WISE reveals theme of its 2021 summit

Doha: WISE has unveiled the theme for its 2021 summit, which aims to give a voice to the generation that has borne the brunt of the biggest disruption to education in recent history.

The event, taking place in Doha and virtually from December 8–9, will be titled ‘Generation Unmute: Reclaiming Our Future Through Education’.

For the past 18 months, the young and the unprivileged have seen their daily lives upended. Billions have been kept out of school, while others continue struggling to transition to the workplace. WISE 2021 is committed to empowering today’s youth so that together we can build a better future tomorrow.

“The WISE 2021 Summit continues our long-standing commitment of serving as the global platform for educators, decision-makers, and influential experts from Qatar and around the world to come together to rethink and build the future of education,” said Stavros N. Yiannouka, CEO of WISE.

“We are very excited to announce the theme for this year’s edition of WISE, Generation Unmute: Reclaiming our Future through Education. This overarching theme signifies the indispensable role of a demographic that has been largely silent on education amid the ongoing disruptive tremors caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The past year has created many unprecedented challenges and even exacerbated pre-existing ones which have posed a threat to our education systems. It is time to address these challenges by answering urgent questions about the role of education and its capacity to support the way we navigate disruption. The voice of the youth is paramount to achieving this and we cordially invite you all to join us here in Doha, digitally or in person.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the greatest global disruption since the Second World War, and education has not been spared. It is not enough to build back, we need to build back better. This starts with listening to the concerns and aspirations of the youth: their insights into their own education and their views on the world.

“As the world looks hopefully ahead to the end of the pandemic and discusses change, the voices of the young and underprivileged are conspicuously absent from the conversation. It’s time to make things right.

“It’s time to listen to this generation and fully harness their energy and enthusiasm to address the multiple crises facing our societies, so that together we can reclaim our future. It’s time to unmute,” said Yiannouka.

الدوحة: كشف مؤتمر القمة العالمي للابتكار في التعليم «وايز» عن موضوع قمة 2021، التي ستُعقد بعنوان: «الإصغاء لصوت الشباب.. إعادة الإمساك بزمام المستقبل عبر التعليم»، يومي 8 و9 ديسمبر القادم في نسخة افتراضية من العاصمة القطرية الدوحة، وذلك لإفساح المجال أمام صوت الجيل الذي تحمّل عبء أكبر اضطراب شهده قطاع التعليم في التاريخ الحديث، حيث عانى الشباب والمحرومون على مدار الثمانية عشر شهرًا المنصرمة من اضطراب حياتهم اليومية رأسًا على عقب، فحُرم المليارات من المدارس وكافح آخرون ولا يزالون للوصول إلى أماكن عملهم. ومن هنا، يلتزم وايز في قمته لعام 2021 بالعمل على تمكين شباب اليوم بحيث نستطيع يدًا بيد بناء مستقبل أفضل لنا جميعًا في المستقبل.

وقال ستافروس يانوكا، الرئيس التنفيذي لمؤتمر القمة العالمي للابتكار في التعليم «وايز»: «نواصل في قمتنا المنتظرة لعام 2021 التزامنا الراسخ في العمل كمنصة عالمية في خدمة التربويين وصنّاع القرار والخبراء البارزين من دولة قطر وأرجاء العالم وجمعهم معًا لإعادة تصور المشهد التعليمي وبناء مستقبله. كما يسعدنا الإعلان عن موضوع قمة هذا العام، وهو «الإصغاء لصوت الشباب.. إعادة الإمساك بزمام المستقبل عبر التعليم».

وأضاف:«وهذا الموضوع الشامل إنما يدلّل على الدور المحوري لمجموعة سكانية بقيت صامتةً إزاء ما يعانيه قطاع التعليم من تعطيل مستمر بسبب جائحة كوفيد-19. فقد أثقلت السنة الماضية كواهلنا بتحديات جديدة غير مسبوقة، بل وفاقمت التحديات القائمة أصلاً، ما شكّل تهديدًا حقيقيًا لأنظمة التعليم. وقد حان وقت التصدي لهذه التحديات عبر مناقشة الأسئلة الملحّة التي تتناول دور التعليم وقدرته على دعم الطريقة التي نتعامل بها مع التعطيل الحاصل. وبما أن صوت الشباب له أهمية كبرى في تحقيق النتائج المرجوّة، فإننا نتشرف بدعوتكم للانضمام إلينا في مدينة الدوحة، شخصيًا أو افتراضيًا».

لقد تسببت جائحة كوفيد-19 في أكبر تعطيل شهده العالم منذ الحرب العالمية الثانية، ولم يكن التعليم بمنأى عنه في حال من الأحوال. لم يعد يكفي بناء ما تهدّم، بل يتحتّم علينا بناؤه على نحو أفضل، والبداية إنما تكون بالاستماع إلى مخاوف الشباب وتطلعاتهم والوقوف على تصوراتهم بشأن التعليم والمشكلات العالمية الأخرى.
