WTO Revises Upwards Trade Growth Forecast for 2021

Geneva: Prospects for a quick recovery in world trade have improved as merchandise trade expanded more rapidly than expected in the second half of last year, according to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

According to new estimates from the WTO, the volume of world merchandise trade is expected to increase by 8 per cent in 2021 after having fallen 5.3 per cent in 2020, continuing its rebound from the pandemic-induced collapse that bottomed out in the second quarter of last year.

It added that trade growth should then slow to 4 per cent in 2022, and the effects of the pandemic will continue to be felt as this pace of expansion would still leave trade below its pre-pandemic trend.

The relatively positive short-term outlook for global trade is marred by regional disparities, continued weakness in services trade, and lagging vaccination timetables, particularly in poor countries. COVID-19 continues to pose the greatest threat to the outlook for trade, as new waves of infection could easily undermine any hoped-for recovery.

Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said, “Keeping international markets open will be essential for economies to recover from this crisis and a rapid, global and equitable vaccine roll-out is a prerequisite for the strong and sustained recovery we all need.”

“Ramping up production of vaccines will allow businesses and schools to reopen more quickly and help economies get back on their feet, she said. But as long as large numbers of people and countries are excluded from sufficient vaccine access, it will stifle growth, and risk reversing the health and economic recovery worldwide,” she added.

جنيف: رفعت منظمة التجارة العالمية توقعاتها لنمو تجارة السلع العالمية هذ العام، مشيرة إلى أن التجارة العالمية مهيأة لانتعاش قوي ولكن غير متكافئ.

وأشارت المنظمة إلى تحسن آفاق الانتعاش السريع في التجارة العالمية حيث توسعت تجارة البضائع بسرعة أكبر من المتوقع في النصف الثاني من العام الماضي، مضيفة أنه من المتوقع أن يزداد حجم التجارة السلعية العالمية بنسبة 8 في المائة في عام 2021 بعد أن انخفض بنسبة 5.3 في المائة في عام 2020.

ومن المفترض أن يتباطأ نمو التجارة بعد ذلك إلى 4 في المائة في عام 2022، وسيستمر الشعور بآثار وباء كورونا (كوفيد-19)، لأن وتيرة النمو ستظل أدنى من المستويات قبل الوباء.

واعتبرت المنظمة ان التوقعات الإيجابية على المدى القصير للتجارة العالمية تشوبها التفاوتات الإقليمية والضعف المستمر في قطاع الخدمات والتأخير في عمليات التطعيم ضد (كوفيد-19)، لاسيما في البلدان الفقيرة، كما لا يزال الفيروس يشكل أكبر تهديد لآفاق التجارة، حيث يمكن لموجات العدوى الجديدة أن تقوض بسهولة أي انتعاش مأمول.

وقد صرحت السيدة نجوزي أوكونجو إيويالا المديرة العامة لمنظمة التجارة العالمية، في بيان نشر على موقع المنظمة، بأن إبقاء الأسواق الدولية مفتوحة سيكون أمراً ضرورياً للاقتصادات للتعافي من هذه الأزمة، كما أن طرح لقاح سريع وعالمي ومنصف يعد شرطاً أساسياً لتحقيق الانتعاش القوي والمستدام.

وأضافت أن تكثيف إنتاج اللقاحات سيسمح للشركات والمدارس بإعادة فتح أبوابها بسرعة أكبر ومساعدة الاقتصادات على الوقوف على أقدامها مرة أخرى.

وأوضحت أن عدم حصول أعداد كبيرة من الناس والدول على اللقاحات الكافية سيخنق النمو ويعكس التعافي الصحي والاقتصادي في جميع أنحاء العالم.
