UDC Inaugurates ‘Seabin’ Project to Maintain Clean Waters

Doha: United Development Company (UDC) inaugurated a new environmental Seabin project, the first of its kind in the State of Qatar, to prevent sea pollution and protect marine species at The Pearl-Qatar.

The event, which took place on the occasion of World Environment Day, was held in Porto Arabia Marina where the seabins have been installed in ten different locations, in the presence of senior officials from UDC and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.

Driven by UDC’s commitment to sustainability practices, the seabin project is a multi-award-winning invention that acts as a floating trash bin and sucks waste including plastic, oils and contaminants from the water of docks and marinas, removing hazards to marine life and maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

The seabin is made from recycled material and its catch bag can hold up to 20 kilograms. Each day, the seabin has the potential to collect almost four kilograms of floating water pollution and filters over two million liters of water. Per year, the seabin can collect approximately 1.4 tons of debris. This is as many as 90,000 plastic shopping bags, 11,900 plastic bottles, 50,000 water bottles, 35,700 disposable cups, and 117,600 plastic utensils.

Seabin collected waste is recycled and reused as part of UDC’s ongoing recycling program which has helped recycle 22 percent of total waste generated at The Pearl-Qatar.

Starting with ten seabins in Porto Arabia, UDC estimates that within one year, 15 tons of microplastics, marine litter, oil, fuel and plastic fibers will be removed by filtering 2.3 billion liters of water. UDC further plans to increase seabins up to 30, covering more locations in Porto Arabia and Qanat Quartier.

The Pearl-Qatar prides itself in its multiple initiatives that reflect positively on the environment through recycling, pollution reduction, energy and water saving measures. Through its recycling and waste management strategy, UDC was able to achieve significant environmental savings at The Pearl-Qatar which contribute to a healthy and balanced ecosystem, preserve natural resources and ensure the wellbeing of the Islands residents and community

UDC also plays a vital role in the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) which aims to position the State of Qatar as a pioneer in climate change initiatives and is soon to introduce a new technology that leads to significant reduction in carbon footprint.

الدوحة: دشّنت الشركة المتحدة للتنمية، مشروع “السلال البحرية” البيئي الجديد، وهو الأول من نوعه في دولة قطر، للحدّ من تلوّث البحر وحماية الكائنات البحرية في مياه جزيرة اللؤلؤة-قطر.

وأقيمت فعالية التدشين التي صادفت اليوم العالمي للبيئة، في /مارينا بورتو أرابيا/، حيث وُضعت السلال البحرية في 10 مواقع مختلفة، بحضور مسؤولين من وزارة البلدية والبيئة والشركة المتحدة للتنمية.

وانطلاقاً من التزام الشركة المتحدة للتنمية بممارسات الاستدامة، فإن مشروع السلال البحرية هو اختراع حاصل على العديد من الجوائز ويعمل كصندوق عائم لجمع المخلّفات البحرية عن طريق امتصاص النفايات بما في ذلك البلاستيك والزيوت والملوثات من مياه الموانئ والمراسي، مما يحمي الكائنات البحرية من المخاطر ويحافظ على نظام بيئي صحي.

وتتميّز السلال البحرية بأنها مصنوعة من مواد معاد تدويرها، حيث تصل حمولة كل سلّة إلى 20 كيلوجراماً وبإمكانها امتصاص 4 كيلوغرامات يوميّاً من المخلّفات العائمة على سطح المياه وتصفية أكثر من مليوني لتر من المياه. كما تستطيع هذه السلال جمع ما يقارب 1.4 طن من المخلّفات سنوياً، أي ما يعادل 90,000 كيس بلاستيكي، و11,900 زجاجة بلاستيكية، و50,000 زجاجة مياه، و35,700 كوب بلاستيكي، و117,600 أواني بلاستيكية.

كذلك يتمّ إعادة تدوير النفايات المجمعة من السلال البحرية وإعادة استخدامها كجزء من برنامج إعادة التدوير الخاص بالشركة المتحدة للتنمية والذي يساهم في إعادة تدوير 22 من إجمالي النفايات في جزيرة اللؤلؤة-قطر.

وبدءاً من عشر سلال بحرية في منطقة بورتو أرابيا، تقدّر الشركة المتحدة للتنمية أنه في غضون عام واحد، ستتمّ إزالة 15 طناً من المايكرو بلاستيك والمخلّفات البحرية والزيوت والوقود والألياف البلاستيكية عن طريق تصفية 2.3 مليار لتر من المياه. كما تخطط الشركة لزيادة عدد السلال البحرية إلى 30، لتغطّي المزيد من المواقع في منطقتيّ بورتو أرابيا وقناة كارتييه.

وتفتخر جزيرة اللؤلؤة-قطر بمبادراتها المتعددة التي تنعكس إيجاباً على البيئة من خلال إعادة التدوير، والحدّ من التلوّث، وتدابير توفير الطاقة والمياه، حيث تمكّنت الشركة المتحدة للتنمية من تحقيق إنجازات بيئية كبيرة في جزيرة اللؤلؤة-قطر، مما يساهم في الحفاظ على نظام بيئي صحي ومتوازن وعلى الموارد الطبيعية إلى جانب ضمان رفاهية سكّان الجزيرة ومجتمعها.

كذلك تلعب الشركة المتحدة للتنمية دوراً حيويّاً في خطة العمل الوطنية لتغير المناخ (NCCAP) التي تهدف إلى وضع دولة قطر في مقدمة الدول التي تساهم في مبادرات تغير المناخ، حيث ستقوم الشركة المتحدة للتنمية قريباً بتدشين تقنية جديدة تؤدي إلى خفض كبير في البصمة الكربونية.
