Man City cruise to derby win as United home woes continue

MANCHESTER: Premier League champions Manchester City cruised to a 2-0 win over struggling Manchester United in their derby at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Gifted two goals by United in the first half, City were happy to control the game after the break, while their hosts failed to present any sort of real threat.
“The best way to silence Old Trafford is to have the ball and we did it,” said City manager Pep Guardiola.
“I know how big talented players like Cristiano (Ronaldo) are, they suffer when they don’t have the ball. We wanted that,” he added.
It was ultimately a disappointing derby with City’s superiority in all areas confirmed abundantly while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s showed once again they simply lack enough quality to mount even a token title bid.
There has been constant speculation over Solskjaer’s future since the 5-0 home loss to Liverpool two weeks ago, but the Norwegian said his focus was on getting the team back to the promising form they had shown earlier in his reign.
“We can’t, or I can’t, look at myself and say this is the way I want Man United to play. I’m in good communication all the time with the club,” he said.
“I work for Man United, I want the best for Man United and, of course, as long as I’m here, I want to do what I can do to improve this,” he added.
United are now winless in their last four home league games, losing three of them. City are second, two point behind leaders Chelsea who host Burnley later on Saturday.
City were handed an ideal start, going ahead in the seventh minute with an own goal from United defender Eric Bailly, who stretched out a leg but turned a low Joao Cancelo cross into his own net.
Cristiano Ronaldo forced Ederson into a full-stretch save with a fine volley, but that turned out to be United’s sole effort on the City goal.
United, shaky at the back despite playing a three-man central defence, relied on goalkeeper David De Gea to keep them in the game as the Spaniard made a series of saves.
De Gea smothered a close range effort from Gabriel Jesus and tipped over a long-range shot from Cancelo before reacting well to stop another potential own goal after Victor Lindelof turned a low Phil Foden ball towards his own net.
The Spanish keeper then rose to the challenge again to deny Kevin De Bruyne as City searched for a second.
But just before the break, Pep Guardiola’s side profited from more woeful United defending with Luke Shaw inexplicably leaving a Cancelo cross deep to the back post, allowing Bernardo Silva to sneak in and poke a shot goalward that crept past De Gea.
It was a moment which undid all De Gea’s work and left United with a mountain to climb in the second half. In truth, however, they hardly got to base camp.
Substitute Jadon Sancho brought some life to United on the wing but there was no real pressure on City’s unruffled back line, while at the other end the visitor’s twice could have added to their tally.
De Bruyne at the back post blasted a volley wide and then Foden drilled a low shot wide of De Gea’s left-hand post.
United are eight points behind Chelsea in fifth place but are likely to fall further back after Saturday’s later games, while City very much remain in the race for top spot.
“We had the game of our lives today. Everything went right, a lot of possession and chances. We dominated from start to finish,” said Foden.

وقال بيب جوارديولا مدرب سيتي “أفضل طريقة لإسكات جماهير يونايتد في أولد ترافورد هو الاحتفاظ بالكرة وهذا ما فعلناه.
“أدرك حجم المواهب الكبيرة التي يملكها المنافس مثل كريستيانو (رونالدو)، لكنهم يعانون عندما لا يمتلكون الكرة. وهذا ما أردناه”.
وكانت مباراة قمة مخيبة للآمال، حيث أكد سيتي تفوقه من كافة النواحي بشكل كبير وأظهر فريق المدرب أولي جونار سولشار مرة اخرى أنه ببساطة يفتقر إلى الجودة الكافية للمنافسة على اللقب حتى ولو بشكل رمزي.
وكانت هناك تكهنات مستمرة بشأن مستقبل سولشار منذ الخسارة 5-صفر على أرضه أمام ليفربول قبل أسبوعين، لكن المدرب النرويجي قال إن تركيزه كان ينصب على إعادة الفريق إلى المستوى الواعد الذي أظهره في وقت سابق من عهده.
وقال “لا نستطيع أو لا أستطيع النظر لنفسي والقول إن هذه الطريقة التي أريد أن يلعب بها مانشستر يونايتد. أنا على تواصل جيد ودائم مع النادي.
“أعمل من أجل مانشستر يونايتد، أريد الأفضل للفريق وبالطبع طالما أنا هنا أريد أن أفعل كل ما يمكنني فعله لتحسين الأوضاع”.
ولم يحقق يونايتد أي انتصار في اخر أربع مباريات على أرضه وخسر ثلاث منها. ويحتل سيتي المركز الثاني متأخرا بفارق نقطتين عن تشيلسي المتصدر الذي يستضيف بيرنلي في وقت لاحق يوم السبت.
وبدأ سيتي المباراة بشكل رائع عندما تقدم بعد سبع دقائق بهدف عكسي لمدافع يونايتد إيريك بايي بالخطأ في مرماه عندما حول تمريرة عرضية من جواو كانسيلو إلى شباك فريقه.
وأطلق كريستيانو رونالدو تسديدة قوية أجبرت إيدرسون حارس سيتي على التصدي لها بشكل رائع، لكن كانت المحاولة الوحيدة ليونايتد على مرمى سيتي.
واعتمد يونايتد، الذي كان دفاعه مهزوزا رغم دفعه بثلاثة لاعبين في الدفاع، على حارسه ديفيد دي خيا للإبقاء عليه في المباراة حيث تصدى الحارس الإسباني لسلسلة من الفرص.
وتصدى دي خيا لتسديدة من مدى قريب لجابرييل جيسوس واخرى من مدى بعيد من كانسيلو، وكان رد فعله رائعا عندما منع هدف عكسي اخر بعدما حول فيكتور ليندلوف تسديدة منخفضة من فيل فودن نحو مرماه.
وتألق الحارس الإسباني مرة اخرى ليحرم كيفن دي بروين من تسجيل الهدف الثاني لسيتي.
لكن قبل نهاية الشوط الأول مباشرة، استفاد فريق المدرب بيب جوارديولا من أخطاء دفاع يونايتد المتكررة عندما سمح لوك شو، لسبب غير مفهوم، لتمريرة عرضية في العمق عبر كانسيلو بالوصول إلى برناردو سيلفا على القائم البعيد ليضع الكرة في شباك دي خيا.
وكانت هذه اللحظة التي ألغت مجهودات دي خيا طوال الشوط الأول وتركت يونايتد في موقف صعب بالشوط الثاني.
وجلب الجناح البديل جيدون سانشو بعض الحياة ليونايتد لكن لم يكن هناك أي ضغط حقيقي على دفاع سيتي الذي بدا غير منزعج على الإطلاق، بينما في الجانب الاخر سنحت للضيوف فرصتين لمضاعفة النتيجة.
وأطلق دي بروين تسديدة مباشرة لكن مرت إلى جوار المرمى ثم أطلق فودن تسديدة منخفضة مرت إلى جوار القائم الأيسر لمرمى دي خيا.
ويتأخر يونايتد بفارق ثماني نقاط عن تشيلسي في المركز الخامس لكن من المرجج تراجعه في الترتيب بعد نهاية مباريات يوم السبت، بينما لا يزال سيتي ينافس على الصدارة.
وقال فودن “قدمنا مباراة رائعة اليوم. كل شيء كان صحيحا، استحوذها على الكرة كثيرا وسنحت لنا الكثير من الفرص. هيمنا على المباراة من البداية للنهاية”.
