1,500 children with diabetes in Qatar

Doha: Dr. Fawziya Al-Khalaf, Senior Consultant and Director of Medical Affairs for the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes – at Sidra Medicine – revealed that there is a noticeable annual increase in the number of children diagnosed with diabetes, explaining that the increase may reach 15%, and the number of children with diabetes in the country has reached 1,500 children from the age of one day to 18 years old.

“All children with diabetes are followed up at Sidra Medicine due to the presence of specialists in pediatric diabetes, explaining that Sidra Medicine provides all the necessary medical care and periodic follow-up required to maintain the health of children with diabetes so that they can easily coexist with the disease and live a perfectly normal life”. She said in an exclusive statement to Al-Raya.

She pointed out that what illustrates the escalating increase in the number of children with diabetes is the graph of the number of diabetic children since 2018, where 100 new cases were recorded during that year and in the year following 2019, 110 new cases were recorded, and in 2020, 140 new cases were recorded, and more than 150 new cases were recorded this year.

She continued: 83% of children have type 1 diabetes, which is related to genes, and the remaining 17% have type 2, which is highly associated with an unhealthy lifestyle, which leads to obesity or weight gain, which is also a major phenomenon among children, as the latest statistic conducted by the Ministry of Public Health several years ago showed a prevalence of obesity among children at 42% and the prevalence of overweight by 21%.

She added: The Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Sidra Medicine includes more than 20 morning and evening clinics, throughout the week, with an average of 15 referrals in each clinic, or about 300 referrals per week, and even more, explaining that these auditors are not new cases, but rather the vast majority of them have frequent visits to follow up on their health conditions.

She pointed out that the department has health educators and nutrition specialists to provide the necessary health instructions for patients, and to educate parents on how to deal with their diabetic children.

She added: Referrals for children with diabetes are received from health centers affiliated with the Primary Health Care Corporation, as well as from pediatric emergency departments, where the child may be diagnosed with the disease by chance, and then transferred to the specialized place to follow up on these cases, which is the Pediatric Diabetes Department in Sidra.

الدوحة: كشفت الدكتورة فوزية الخلف، استشاري أول ومدير الشؤون الطبية لقسم الغدد والسكري للأطفال -في سدرة للطب- أن هناك زيادة ملحوظة سنوية في أعداد إصابات الأطفال بالسكري، موضحة أن نسبة الزيادة قد تصل إلى 15%، كما وصل عدد الأطفال المصابين بالسكري في دولة قطر حاليًا 1500 طفل من عمر يوم إلى 18 عامًا.

وقالت في تصريحات خاصة لـ الراية : إن جميع الأطفال المصابين بالسكري يتم متابعتهم في سدرة للطب نظرًا لوجود المتخصصين في سكري الأطفال موضحة أن سدرة للطب يوفر كافة الرعاية الطبية اللازمة والمتابعة الدورية المطلوبة للحفاظ على صحة الأطفال المصابين بالسكري حتى يمكنهم التعايش مع المرض بسهولة ويعيشون حياة طبيعية تمامًا.

ولفتت إلى أن ما يوضح الزيادة المتصاعدة في أعداد الإصابات للأطفال بالمرض هو التسلسل البياني لأعداد الإصابات منذ عام 2018، حيث تم تسجيل 100 حالة جديدة خلال ذلك العام وفي العام الذي يليه 2019 تم تسجيل 110 حالات جديدة، وفي عام 2020 تم تسجيل 140 إصابة جديدة، وخلال العام الجاري تم تسجل أكثر من 150 حالة إصابة جديدة.

وتابعت: إن 83% من إصابات الأطفال بالسكري هم من النوع الأول الذي له علاقة بالجينات، والنسبة المتبقية وهي 17 % من النوع الثاني الذي يرتبط بشكل كبير بنمط الحياة غير الصحي، الذي يؤدي للإصابة بالسمنة أو زيادة الوزن، وهي ظاهرة كبيرة أيضًا بين الأطفال، حيث إن آخر إحصاء قامت به وزارة الصحة العامة قبل عدة سنوات أظهر انتشار السمنة بين الأطفال بنسبة 42% وانتشار زيادة الوزن بنسبة 21%.

وأضافت: إن قسم السكري والغدد بسدرة للطب يضم أكثر من 20 عيادة صباحية ومسائية، على مدار الأسبوع بمتوسط 15 مراجعًا في كل عيادة أي حوالي 300 مراجع في الأسبوع، وقد يزيد العدد عن ذلك، موضحة أن هؤلاء المراجعين ليسوا حالات جديدة بل إن الغالبية العظمي فيهم لهم زيارات متكررة لمتابعة حالاتهم الصحية.

وأشارت إلى أن القسم به مثقفات صحيات وأخصائيات للتغذية لتقديم الإرشادات الصحية اللازمة للمرضي، وتثقيف الأهالي بكيفية التعامل مع أبنائهم مرضى السكري.

وأضافت: إنه يتم استقبال تحويلات الأطفال المصابين بالسكري من المراكز الصحية التابعة لمؤسسة الرعاية الصحية الأولية وكذلك من أقسام طوارئ الأطفال حيث قد يتم اكتشاف إصابة الطفل بالمرض بالصدفة ومن ثم يتم تحويله إلى المكان المتخصص لمتابعة هذه الحالات وهو قسم سكري الأطفال في سدرة.
