Qatar and Australia .. Strong Relations, Growing Partnerships

Doha: Al-Sharq and Al-Watan newspapers hailed in their editorials Sunday the phone call held on Saturday between HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and HE Senator the Honourable Marise Payne, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Minister for Women of the Commonwealth of Australia, that came to affirm the common desire to discuss common issues between the two friendly countries.

In this regard, the Qatari dailies underlined the joint communique by the Foreign Ministry of Qatar and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia on Hamad International Airport incident which reflects the strength of the bilateral relations between the two countries and their common eagerness to strengthen partnership in various fields. Additionally, it confirms Qatar’s commitment to resolving this issue.

For its part, Al-Sharq said that HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani stated that the incident is considered a violation of Qatar’s laws and values, and that the officials involved have been referred to the Public Prosecution Office, and assured Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs of Qatar’s commitment to the safety and security of all passengers traveling through Hamad International Airport.

The newspaper pointed out that the State of Qatar has taken the necessary legal measures against those responsible for the incident, adding that the Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs expressed her country’s satisfaction with these initial steps taken by the State of Qatar to address the matter and expressed her confidence that the Qatari government will hold the officials involved accountable in a fair, just and proportionate manner.

The paper further underscored the strong bilateral ties between the State of Qatar and the Commonwealth of Australia and this is what the two ministers affirmed during the phone call, noting the desire of the two countries to enhance this partnership in all fields of cooperation.

The Qatari daily highlighted the volume of trade exchange between Qatar and Australia that reached about 4.5 billion Qatari riyals in important areas such as agricultural products, meat, infrastructure, fertilizers, technology and other important vital sectors, adding that the Qatari investments in Australia reflect the strength of relations between the two countries especially in the fields of agriculture, infrastructure and real estate.

In conclusion, Al-Sharq said that march of cooperation and the depth of relations between countries are capable of pushing the cooperation to stronger and deeper stages in a way that serves the interests of the people, affirming Qatar and Australia’s keenness to build stronger relations and activate more cooperation and partnerships that are in the interest of the two friendly countries.

Al-Watan newspaper said in its Sunday editorial that the Joint communique by the Foreign Ministry of Qatar and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia on Hamad International Airport Incident, reflects the strength of the bilateral relations existing between the two countries, their common eagerness to strengthen the partnership in various fields and Qatar’s commitment to resolving this issue, which Doha considers a violation of the laws and values of the State of Qatar.

What happened was a completely isolated act, based on violations of the procedures followed in such cases. A number of specialized work teams are working to review and identify any gaps that may exist in the relevant procedures and protocols at Hamad International Airport and take the necessary measures to address them immediately to ensure that no violations will occur in the future, Al-Watan noted.

Tens of millions of people have traveled through Hamad International Airport. This airport has gained an incomparable reputation for its keenness on safety, security and comfort of all travelers arriving or transiting. It was also ranked second in the list of the best airports in the world from Travel + Leisure travel magazine, which is one of the most important magazines in the field of travel, the newspaper said.

The criteria used to evaluate the best airports around the world include ease of access, security, variety of food and beverages, shopping experience and design.

Hamad International Airport was ranked second in the Top 10 International Airports. Readers who participated in the vote for Hamad International Airport praised the exceptional services of the airport staff, the available facilities, the wide options for shopping, in addition to the distinctive lounges within one comprehensive building, Al-Watan added.

The newspaper concluded its editorial by saying that the confidence that Hamad International Airport gained was due to the procedures followed in it, which are based on considering that the safety and comfort of travelers is a top priority. What happened is a completely isolated matter that does not in any way reflect the laws and values of Qatar and its hospitable nature.

ونوهت الصحيفتان بهذا الصدد بالبيان المشترك الصادر عن وزارة خارجية دولة قطر ووزارة الخارجية والتجارة الأسترالية بشأن حادثة مطار حمد الدولي، والذي يعكس قوة العلاقات الثنائية القائمة بين البلدين من جهة، وحرصهما المشترك على تعزيز الشراكة في شتى المجالات، وهو يؤكد التزام قطر بحل هذه القضية التي تعتبرها الدوحة انتهاكاً لقوانين وقيم دولة قطر، قبل أي شيء آخر.

فمن جهتها قالت صحيفة /الشرق/ في افتتاحيتها: “إن سعادة الشيخ محمد بن عبدالرحمن آل ثاني نائب رئيس مجلس الوزراء وزير الخارجية قد أوضح لنظيرته الأسترالية أن الحادثة تعد انتهاكاً لقوانين وقيم قطر، مشدداً على أنه تمت إحالة المسؤولين المعنيين إلى النيابة العامة، وأن هناك التزاماً بسلامة وأمن جميع المسافرين عبر مطار حمد الدولي”.

ولفتت الصحيفة إلى أن دولة قطر قد اتخذت الإجراءات القانونية اللازمة حيال المسؤولين عن الحادثة، وقد عبرت وزيرة الخارجية الأسترالية عن ارتياح بلادها لهذه الخطوات التي اتخذتها قطر لمعالجة الأمر، كما أعربت عن ثقتها في أن الحكومة القطرية ستحاسب المسؤولين المعنيين بطريقة عادلة ومنصفة.

وذكرت أن العلاقات القطرية الأسترالية تتميز بالقوة والشراكة في مختلف المجالات، وهذا ما أكده الوزيران خلال المكالمة الهاتفية، وذلك بحكم أن هناك رغبة في تعزيز هذه الشراكة بكافة مجالات التعاون.

وأضافت أن حجم التبادل التجاري بين قطر وأستراليا يبرهن على قوة العلاقات، حيث بلغ نحو 4.5 مليار ريال قطري في مجالات مهمة مثل المنتجات الزراعية واللحوم والبنية التحتية والأسمدة والتكنولوجيا وغيرها من القطاعات الحيوية المهمة، كما كانت الاستثمارات القطرية في أستراليا علامة مهمة على قوة العلاقات بين البلدين، خاصة في مجالات الزراعة والبنية التحتية والعقارات، حيث تعد أستراليا مكاناً رائعاً ومهماً للاستثمار في ظل وجود أطر سياسية وقانونية موثوقة ومؤسسات قوية هناك.

وخلصت الصحيفة في الختام إلى القول: “معروف أن العلاقات بين الدول لا تقف عند حادثة فردية عرضية، بل إن مسيرة التعاون وعمق العلاقات بين الدول كفيلة بدفع هذا التعاون إلى مراحل أقوى وأكثر عمقاً وقوة بما يخدم مصالح الشعوب.. وبطبيعة الحال تركز كل من قطر وأستراليا على بناء علاقات أقوى في المستقبل، وهناك اهتمام واسع من الجانبين لتفعيل المزيد من التعاون والشراكات التي تصب في صالح البلدين الصديقين”.

وأوضحت أن ما حدث عمل منعزل تماما، قام على تجاوزات في الإجراءات المتبعة في مثل هذه الحالات، حيث يعكف عدد من فرق العمل المختصة على مراجعة وتحديد أي ثغرات يمكن أن تكون موجودة في الإجراءات والبروتوكولات ذات الصلة في مطار حمد الدولي، واتخاذ الإجراءات اللازمة لمعالجتها بشكل فوري، لضمان عدم وقوع أي تجاوزات في المستقبل.. مشددة على أنها فعلت كل ذلك بشفافية تامة.
