QatarDebate Council Inaugurated in the United States of America

Doha: QatarDebate Centre, a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, opened at Western Kentucky University in the United States of America -QatarDebate Council-, in the presence of a number of officials from both sides.

The Executive Director of QatarDebate Dr. Hayat Abdullah Marafi, said that the council is a new platform that overlooks the world from the United States of America with a traditional Qatari imprint that emphasizes its role in spreading dialogue and convergence of ideas between generations.

On this occasion, she stressed that the Council is a cultural venue to deepen the skills of its visitors who are interested in the dialogue and linguistic aspects, and to discuss controversial topics that involve different opinions.

She noted that the council also constitutes a free space for Arab American students and professors to gather after being separated by distances.

In this context, she added that the center will document through the Council the efforts of the Qatar Foundation globally and the United States of America in particular, and specifically this year as it is the Year of Culture Qatar USA.

For his part, the Dean of Western Kentucky University Dr. John Sunnygard, congratulated the university administration, QatarDebate and the students on the opening of the QatarDebate Council, which reflects the permanent friendship between the university and QatarDebate.

Sunnygard added that the university looks forward to exploring new opportunities in the future for further cooperation with the center because both feel proud of the common past, expressing his happiness for launching this council in the United States, saying that it is a valuable gift that helps strengthen deep ties between peoples.

The Head of Programs and Marketing at QatarDebate Abdulrahman Al-Subaie, praised the initiative to open QatarDebate in the United States of America.

Al-Subaie said that the idea of this council at Western Kentucky University came after the centers delegation visited the university in late 2018, when its management suggested allocating a Qatari council inside the university campus in order to enhance communication between those interested in learning the Arabic language and debates.

Al-Subaie reviewed the stages of the project starting from its study and its future goals, whether at the university level or the level of the United States of America as a meeting place between students and officials at the university and the debate community and the Arabic language community in America, as well as offering various programs in partnership with QatarDebate, preserving cultural identity and practicing the most important customs and the Qatari traditions, which were on the schedule of the opening ceremony of the Council.

For his part, the Centers ambassador to the United States of America Mohammed Al-Lukhan Al-Marri, explained that the State of Qatar and the United States of America signed in 2020 a set of agreements on the sidelines of the strategic dialogue between the two sides, including the declaration of 2021 as a Year of Culture Qatar USA.

He pointed out that the QatarDebate Center began its tour this year in the United States of America with the aim of spreading debates around the world in Arabic, and its first starting point was from Western Kentucky University.

الدوحة: افتتح مركز مناظرات قطر، عضو مؤسسة قطر للتربية والعلوم وتنمية المجتمع، في جامعة ويسترن كنتاكي بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية /مجلس مناظرات قطر/، بحضور عدد من المسؤولين في الجانبين والمهتمين.

وقالت الدكتورة حياة عبدالله معرفي المدير التنفيذي لمركز مناظرات قطر إن المجلس هو منصة جديدة تطل على العالم من لولايات المتحدة الأمريكية ببصمة قطرية تقليدية تؤكد على دوره في نشر الحوار والتقاء الأفكار بين الأجيال.

وأكدت الدكتورة معرفي بهذه المناسبة أن المجلس مقر ثقافي لتعميق مهارات مرتاديه من المهتمين بالجانبين الحواري واللغوي ومناقشة المواضيع الجدلية التي تنطوي على آراء مختلفة، وتجذر فكرة أن الخلاف لا يؤدي إلى الاختلاف بل يوسع المدارة ويساعد الأطراف المتباينة على استيعاب وجهة نظر الطرف الآخر ومسبباتها ومبرراتها.

كما يشكل المجلس أيضا مساحة حرة لعرب أمريكا من الطلاب والأساتذة للتجمع والتقارب بعد أن شتتتهم الغربة والمسافات، مضيفة القول في هذا السياق “سنوثق من خلال المجلس جهود مؤسسة قطر عالميا والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية خاصة، وتحديدا هذا العام كونه العام الثقافي /قطر.. الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية/”.

من ناحيته، هنأ الدكتور جون سونيجارد عميد جامعة ويسترن كنتاكي، إدارة الجامعة ومركز مناظرات قطر والطلبة على افتتاح مجلس مناظرات قطر، ما يعبر عن الصداقة الدائمة بين الجامعة ومركز مناظرات قطر.

وأضاف “نتطلع إلى استكشاف فرص جديدة مستقبلا لمزيد من التعاون مع المركز لأننا نشعر بالفخر والاعتزاز بماضينا المشترك معا”، معربا عن سعادته لإطلاق هذا المجلس في الولايات المتحدة، قائلا إنه بمثابة هدية قيمة تساعد في تعزيز الروابط العميقة بين الشعوب.

وتابع “المجلس أكثر من مجرد لحظة متعة للمناظرة ومن ثم العودة إلى منازلنا، بل هو منزلنا وهو المكان الذي ستجرى فيه وبشكل دائم الحوارات والنقاشات سعيا لحل بعض القضايا العالمية الشائكة، من خلال الاستفادة والتعلم من بعضنا البعض”.

بدوره، أشاد السيد عبدالرحمن السبيعي مدير البرامج والتسويق بمركز مناظرات قطر، بمبادرة افتتاح مجلس مناظرات قطر في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية.

وقال السبيعي إن فكرة هذا المجلس بجامعة ويسترن كنتاكي جاءت بعد زيارة وفد المركز للجامعة آواخر عام 2018، حيث اقترحت إدارتها تخصيص مجلس قطري داخل الحرم الجامعي بهدف تعزيز التواصل بين المهتمين بتعلم اللغة العربية والمناظرات، مستعرضا مراحل المشروع بدءا من دراسته وأهدافه المستقبلية، سواء على مستوى الجامعة أو مستوى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية باعتباره مقرا للقاء بين الطلبة والمسؤولين في الجامعة ومجتمع المناظرة ومجتمع اللغة العربية في أمريكا، وكذا طرح برامج متنوعة بالشراكة مع مناظرات قطر، والمحافظة على الهوية الثقافية وممارسة أهم العادات والتقاليد القطرية المتوارثة بقدر المستطاع والتي كانت ضمن جدول حفل افتتاح المجلس.

وأوضح السيد محمد اللخن المري سفير المركز في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية من جهته أن دولة قطر والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وقعتا عام 2020 مجموعة من الاتفاقيات على هامش الحوار الاستراتيجي بينهما ومن ضمنها إعلان عام 2021 عاما ثقافيا بين الولايات المتحدة وقطر، مشيرا إلى أن مركز مناظرات قطر بدأ هذا العام جولته في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية بهدف نشر المناظرات حول العالم باللغة العربية وكانت محطة انطلاقته الأولى من جامعة ويسترن كنتاكي.
