HBKU Holds Webinar on Women’s Changing Role Amid COVID-19

Doha: The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) held the second webinar in its Qatari Women’s Affairs Series, focusing on “Women’s Changing Role Amid COVID-19”.

Executive Director at Doha International Family Institute (DIFI) Dr. Sharifa Noaman Al Emadi said: “The pandemic has undoubtedly added to women’s responsibilities, more so for working women and those heading a household. Given women’s role within the family in Arab societies, and as our research at DIFI shows, safeguarding their mental and physical well-being is necessary for the entire family to do well. Hearing insights from female Qatari voices at this CHSS forum, we can draw lessons about the importance of seeking help, including mental health support, communication between family members, and finding a work-life balance.”

Founding Dean, CHSS at HBKU Dr. Amal Al Malki said after the webinar: “This event has shown how women are changing the conversation to focus on empowering one another to take on the new demands created by COVID-19. We thank our speakers for their willingness to share the contributions they are making to Qatari society, and how they are forging positive, transformative change in different environments where women have leadership roles; within the family, the workplace, and in business and industry.”

Lolwa Al Marri, graduate of MA in Women, Society, and Development program, and moderator of the webinar, said: “The Qatari Women’s Affairs series aims to tackle contemporary issues that Qatari women face amid the social and economic development in Qatar. As graduates of the MA in Women, Society, and Development program, this series is an opportunity for us to discuss related topics with experts of their fields, and address issues from different angles. It is a reflection of the program’s vision to encourage us to create our own narratives and find solutions that are relevant to our culture.”

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Hamad Bin Khalifa University has been organizing events through which it sheds light on its research activities and projects, noting that the candid discussions of the second webinar have turned into important recommendations and practices that can reduce the damages that the epidemic causes to society, and women on In particular.

وقالت الدكتورة شريفة نعمان العمادي، المديرة التنفيذية لمعهد الدوحة الدولي للأسرة، خلال الندوة التي تتزامن مع اليوم العالمي للمرأة، إن الجائحة قد أضافت بلا شك الكثير إلى مسؤوليات المرأة، لا سيما العاملة والنساء المسؤولات عن عائلاتهن، مشيرة إلى أنه “بالنظر إلى دور المرأة داخل الأسرة في المجتمعات العربية، وكما يظهر بحثنا في معهد الدوحة الدولي للأسرة، فإن الحفاظ على صحتهن النفسية والبدنية أمر ضروري لكي تتصرف العائلة بأكملها على نحو جيد”.

وأضافت أنه “بعد الاستماع إلى آراء من أصوات قطريات في هذه الندوة، يمكن استخلاص دروس حول أهمية طلب المساعدة، بما في ذلك دعم الصحة النفسية، والتواصل بين أفراد الأسرة وتحقيق التوازن بين مسؤوليات العمل والحياة”.

من ناحيتها، أفادت الدكتورة أمل المالكي، العميدة المؤسسة لكلية العلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية، بأن هذه الفعالية أظهرت كيف للنساء أن يساهمن في تغيير الحوار للتركيز على تمكينهن من مواجهة المتطلبات الجديدة الناجمة عن الجائحة، متوجهة بالشكر للمتحدثات في الندوة لرغبتهن في مشاركة المساهمات التي يقدمنها للمجتمع القطري، وكيف أنهن يحدثن تغييرا إيجابيا وتحويليا في بيئات مختلفة، لا سيما وأن المرأة تضطلع بدور قيادي داخل الأسرة، وفي أماكن العمل وقطاعات الأعمال والصناعة.

بدورها، أبرزت لولوة المري، خريجة برنامج ماجستير الآداب في دراسات المرأة في المجتمع والتنمية، التي أدارت الندوة والجلسة الحوارية المصاحبة لها، أن سلسلة ندوات شؤون المرأة القطرية تهدف إلى تناول القضايا المعاصرة التي تواجهها في ظل التطور الاجتماعي والاقتصادي المتواصل في الدولة، مبينة أن هذه الندوات توفر لخريجات برنامج ماجستير الآداب في دراسات المرأة في المجتمع والتنمية، الفرصة لمناقشة الموضوعات ذات الصلة مع خبراء متخصصين في مجالاتهم ومعالجة القضايا من زوايا مختلفة.

يذكر أن كلية العلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية في جامعة حمد بن خليفة، دأبت على تنظيم فعاليات تسلط من خلالها الضوء على أنشطتها ومشاريعها البحثية، علما أن المناقشات الصريحة للندوة الثانية قد تحولت إلى توصيات وممارسات مهمة يمكن أن تقلل من الأضرار التي يسببها الوباء على المجتمع، والمرأة على وجه الخصوص .
