Qatar Biomedical Research Institute Holds Symposium with Harvard Stem Cell Institute

Doha: As part of its Joint Training and Research Collaboration Program with Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI), Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) recently organized a symposium on the use of cell therapies to treat diabetes.

Held online the second annual Research Collaboration Symposium brought together scientists from both institutions to discuss their research activities. These typically fall within the program’s four research projects and reflect its commitment to training Qatari scientists in using stem cells for diabetes research. To this end, additional presentations were made by young scientists engaged in projects with QBRI’s Diabetes Research Center (DRC).

The Research Collaboration Symposium also featured two keynote talks presented by HSCI faculty at Harvard Stem Cell Institute, the first was “Using Stem Cells to Make Islets for Diabetics,” about developing cell therapies for diabetics. This was followed by “Lineage Tracing on Transcriptional Landscapes,” and was about applying new single-cell technologies to understand developmental biology.

Scientific Director of QBRI’s Neurological Disorders Research Center and Chair of QBRI’s Scientific Advisory Committee for this joint program Dr. Lawrence Stanton said “Since founding the Joint Training and Research Collaboration Program in 2018, excellent progress has been made across our projects. In this respect, the symposium was a chance for the broader scientific community at QBRI and HSCI to exchange ideas.”

Co-Director of Research at HSCI Dr. Douglas Melton affirmed the ongoing success of the initiative, saying: “The joint program between HSCI and QBRI has made excellent progress over the first two years and it is poised to make a significant impact on developing cell therapies for diabetics.”

Executive Director, QBRI, Dr. Omar El Agnaf commented after the symposium: “Our ongoing collaboration with HSCI is a central component of QBRI’s diabetes research program. The annual symposium is always an exciting event as it fosters stronger ties between both organizations and stimulates scientific interchange amongst scientists with a shared interest to treat diabetes using stem cell-based approaches.”

الدوحة: عقد معهد قطر لبحوث الطب الحيوي التابع لجامعة حمد بن خليفة، ندوة حول استخدام طرق العلاج بالخلايا الجذعية لعلاج مرض السكري، وذلك في إطار برنامج التعاون البحثي والتدريبي المشترك مع معهد هارفارد للخلايا الجذعية.

وجمعت ندوة التعاون البحثي السنوية الثانية، التي عقدت عبر الإنترنت، بين علماء من كلتا المؤسستين لمناقشة أنشطتهما البحثية، حيث قدم العلماء الشباب المشاركون في مشاريع مع مركز بحوث السكري التابع للمعهد عروضا تعريفية إضافية.

وشهدت الندوة تقديم أعضاء بمعهد هارفارد للخلايا الجذعية محاضرتين رئيسيتين، بعنوان “استخدام الخلايا الجذعية في بناء خلايا الجزر لمرضى السكري” حول تطوير وسائل العلاج الخلوي لمرضى السكري، والثانية بعنوان “تتبع سلالة المشاهد النسخية” حول تطبيق تقنيات الخلية المنفردة الجديدة لفهم علم الأحياء النمائي.

وقال الدكتور لورانس ستانتون، مدير مركز بحوث الاضطرابات العصبية بمعهد قطر لبحوث الطب الحيوي ورئيس اللجنة الاستشارية العلمية في المعهد لهذا البرنامج المشترك، إنه منذ تأسيس برنامج التعاون البحثي والتدريبي المشترك في عام 2018، استطاع الطرفان تحقيق تقدم ممتاز في المشاريع. حيث وفرت الندوة فرصة لتبادل الأفكار أمام أعضاء المجتمع العلمي في المعهدين.

بدوره أكد الدكتور دوجلاس ميلتون، المدير المشارك للأبحاث في مركز هارفارد، على النجاح المتواصل للمبادرة المشتركة بين الجانبين حيث حقق البرنامج المشترك بينهما تقدما ممتازا على مدار العامين الماضيين، ويسعى البرنامج لإحداث تأثير كبير في تطوير علاجات خلوية لمرضى السكري.

وعقب الندوة أوضح الدكتور عمر الأجنف، المدير التنفيذي لمعهد قطر لبحوث الطب الحيوي، أن التعاون المستمر مع معهد هارفارد للخلايا الجذعية يشكل عنصرا أساسيا في برنامج بحوث السكري بمعهد قطر لبحوث الطب الحيوي.. موضحا أن الندوة السنوية تمثل حدثا مشوقا لأنها تعزز الروابط الوطيدة بين المؤسستين وتحفز التبادل العلمي بين العلماء ذوي الاهتمام المشترك لعلاج مرض السكري باستخدام الأساليب القائمة على الخلايا الجذعية.
