Supervisory Committee plants over 4,400 trees along Al Shamal Road

Doha: The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar continues tree-planting works along Al Shamal Road, where more than 4,400 trees are being planted along both sides of this vital highway between Doha Festival City and Al Khor.

Regarding the project, Eng. Jassim Abdulrahman Fakhroo, Project Manager at the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar, said, “The importance of this plantation initiative lies in the location of the project on Al Shamal Road, which is one of the vital routes in Qatar’s highway network, as it connects several destinations and residential neighbourhoods. Planting trees and increasing green areas in Qatar are among major tasks of the Committee aimed at enhancing the quality of life and improving the overall aesthetic appearance of the country.”

Eng. Jassim also added that the project works include planting 4,477 trees along 23km of Al Shamal Road in both directions. Most of the tree species are of local origin and commensurate with the nature of the Qatari environment and characterised by their resistance to dry climatic conditions, such as Sidr tree and Acacia Arabica. These species are selected considering lesser needs for water and maintenance. 

About 95 percent of the tree plantation is completed, and the project would be delivered in full in the third quarter of this year. The project’s scope also includes connection with treated sewage effluent (TSE) lines for irrigation and provision of shaded places on both sides of Al Shamal Road.

It is worth noting that Ashghal has recently developed Al Shamal Road with the construction of service roads throughout the highway with a length of about 200km, beginning from the north part of Doha city at Duhail Interchange until Al Shamal City in the northern tip of the country. 

The development works also included adding two new interchanges at Izghawa and Umm Salal, and expansion works on three interchanges including Al Huwaila Interchange, Al Kheesa Interchange, and Al Kharaitiyat Interchange, besides development works of Al Khor Road and Umm Birka Road. The expansion project also included the construction of a connected bicycle path along the road.

The Committee works in coordination with several ministries and other entities of the State such as the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Qatar Museums Authority, Qatar Railway Company, Private Engineering Bureau, among others. 

This Committee is responsible for five major tasks, including constructing central public parks, neighbourhood parks and providing dedicated lanes for pedestrians and bicycles, the development of the Doha Corniche, the development of Central Doha, and increasing trees green areas.

The Committee’s work will contribute to enhance sustainability through minimising environmental pollution, reducing the emission of CO2 through minimized consumption, and conservation of energy resources. 

It will also focus on providing more public transport options aiming at reduced use of private cars and improve lifestyle through clean and safe transportation. It will also work to provide a healthy environment within residential neighborhoods and places of public gatherings through increased afforestation and landscaping, which will significantly help reduce the temperature in cities. 

تواصل لجنة الإشراف على تجميل الطرق والأماكن العامة بالدولة تنفيذ أعمال التشجير على طول طريق الشمال، حيث تجري زراعة أكثر من 4,400 شجرة في كلا اتجاهي الطريق بين مجمع الدوحة فستيفال سيتي والخور.

وحول مميزات المشروع قال المهندس جاسم عبد الرحمن فخرو، مدير المشروع بلجنة الإشراف على تجميل الطرق والأماكن العامة بالدولة: “يزيد من أهمية أعمال التشجير موقع المشروع على طريق الشمال وهو من أكثر الطرق حيوية ضمن شبكة الطرق السريعة في البلاد بسبب ربطه لعدد كبير من الوجهات الرئيسية والمناطق السكنية، كما أن زراعة الأشجار وزيادة المسطحات الخضراء يعد جزءا رئيسيا من مهام لجنة الإشراف على تجميل الطرق والأماكن العامة بالدولة والتي تهدف إلى رفع جودة الحياة وتحسين المنظر العام للبلاد”.

وأضاف المهندس جاسم أن أعمال المشروع تشمل زراعة 4477 شجرة على امتداد 23 كيلومترا من طريق الشمال في كلا الاتجاهين، وهي معظمها من الأشجار المحلية مثل شجرة السدر، والصمغ العربي، والتي تتناسب مع طبيعة البيئة القطرية وتتميز بمقاومتها للظروف المناخية الجافة، كما تمت مراعاة تقليل استهلاك المياه وأعمال الصيانة المستقبلية عند اختيار نوع الأشجار.

وقد تم حتى الآن الانتهاء من حوالي 95% من أعمال التشجير والمخطط اكتمالها خلال الربع الثالث من العام الجاري 2021. كما تم ضمن نطاق المشروع الانتهاء من توصيل خطوط مياه الصرف المعالجة لري الأشجار، بالإضافة إلى توفير أماكن مظللة على جانبي طريق الشمال.

طريق الشمال

يذكر أن هيئة الأشغال العامة “أشغال” قامت بتطوير طريق الشمال مؤخراً، حيث قامت بإنشاء طرق خدمية على طول طريق الشمال بطول حوالي 200 كيلومتر، ابتداءً من القسم الشمالي من مدينة الدوحة عند تقاطع الدحيل، وحتى مدينة الشمال في شمال البلاد، بالإضافة إلى إنشاء تقاطعين جديدين في منطقة ازغوى وأم صلال، وتنفيذ أعمال التطوير والتوسعة لثلاثة تقاطعات كتقاطع لحويلة وتقاطع الخيسة وتقاطع الخريطيات، بجانب أعمال تطوير طريقي الخور وأم بركة. كما تم إنشاء مسار خاص بالدراجات الهوائية على طول امتداد الطريق.

لجنة الإشراف على تجميل الطرق والأماكن العامة بالدولة

تعمل اللجنة بالتنسيق مع عدة وزارات وهيئات حكومية بالدولة كوزارة البلدية والبيئة، ووزارة المواصلات والاتصالات ووزارة الثقافة والرياضة وهيئة المتاحف وشركة سكك الحديد القطرية والمكتب الهندسي الخاص وغيرهم. وتتضمن أعمال اللجنة خمس مهام رئيسية تشمل إنشاء حدائق عامة مركزية وحدائق الفرجان، وتوفير مسارات خاصة للمشاة والدراجات الهوائية، وتطوير كورنيش الدوحة، وتطوير منطقة الدوحة المركزية، بالإضافة إلى أعمال التشجير وزيادة المسطحات الخضراء.

تساهم أعمال اللجنة أيضا في تعزيز الاستدامة من خلال التقليل من التلوث البيئي وتقليل نسبة انبعاث ثاني أكسيد الكربون والتقليل من استهلاك موارد الطاقة والحفاظ عليها، حيث تساهم مشاريع اللجنة في توفير مسارات متصلة للمشاة والدراجات الهوائية مما يساهم في توفير خيارات للتنقل وتخفيض الاعتماد على السيارات وتحسين نمط الحياة. كما تساهم زيادة نسبة التشجير والمسطحات الخضراء في خفض درجات الحرارة في المدن وتوفير بيئة صحية داخل الأحياء السكنية وأماكن التجمعات الحيوية.
