Apple has rejected a request from Facebook to remove negative comments on its App Store, after supporters of the Palestinian cause coordinated an effort to lower the app ratings because of censorship on Palestinian content, NBC News reported Sunday.
Facebook received 2.3 of the “5 star” rating in the app store compared to more than four stars last week.
The largest category of ratings was one-star ratings, with several comments saying that their rating was due to Facebook’s ratings such as #FreePalestine or #GazaUnderAttack.
“User confidence is falling significantly with the recent escalation between Israel and Palestine,” a senior software engineer said in a post on the internal message board on Facebook.
“Our users are upset with the way we deal with the situation, users feel censored, they get limited distribution of posts, they are eventually silenced. As a result, our users have begun to protest by leaving ratings with one star.”
An internal letter reviewed by NBC showed that the company was very concerned about coordinated efforts to cut ratings.
Facebook subsequently contacted the App Store to remove negative comments, and Apple declined the request.

وحصل تطبيق فيسبوك على 2.3 من تصنيف الـ”5 نجوم” في متجر التطبيقات مقارنة بتصنيف أكثر من أربع نجوم، الأسبوع الماضي.
وكانت أكبر فئة من التصنيفات هي التقييمات بنجمة واحدة، حيث تقول عديد من التعليقات إن تصنيفها يرجع إلى علامات التصنيف التي يفرضها “فيسبوك” مثل #FreePalestine أو #GazaUnderAttack.
وقال مهندس برمجيات كبير في منشور على لوحة الرسائل الداخلية على “فيسبوك”: “إن ثقة المستخدم تنخفض بشكل كبير مع التصعيد الأخير بين إسرائيل وفلسطين”.
وأضاف: “مستخدمونا مستاؤون من طريقة تعاملنا مع الموقف، يشعر المستخدمون بأنهم يخضعون للرقابة، ويحصلون على توزيع محدود للمنشورات، ويتم إسكاتهم في النهاية، ونتيجة لذلك، بدأ مُستخدمونا في الاحتجاج من خلال ترك تقييمات بنجمة واحدة”.
وأظهرت رسالة داخلية راجعتها “إن بي سي”، أن الشركة كانت قلقة للغاية بشأن الجهود المنسقة لخفض التصنيفات.
وعلى أثر ذلك، اتصل “فيسبوك” بمتجر التطبيقات لإزالة التعليقات السلبية، ورفضت “آبل” الطلب.
