High cholesterol is often the result of an unhealthy lifestyle, but genes can also play a role. If your blood contains a lot of cholesterol (cholesterol carried by low-density lipoprotein), it is known as high cholesterol. When left untreated, high cholesterol can lead to many health problems including heart attacks or stroke.
1. Pain in the hands
When there is an accumulation of plaques (fatty deposits) it blocks the arteries, which is called atherosclerosis.
These deposits consist of cholesterol, fatty substances, cellular waste products, calcium and fibrin.
When cholesterol builds up in the body, it can block blood vessels in the hands. Cholesterol build-up can occur continuously and make your hands hurt.
2. Strange growth on the skin
If you see a yellowish orange growth on your skin, you may have deposits of cholesterol under your skin.
These painless deposits can appear in many areas, including corners of the eyes, lines in the palm of the hand or the back of the lower legs.
If you notice these increases in any area of your skin, consult your doctor.
3. Blue ring in the eyes
One sign of high cholesterol in the eye is a snarled ring formed near the outer part of the cornea, the clear front of the eye.
These rings, called “Arcus Senilis”, are more common with older age as more cholesterol is deposited in the cornea.
Arcus senilis is generally considered harmless, although it may sometimes be a sign of high cholesterol in people under the age of 45.
