Until recently, many countries feared a re-closure due to the Delta variant that appeared last year in India.
But the detection of a new variant in South Africa has prompted many countries to impose travel restrictions, isolating the African country, which has expressed displeasure at “punishing” it rather than thanking it for discovering the new strain known as Omicron.
So what do we know about this new variant and should we worry?
“Omicron puts nations on alert”
The World Health Organization (WHO) has named the new coronavirus variant “Omicron”, which was first detected in South Africa and classified as ‘of concern’.

November 26 – It will take a few weeks to understand its impact and its ability to spread, we recommend that countries adopt a scientific approach at the current stage, and reiterate that we do not recommend travel restrictions.
What are its characteristics?
Some scientists believe that the new strain is the most contagious, out of all the virus variants that have emerged so far.
The new variant “B. 1.1. 529”
● More than 30 mutations to the spike protein.
● Mutated spike protein helps enter the body’s cells.
● The new variant contains 10 mutations in the area associated with cell receptors versus two versions for the Delta variant.
The new variant contains a large number of mutations, which may give it greater spreadability.
This means that vaccines, designed using the original strain, may not be effective, but those conclusions are still uncertain, according to scientists.
Choices
Several Coronavirus vaccine manufacturers have announced plans to counter Omicron and test the extent to which the strain is resistant to vaccines.
BioNTech has indicated that it can produce and ship upgraded copies of its covid vaccine within 100 days, if the Omicron strain is proven to be able to overcome the immunity granted by its current vaccine.
Growing concern about the spread of the new variant has led to:
– Low oil prices.
– The value of stock exchanges declined in various parts of the world.
– Many countries have imposed travel restrictions on countries in South Africa.

حتى وقت قريب، كانت دول كثيرة تخشى إعادة إجراءات الإغلاق بسبب متحور “دلتا” الذي ظهر السنة الماضية في الهند.
لكن رصد متحور جديد من فيروس كورونا في جنوب إفريقيا دفع الكثير من الدول لفرض قيود على السفر ما تسبب في عزل البلد الإفريقي الذي عبر عن استيائه لـ “معاقبته” بدلا من شكره لاكتشافه السلالة الجديدة المعروفة بـ”أوميكرون”.

أطلقت منظمة الصحة العالمية اسم اوميكرون على المتحور الجديد لفيروس كورونا الذي رصد لأول مرة في جنوب أفريقيا وصنفته بالمقلق جداً.

26/ نوفمبر الثاني – الأمر سيستغرق بضعة أسابيع لفهم تأثيره ومدى قدرته على الانتشار ، نوصي الدول باعتماد منهج علمي في المرحلة الراهنة، ونكرر أننا لا ننصح بفرض قيود على السفر.
ما هي خصائصه؟
يعتقد بعض العلماء أن السلالة الجديدة هي الأشد عدوى، من بين كل متحورات الفيروس التي ظهرت حتى الآن.
السلالة الجديدة “بي. 1.1. 529”
- أكثر من 30 طفرة في البروتين الشوكي وحده
- يساعد البروتين الشوكي المتحور على دخول خلايا الجسم.
- يحتوي المحور الجديد على 10 طفرات في المنطقة المرتبطة بمستقبلات الخلايا مقابل نسختين للمتحور دلتا.
المتحور الجديد يحتوي على عدد كبير من الطفرات ، ما قد يمنحه قدرة أكبر على الانتشار.
وهذا يعني أن اللقاحات، التي صممت باستخدام السلالة الأصلية، قد لا تكون فعالة لكن تلك الاستنتاجات لاتزال غير مؤكدة وفق العلماء.
اختيارات
أعلنت عدة شركات منتجة للقاحات كورونا عن خطط لمواجهة “أوميكرون ” و إجراء اختبارات على مدى مقاومة هذه السلالة للقاحات.
أشارت شركة بيونتيك أنها تستطيع إنتاج وشحن نسخ مطورة من لقاحها المضاد للوباء خلال 100 يوم، إذا ثبت أن سلالة ” أوميكرون ” قادرة على التغلب على المناعة التي يمنحها لقاحها الحالي.
أدى القلق المتزايد من انتشار المتحور الجديد إلى:
– انخفاض أسعار النفط.
– تراجع قيمة أسهم البورصة في أنحاء متفرقة من العالم.
– فيما فرضت العديد من الدول قيود سفر على دول في جنوب أفريقيا.
