EU country to grant every tourist 200£ this summer

Doha: Malta’s Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo on Friday announced a plan to restore life to the country’s tourism sector, with his country planning to provide 200 euros ($238.10) to every tourist who decided to stay at least three days on the Mediterranean island this summer.

The minister said that with most of the restrictions related to Coronavirus expected to be lifted, tourists booking summer holidays directly through local hotels will receive the grant, noting that tourists who will book to stay in a five-star hotel will receive 100 euros from Malta’s tourism authority for 200 euros from the hotel, Reuters reported.

Those who choose a four-star hotel will also receive a total of €150, those booking a three-star hotel will receive €100, and the grant will rise by 10% when hotels are booked on the small Maltese island of Gozo, three kilometres north of the mainland.

Bartolo added that the plan aims to put Malta hotels in a competitive position as international tourism resumes, and about 35,000 visitors are expected to benefit from the plan.

 Data from the World Travel and Tourism Council show that the tourism sector directly and indirectly accounts for more than 27 percent of the country’s economy, but the sector has been affected by the Coronavirus epidemic, while the country attracted more than 2.7 million foreign visitors in 2019, but figures have fallen by more than 80% since the virus emerged in March 2020.

Malta has the highest corona vaccination rate in the EU after being able to vaccinate 42 percent of adults with at least one dose, and the country has recorded a significant decline in the number of cases of Coronavirus, with the rate of positive cases dropping to 2.6 percent, and the government is urging the EU to introduce vaccine passports to facilitate travel.

الوزير قال إنه مع توقع رفع معظم القيود المتعلقة بفيروس كورونا، فإن السياح الذين يحجزون عطلات صيفية مباشرة من خلال الفنادق المحلية سوف يتلقون المنحة، مشيرا إلى أن السياح الذين سيحجزون للإقامة في فندق خمس نجوم سيحصلون على 100 يورو من هيئة السياحة في مالطا تقابل بمبلغ 200 يورو من الفندق وفقا لوكالة رويترز.

كما سيحصل الذين يختارون فندقا من فئة أربع نجوم على ما مجموعه 150 يورو، وسيحصل الذين يحجزون فندقا من فئة ثلاث نجوم على 100 يورو، وترتفع المنحة بنسبة 10٪ عندما يتم الحجز في الفنادق في جزيرة غوزو المالطية الصغيرة، على بعد ثلاثة كيلومترات من شمال البر الرئيسي.

وأضاف بارتولو أن الخطة تهدف  إلى وضع فنادق مالطا في وضع تنافسي مع استئناف السياحة الدولية، ومن المتوقع أن يستفيد من الخطة نحو 000 35 زائر.

 هذا وتظهر بيانات المجلس العالمي للسفر والسياحة أن قطاع السياحة يمثل بشكل مباشر وغير مباشر أكثر من 27 في المئة من اقتصاد البلاد، ولكن القطاع تأثر بوباء فيروس كورونا ، وفي الوقت الذي جذبت البلاد أكثر من 2.7 مليون زائر أجنبي في عام 2019، لكن الأرقام انخفضت بأكثر من 80٪ منذ ظهور الفيروس في مارس 2020.

يذكر أن مالطا بلغت أعلى معدل تطعيم ضد كورونا في الاتحاد الأوروبي بعدما تمكنت من تلقيح 42 في المئة من البالغين بجرعة واحدة على الأقل، كما سجلت البلاد تراجعا كبيرا في عدد حالات الإصابة بفيروس كورونا، حيث انخفض معدل الحالات الإيجابية إلى 2.6 في المئة، وتحث الحكومة الاتحاد الأوروبي على إدخال جوازات سفر اللقاح لتسهيل السفر.
