policy that has been implemented has been taken as a precautionary measure to reduce the chances of this mutation entering the country.
Dr. Al-Ajami told Qatar TV’s “Our Lives” program: “WHO has classified this mutation as ‘of concern’, given the presence of many genetic mutations in the virus’s spike protein, which vaccines usually deal with.
“We don’t have enough information about the prevalence or severity of the virus, whether it leads to severe symptoms that require patient access to intensive care and how effective the current vaccines are, we need more time to find out,” she said.
She stressed that countries where infections with the new variant were monitored were included in the exceptional red list, and airlines suspended flights to South Africa as a precautionary measure to reduce the chances of the variant entry into the country, and there are processes to investigate any case which enters the country through early screening and isolation of suspected or virus-infected cases.
She noted that the situation in Qatar is stable with regard to the number of coronavirus infections, but attributed the slight increase in the number of infections to several reasons, including that most infections are among people who are not vaccinated or have received the second dose more than 6 months ago, in addition to the lack of compliance with precautionary measures, primarily the wearing of marks that protect against infection by 50%.

الدوحة: أكدت الدكتورة جميلة العجمي المدير التنفيذي لإدارة مكافحة العدوى بمؤسسة حمد الطبية عدم وجود أية إصابات بمتحور فيروس كورونا الجديد «أوميكرون» في قطر، مشيرة إلى أن تحديث سياسة السفر والعودة إلى البلاد التي جرى تطبيقها تم اتخاذها كإجراء احترازي للتقليل من فرص دخول هذا المتحور إلى البلاد.
وقالت د. العجمي، لبرنامج «حياتنا» المذاع على تلفزيون قطر: إن منظمة الصحة العالمية صنفت هذا المتحور بالمثير للقلق، نظرًا لوجود العديد من الطفرات الجينية في البروتين الشوكي الخاص بالفيروس والذي عادة ما تعمل اللقاحات على التعامل معه.
وقالت: لا توجد لدينا معلومات كافية حول مدى انتشار الفيروس أو شدة الإصابة به وما إذا كان يؤدي لأعراض شديدة تتطلب دخول المريض للعناية المركزة ومدى فعاليات اللقاحات الحالية في التعامل معه، نحتاج إلى المزيد من الوقت لمعرفة هذه المعلومات.
وأكدت أن الدول التي تمّ رصد إصابات بالمتحور بها تم إدراجها ضمن القائمة الحمراء الاستثنائية، كما قامت الخطوط الجوية بوقف رحلاتها إلى جنوب إفريقيا كإجراء احترازي لتقليل فرص دخول المتحوّر للبلاد، كما أن هناك عمليات تقصٍ لأي حالة تدخل البلاد عن طريق الفحص المبكر وعزل الحالات المشتبه بها أو المصابة بالفيروس.
وأشارت إلى أن الوضع في قطر مستقر فيما يتعلق بعدد الإصابات بفيروس كورونا، لكنها عزت الارتفاع الطفيف في أعداد الإصابات إلى عدة أسباب، بينها أن أغلب الإصابات بين أشخاص غير مطعمين أو مر على حصولهم على الجرعة الثانية أكثر من 6 أشهر، إضافة إلى عدم التزام البعض بالإجراءات الاحترازيّة، وفي مقدمتها ارتداء الكمامات التي تقي من الإصابة بنسبة 50%.
