The annual Crystal Cabin Awards, in Hamburg, which honors the latest innovations in aviation, saw the unveiling of proposed designs for new aircraft seats for economy class passengers.
According to Russia Today, the new seat designs “will revolutionize the way passengers travel, with double-decker rows providing additional legroom”.
The new design will allow seats to be placed at two levels of height, with the Chaise Longue project showing two rows of seats, one on the cabin floor and the other slightly higher, allowing passengers to have extra legroom without disturbing others, the website quoted the British newspaper The Sun as saying.
Seats bend without affecting passengers in the back, and include adjustable back and neck rests. Luggage will be stored under seats in compartments instead of overhead lockers, allowing for additional height.
Alejandro Nunez Vicente, a 21-year-old Spanish design student who studies at TU Delft University in the Netherlands, said he came up with the idea because there was no legroom on short trips in Europe.
“The current economy class is often limited to one or slightly slanted mode that prevents the passenger from enjoying a comfortable flight,” he told CNN.
“The lower row has the advantage of passengers enjoying the sofa lounge experience where they can stretch their legs, while the upper row provides the SUV experience, making crossing your legs possible if you wanted for example and that is due to the increased leg space and total sitting space”.
He said that they are also working on post-Covid-19 flights: “Because it provides more space among passengers and puts them at different levels, it is a more convenient design for flights in times of the epidemic”.
While it had not yet been a realistic seat design, he said that some airlines had already shown interest. Airlines are looking at how to make the economic experience better, without paying for first class.

وأوضح الموقع نقلاً عن صحيفة “صن” البريطانية أن التصميم الجديد سيتيح وضع المقاعد على مستويين من الارتفاع، حيث يُظهر مشروع المقعد الاقتصادي “تشيز لونغ” (Chaise Longue) صفين من المقاعد، أحدهما في أرضية المقصورة والآخر مرتفع قليلاً، وهو ما يسمح للركاب بالحصول على مساحة إضافية للأرجل دون إزعاج الآخرين.
وتنحني المقاعد دون التأثير على الركاب في الخلف، وتتضمن مساند ظهر ورقبة قابلة للتعديل. وسيتم تخزين الأمتعة تحت المقاعد في مقصورات بدلاً من الخزائن العلوية، ما يسمح بارتفاع إضافي.
وقال أليخاندرو نونيز فيسنتي، طالب التصميم الإسباني، البالغ من العمر 21 عاماً، والذي يدرس في جامعة TU Delft في هولندا، إنه توصل إلى الفكرة بسبب عدم وجود مساحة للساقين في الرحلات القصيرة في أوروبا.
