HBKU College of Islamic Studies Launches “Genomie” Project

Doha: The College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) has launched Genomie, a virtual public engagement platform for conversations between experts and the public on developments in the field of genomics.

Part of the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF)-funded Genomics, Islamic Ethics and Public Engagement (GIEPE), Genomie will explore how the public awareness of, and engagement with, genomics can be improved. To assist, the project will use webinars, articles and social media to inform the public of current developments concerning genomics and Islamic ethics research. Engagement with both subjects will also be promoted through polls, surveys and focus groups designed specifically to gauge public experiences and concerns. In doing so, Genomie promotes the co-production of research by encouraging the public to identify and shape research priorities and participate in steering groups.

The projects first webinar, Launching Genomie, took place on Sept. 19 and explored the role and importance of public engagement in shaping science.

Regarding the Genomie project, Professor of Islam and Biomedical Ethics at CIS Dr. Mohammad Ghaly, said: “Genomie is extracted from the Arabic equivalent for my genome in English and, as such, reflects our commitment to engaging with the public on the issues of genomics and Islamic ethics. However, what sets this project apart from others is our ambition for the type and extent of engagement. From our webinars to calls for steering group members, and more, were determined to open up participation in Genomie to as many stakeholders as possible. Were confident that this will facilitate a deeper understanding of both genomics and Islamic ethics, and heighten awareness of the research strengths and interests of the academic community in Qatar and beyond.”

الدوحة: أطلقت كلية الدراسات الإسلامية بجامعة حمد بن خليفة منصة /جينومي/ الافتراضية للمشاركة العامة، التي تعزز الحوار بين الخبراء والجمهور حول التطورات في مجال علم الجينوم.

وتستكشف منصة /جينومي/، التي تُعدُ جزءًا من مشروع /علم الجينوم والأخلاق الإسلامية والمشاركة العامة/ الذي يموله الصندوق القطري لرعاية البحث العلمي، كيف يمكن تعزيز وعي الجمهور بعلم الجينوم والمشاركة فيه.

وللمساعدة في تحقيق ذلك الهدف، ينظم المشروع ندوات إلكترونية، ويستخدم المقالات ووسائل التواصل الاجتماعي لإخبار الجماهير بالتطورات الحالية المتعلقة ببحوث علم الجينوم والأخلاق الإسلامية. بالإضافة إلى تعزيز التفاعل من خلال استطلاعات الرأي، والاستبيانات، ومجموعات التركيز المصممة خصيصًا لقياس الخبرات والاهتمامات العامة.

وفي هذا الإطار عقدت كلية الدراسات الإسلامية الندوة الإلكترونية الأولى للمشروع بعنوان /إطلاق منصة جينومي/ في التاسع عشر من سبتمبر الماضي، واستكشفت دور وأهمية المشاركة العامة في صياغة مستقبل العلوم وناقشت العديد من القضايا المتعلقة بكيفية تقديم علم الجينوم إلى عامة الناس، بمشاركة علماء وباحثين متخصصين ومنتسبين إلى المشروع.

وقال الدكتور محمد غالي، أستاذ الأخلاق الطبية في الإسلام بمركز دراسات التشريع الإسلامي والأخلاق التابع لكلية الدراسات الإسلامية بجامعة حمد بن خليفة بهذه المناسبة، “إن مشروع /جينومي/ يعكس التزامنا بإشراك الجماهير في قضايا علم الجينوم والأخلاق الإسلامية.. وما يميز هذا المشروع عن غيره هو طموحنا المتعلق بنوعية المشاركة ومداها. ونحن عازمون على فتح باب المشاركة في المشروع لأكبر عدد ممكن من الأطراف المعنية، ونحرص على ذلك عبر دعوتهم للمشاركة في ندواتنا الإلكترونية، وحثهم على المشاركة في المجموعة التوجيهية للمشروع، وغيرها من الإجراءات الأخرى”.

وأعرب عن ثقته في أن هذا الأمر سيساهم في تعميق الفهم بقضايا علم الجينوم والأخلاق الإسلامية، وزيادة الوعي بنقاط القوة البحثية واهتمامات المجتمع الأكاديمي داخل دولة قطر وخارجها.
