IOC Chief: Tokyo Games Will Go Ahead This Summer

Geneva: International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has reiterated the Tokyo Games will go ahead this summer despite overwhelming public opposition in Japan, where much of the country is under a state of emergency to combat spiraling coronavirus infections.

In statements reported by Japan’s News Agency (Kyodo), Bach said “sacrifices” would be necessary to ensure the games can be held.

The IOC chief touted the vaccination of athletes among a range of measures to ensure “a safe environment” at the games.

During an online conference held Friday, senior IOC official John Coates indicated the July 23 to Aug. 8 Olympics would be held even if the Japanese capital remained under a state of emergency.

In the middle of this month, the Japanese government announced the expansion of the state of emergency imposed in the country, due to the Corona virus pandemic, while activists submitted a petition calling for the cancellation of the event bearing the signature of more than 352,000 people.

More than 352,000 people signed an online petition entitled “Cancel the Tokyo Olympics to Protect Our Lives,” launched in early May by Kenji Utsunomiya, an attorney and former candidate for governor of Tokyo.

“The particularly high speed with which signatures were collected in Japan reflects public opinion,” Utsunomiya said, with polls conducted since last year showing that 60 to 70 percent of residents are against holding the Games this summer.

وفي تصريحات نقلتها وكالة الأنباء اليابانية /كيودو/ قال باخ، إن “التضحيات” ستكون ضرورية لضمان إقامة الألعاب، مؤكدا أن تطعيم الرياضيين سيكون من ضمن مجموعة من الإجراءات لضمان “بيئة آمنة” في الألعاب.

وكان السيد جون كوتس، المسؤول البارز في اللجنة الأولمبية الدولية، قد أكد يوم /الجمعة/ الماضي أن الألعاب الأولمبية في الفترة من 23 يوليو إلى 8 أغسطس ستقام حتى إذا ظلت العاصمة اليابانية في حالة طوارئ.

وكانت الحكومة اليابانية قد أعلنت منتصف الشهر الجاري توسيع حالة الطوارئ المفروضة في البلاد بسبب جائحة فيروس كورونا لتشمل ثلاث مقاطعات إضافية، في حين قدم نشطاء عريضة يطالبون فيها بإلغاء الحدث حملت توقيع أكثر من 352 ألف شخص.

ووقع 352 ألف شخص على عريضة على الإنترنت بعنوان “ألغوا أولمبياد طوكيو لحماية حياتنا”، أطلقها في أوائل مايو كنجي أوتسونوميا، المحامي والمرشح السابق لمنصب حاكم طوكيو.

وقال أوتسونوميا في تصريح للصحافيين “السرعة الكبيرة بشكل خاص التي تم بها جمع التوقيعات في اليابان تعكس الرأي العام”، حيث أظهرت استطلاعات الرأي التي أجريت منذ العام الماضي أن 60 إلى 70 بالمئة من السكان يعارضون إقامة الألعاب هذا الصيف.
