WhatsApp announces surprise over plan to accept updates

WhatsApp has announced that it is backing away from the latest stage of its plan to deny users specific features in the app to force them to accept the controversial privacy updates policy.

“Given recent discussions with various authorities and privacy experts, we want to make it clear that we will not limit the functions of how WhatsApp works for those who have not yet accepted the update,” a WhatsApp spokesman said in a statement to The Verge yesterday, adding that “this is the plan that goes ahead indefinitely,” Sputnik said.

Earlier in May, WhatsApp said users would lose their features over time if they did not accept its new privacy policy by May 15.

وهددت أن المستخدمين الرافضين لسياسة خصوصيتها الجديدة لن يتمكنوا من الوصول إلى قائمة الدردشة، لكنهم سيظلون قادرين على الرد على المكالمات، وفي حال تشغيل الإشعارات فسيتم إرسال الرسائل، إلا أنه وبعد بضعة أسابيع من محدودية الوظائف، لن يتمكن المستخدمون من تلقي المكالمات والإشعارات الواردة، وسيتوقف التطبيق عن إرسال الرسائل والمكالمات.

وكانت سياسة الخصوصية الجديدة لتطبيق “واتساب” مصدراً للجدل لعدة أشهر، وأثارت مخاوف عالمية من أن يبدأ تطبيق المراسلة الفوري الشهير في مشاركة المزيد من بيانات المستخدمين الشخصية مع شركته “فيسبوك”، لكن شدد “واتساب” على أن هذا ليس هو الحال، على الرغم من أن تحديث سياسته يتعلق بالرسائل المرسلة إلى الشركات من خلاله، والتي قد تكون مخزنة على خوادم “فيسبوك”.
