Elgin Baylor, Lakers legend, dies at the age of 86

Doha: American basketball fans received shocking news after the death of Elgin Baylor, the Los Angeles Lakers legend and the most famous final champion in the history of the game, at the age of 86, as announced Monday by his former team, which he defended its colors for 14 seasons between 1958 and 1971.

Baylor, best known as the greatest uncrowned player in the history of NBA after losing the final eight times, despite his role in turning the Lakers into one of the league’s most dominant teams during the 1960s, was unable to crown his legacy with a title after losing the finals eight times, including three out of seven games against their traditional rival, Boston Celtics.

Baylor also scored 61 points in one of the 1961 season finale games against the Celtics, setting a still-shocking record for a player in a final-round match, according to Russia Today.

The Lakers signed Baylor in 1958 when he was included in a draft as the number one option when the team was in Minneapolis instead of Los Angeles, and quickly left with an average of 24.9 points per game, with 15 rebounds and 4.1 assists during his first season, on his way to establishing himself as a club and league legend, until he retired in 1971 in his 14th season because of knee problems.

Baylor (1.96 m) finished with 23,149 points, averaging 27.4 points per game, 11,463 rebounds (13.5 per game) and 3,650 assists (4.3 per game).

الدوحة: تلقت جماهير كرة السلة الأمريكية خبرا صادما، بعد تأكد وفاة إلجين بايلور، أسطورة لوس أنجلوس ليكرز وبطل أشهر نهائي في تاريخ اللعبة، وذلك عن عمر 86 عاما ، بحسب ما أعلن يوم الاثنين فريقه السابق الذي دافع عن ألوانه طيلة 14 موسما بين 1958 و1971.

بايلور الذي اشتهر بأنه أعظم لاعب لم يتوج بلقب الدوري في التاريخ بعدما خسر النهائي ثماني مرات ، حيث رغم دوره في تحويل ليكرز الى أحد أكثر الفرق المهيمنة في الدوري خلال الستينات، عجز بايلور عن تتويج إرثه بلقب بعدما سقط في الدور النهائي ثماني مرات، بينها ثلاث مواجهات من سبع مباريات ضد الغريم التقليدي بوسطن سلتيكس.

كما بايلور سجل في إحدى مباريات نهائي موسم 1961 ضد سلتيكس 61 نقطة، محققا رقما قياسيا ما زال صادما حتى اليوم من حيث عدد النقاط للاعب في مباراة ضمن الدور النهائي وفقا لموقع روسيا اليوم.

ووقع خيار ليكرز على بايلور عام 1958 حين ضمه في “دارفت” كالخيار رقم واحد عندما كان الفريق في مينيابوليس عوضا عن لوس أنجلوس، وترك أثره سريعا بتحقيقه ما معدله 24,9 نقطة في المباراة الواحدة، مع 15 متابعة و4,1 تمريرة حاسمة خلال موسمه الأول، في طريقه ليفرض نفسه كأحد أساطير النادي والدوري، وصولا الى اعتزاله مجبرا عام 1971 في موسمه الرابع عشر، بسبب مشاكل في الركبة.

وأنهى بايلور (1,96 م) مسيرته وفي رصيده 23149 نقطة، بمعدل 27,4 في المباراة الواحدة، إضافة الى 11463 متابعة (بمعدل 13,5 في المباراة الواحدة) و3650 تمريرة حاسمة (4,3 في المباراة الواحدة).
