Qatar National library Uses New Digital Technologies to Preserve The Past

Doha: Qatar National Library (QNL) announced that it will provide library facilities, the resources, equipment and infrastructure with the highest level of digitization of historical and heritage materials, in order to preserve and make them available to researchers and future generations in the State of Qatar and the whole world at the same time.

Digitization is the process that uses scanning machines and OCR software to recognize texts in order to convert heritage materials such as manuscripts, books, photos and paper maps into digital copies that computers can understand and save and then access at any time anywhere in the world.

QNL has digitized more than 10 million pages from the various collections, of which 5 million pages in Arabic from Heritage Collection and about 2.8 million pages from Arabic collections in the New York University Library.

Director of IT Operations and Infrastructure at QNL, Nasser Al Ansari said that QNL’s digitization processes are linked to its comprehensive vision of preserving Islamic history and culture, and technological progress contributes to making this vision a reality.

The library is committed to preserving heritage materials not only in the Gulf region, but in the Arab and Islamic world as well, we have made a progress in establishing a digitizing content in order to spread the rich Arab knowledge, and we will continue to work diligently and sincerely in order to achieve this goal, Al Ansari added.

For his part, Head of Digitization Services at QNL Hany A Elsawy Abdellatif said that the use of optical character recognition technology (OCR) makes documents come to life and allows users to explore every letter of the information stored in them, adding that an accurate system that improves the work, and coordinates the roles and responsibilities of human cadres and machines have been made to reach the maximum quality of the extracted text , and the digitization team in the library has designed a system that achieves an accuracy level of 99% in identifying printed Arabic texts based on shape, quality and size.

الدوحة: أعلنت /مكتبة قطر الوطنية/ عن تزويد مرافق المكتبة بالموارد والتجهيزات والبنية التحتية التي توفر أعلى مستوى من الرقمنة للمواد التاريخية والتراثية، من أجل حفظها وإتاحتها للباحثين والأجيال القادمة في دولة قطر، مع إتاحتها في الوقت نفسه للعالم بأكمله.

ويقصد بالرقمنة تلك العملية التي تستخدم آلات المسح الضوئي وبرمجيات التمييز الضوئي للحروف في التعرف على النصوص من أجل تحويل المواد التراثية كالمخطوطات والكتب والصور والخرائط الورقية إلى نسخ رقمية تفهمها أجهزة الحاسوب وتستطيع تخزينها وتوفير إمكانية الاطلاع عليها في أي وقت ومن أي مكان في العالم.

وقد قامت المكتبة برقمنة ما يزيد عن(10) ملايين صفحة من المجموعات المختلفة منها 5 ملايين صفحة باللغة العربية من المجموعة التراثية بمكتبة قطر الوطنية ونحو 2.8 مليون صفحة من المجموعات العربية في مكتبة جامعة نيويورك.

وقال السيد ناصر الأنصاري، مدير شؤون عمليات تكنولوجيا المعلومات والبنية التحتية في مكتبة قطر الوطنية: “إن عمليات الرقمنة في المكتبة ترتبط برؤيتها الشاملة للحفاظ على التاريخ والثقافة الإسلامية، ويسهم التقدم التكنولوجي في جعل هذه الرؤية واقعا ملموسا”.

وأضاف: “تلتزم المكتبة بحفظ المواد التراثية وصونها ليس فقط في منطقة الخليج بل في العالم العربي والإسلامي أيضا، لقد قطعنا شوطا كبيرا في إنشاء عملية محكمة لرقمنة المحتوى من أجل نشر المعرفة العربية الثرية، وسنستمر في العمل الدؤوب والمخلص من أجل تحقيق هذا الهدف، حيث يتيح لنا توفر أحدث التقنيات في المكتبة تحقيق هذا الطموح”.

من جهته، قال السيد هاني الصاوي عبد اللطيف رئيس قسم خدمات الرقمنة في مكتبة قطر الوطنية والمسؤول عن الإشراف إن “استخدام تكنولوجيا التمييز الضوئي للحروف يجعل الوثائق تنبض بالحياة ويتيح للمستخدمين استكشاف كل حرف من المعلومات المخزنة فيها”.

وأضاف: “لقد أنشأنا نظاما دقيقا يحسن أعمالنا، وينسق أدوار ومسؤوليات الكوادر البشرية والآلات للوصول إلى الجودة القصوى للنص المستخرج، وقد صمم فريق الرقمنة في المكتبة باستخدام كلا من الأدوات واللوغاريتمات نظاما يحقق مستوى دقة بنسبة 99% في التعرف على النصوص العربية المطبوعة بناء على الشكل والجودة والحجم”.
