Manufacturing firm of MDD Tram receives top awards

California tram company, TIG/m, LLC, the innovative engineering and manufacturing firm of Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD) tram, won the ‘Manufacturer of the Year’, ‘Environmental and Sustainability Initiative’, and ‘Highly Commended in the Category of Customer Initiative’ categories at the Global Light Rail Awards (GLRA) 2020.

“Congratulations to TIG/m, LLC for the great achievement. The tram at MDD has been a great added value service to our city, offering an environment-friendly means of transportation within our premises. The award reiterates our right selection of TIG/m, which proved their high capabilities in bringing in this solution,” engineer Ali al-Kuwari, acting CEO, Msheireb Properties, said in a press statement.

Since December 30, 2019, MDD Tram has transported 100,000 passengers within the city, taking visitors around the central hubs from Msheireb Museums station to Al Kahraba Street, Sikkat Al Wadi back to the Heritage Quarter.

The MDD Tram is part of the sustainability practices adopted by Msheireb Properties to secure safe, practical, environment-friendly transportation for families, tourists, visitors and residents. Sustainability is central to MDD, and the adoption of the latest, cutting-edge technology enables conservation of natural resources and quality of design.

At the GLRA, now in its 14th year, and well-known as the industry’s Oscars, the judging panel evaluated submissions in 16 categories. TIG/m president Brad Read accepted the awards on behalf of the company, noting that “this was one of the toughest years yet to choose the winners. It is fantastic to see such expertise as we all look to bring down costs, improve safety and sustainability, and deliver the best possible passenger experience.”

More than 950 entrees were made to the GLRA awards this year and the winning results generate a great deal of interest from the international transit community. The event was organised by Mainspring and supported by industry publication Tramways & Urban Transit. In the ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ category, TIG/m prevailed over two other shortlisted contenders; industry heavyweights, CAF and Stadler Rail.

TIG/m, LLC is an innovative engineering and manufacturing firm supplying self-powered trams, tramway infrastructure, and tram system services to projects in various parts of the world, including North America, South America, and Asia. Their mission to reduce the environmental impacts and costs of urban rail transportation has resulted in technologically groundbreaking street railways systems that operate independent of any need for distributed power infrastructure such as overhead wires.

TIG/m was founded in 2005 by the merger of an engineering firm with a manufacturing company and dedicated all of its efforts to developing a new kind of urban electric rail car that could operate without overhead wire, carrying all of the power for a full day of passenger service aboard each car. Since that time, they have installed systems that do just that in the US, Aruba and Qatar, and now they are weeks away from beginning a large new project in Riverside, California.

منذ ديسمبر 2019، وفرّ ترام مشيرب قلب الدوحة خدمات النقل ل 100.000 راكب في داخل مدينة مشيرب، حيث نقلهم إلى محطات رئيسية من متاحف مشيرب مرورًا بشارع الكهرباء وسكة وادي مشيرب وصولًا إلى الحي التراثي.

يعتبر ترام مشيرب قلب الدوحة جزءًا من ممارسات الاستدامة التي تتبناها مشيرب العقارية لضمان وسيلة نقل آمنة وعملية وصديقة للبيئة لنقل العائلات والسياح والزوار والسكان في داخل المدينة. وتعتبر الاستدامة ركيزة رئيسية من ركائز مشيرب العقارية التي تتبنى أحدث الوسائل التكنولوجية للمحافظة على البيئة والموارد الطبيعية وجودة التصميم.

وتعد الجوائز العالمية للقطارات الخفيفة من الجوائز المرموقة في هذا القطاع، حيث تقوم لجنة تحكيم خاصة بتقييم المشاركين في 16 فئة مختلفة. وفي حفل الجوائز الرابع عشر، تسلم براد ريد رئيس شركة تي أي جي/‏‏م الجوائز بالنيابة عن الشركة وقال «لقد كانت واحدة من السنوات الصعبة لاختيار الفائزين. ومن الرائع أن نشهد هذه المشاركة حيث نسعى جميعًا إلى خفض التكاليف وتحسين مستويات السلامة والاستدامة وتوفير أفضل تجربة ممكنة للسكان».

وشهدت الجوائز مشاركة أكثر من 960 شركة في هذا العام وحظيت بمتابعة واسعة من العاملين في هذا القطاع. ونظم الحفل من قبل «ماينسبريغ» وبدعم من مجلة النقل الحضري والترام. وفي فئة «مصنّع العام» تفوقت شركة تي أي جي/‏‏م على شركتين منافستين هما «كاف» وشركة ستادلر ريل.
